Kitty's Corner

Facebook

, ,

I am sorry for cursing in the title, but I have some news about Facebook: :D

34 percent of the Danish population have placed a profile on Facebook compared to 33 percent in for instance Canada. At the beginning of December, Denmark's number was 30 percent.

According to a survey which helps companies profile themselves on Facebook, the number of Danes on Facebook grew by 268 percent in 2008 alone.

The report says that an unusually large number of Danish middle-aged and senior citizens use Facebook compared with other countries.

Looking at the average age in other popular Facebook countries shows that Denmark is probably the country in the world with the highest average age - and this is one of the factors that has made Denmark the biggest Facebook country in the world, the report says.

I think I'll just stay here on MyOpera. Facebook doesn't really appeal to me.

268% per year? What happened with Danes so they rushed to Facebook. All of the people I know, or almost all, have a Facebook account. I could hear the other eday in bus few young men talked and at the end one of them said: OK, I will go now, see you on Facebook :faint:

Jen 2. February 2009, 05:59

Glad you are staying.

Kitty 2. February 2009, 06:22

@ Darko ~ I know a lot of persons on myspace too, and many of them have invited me there. But you know, I spend my spare time here, and really don't have any extra time to put somewhere else. So, you guys are stuck with me. :D

@ Javaen ~ Thank you.

Carol 2. February 2009, 06:26

Me too.

Kitty 2. February 2009, 06:57

Thanks Carol.

Carol 2. February 2009, 06:58

You are welcome, glad I am staying here and not on those other sites.

r♡se 2. February 2009, 09:14

Cursing in the title

Kitty 2. February 2009, 09:29

Isn't Facebook a curse word?

r♡se 2. February 2009, 09:38

Oh. I thought perhaps you'd removed another F-word.

Kitty 2. February 2009, 09:41

I don't remove F-words, I use them where I find them necessary. :D

Marike 2. February 2009, 14:53

I have a facebook account :o: and in the beginning it was fun finding people I haven't seen for years. But it's sooooo boring now!
Funny story to tell.
I had problems with facebook and opera mini, so I came looking for an answer to my problem here at the opera forums. Lovely Dennis tried to help me, but I discovered it was facebook and not opera that was the problem. Any how so I started to post in the lounge, and so met many wonderful talented people
Here its never boring!

In the end facebook was good for one thing, it brought me here :D

Kitty 2. February 2009, 14:56

A cheer for Facebook for bringing you here then, Marike!

I have never been bored here either. Things seem to evolve all the time.

Angeliki 2. February 2009, 17:31

Keep it happy,
Keep it active,
Keep it on Opera!
Feeling like a small family in the "black hole of the web"
it is not easy,

I believe we did accomplish it here,
with friends,
pets and all! :cat:

Kitty 2. February 2009, 20:31

I agree, it's not easy. It's hard to see friends disappear, and a joy when they sometimes return, even for a short while.

I value my friends here highly!

Angeliki 2. February 2009, 21:00

"I value my friends here highly!"

we feel it every single time we visit,

I mentioned you just now into my response to I_ArtMan (2nd page of my latest post).
We not only feel respected here ,
but you are a unique blogger in many ways and we love it!

Kitty 2. February 2009, 21:03

Oh... :o:

Thank you for the kind words, Angeliki. I will go see what you wrote now.

flamingo-rinse 2. February 2009, 23:40

I think we should, in the spirit of investigation, set up a new social site, called TwitBook - and see how many people actually join :D

glenno 2. February 2009, 23:46

Me, me, i want to join that! How do you do it?
Or how about Farcebook?

Jen 2. February 2009, 23:47

 I'm just getting used to this circle on Opera.

flamingo-rinse 2. February 2009, 23:59

Whoah - check this out!! We should definitely make up a new one....
a)TwitBook
b)FarceBook
c)Fools Reunited (for bottom-of-the-class mates to catch up with each other...)

..there must be more possibilities...:D

theoddbod 3. February 2009, 00:27

WhySpace? Titter?

Suntana 3. February 2009, 00:36

Interesting little story, Marike. As for me? I am here ultimately because Firefox failed to do its job, failed to satisfy me. Despite mainly raves about Firefox by most people I know who use it, on MY computer, Firefox was an annoying, unreliable pile of shit. So, I kicked it to the curb after its 1 or 2 week trial. I very vaguely remembered having seen Opera mentioned in reviews here and there. I tried it and was hooked.

I didn't immediately join the OC though. That came later. It's funny. I've got an AOL friend who periodically sent me links to her MySpace posts. She informed me that I'd have to sign up to MySpace if I wanted to comment. I was like, "WHAT? So, you're trying to tell me I'd basically have to have a Blog? And just exactly WTF am I gonna do with a Blog? What would I put in it? I have nothing to put in there. I don't see it happening anytime in the near future. If I ever suddenly somehow have stuff to put in a Blog, I'll get one." Shortly after that, I suddenly had a Blog. :D

scott cumming 3. February 2009, 00:38

nothing holds a candle to opera. that facebook is so pushy. always blinking and pop-ups for sending people a hug or a cup of coffee. i can do that a lot easier here. :coffee:

i only did it because one of sons invited me.

Suntana 3. February 2009, 00:38

Zaph, after reading that Koobface post in Carol's Blog, it only reinforces my desire to stay right here on the OC.

Kitty 3. February 2009, 10:26

@ Mr. Rinse, Mart & Glenno ~ I am not sure I'd like to join a community called neither Farcebook nor Titter... :left:

@ Javaen ~ I think you should just stay here as well.

@ Artman ~ I have never actually been on Facebook, and no one has been able to come up with a good argument for me to actually sign up there.

@ Sunny ~ It's funny when posts match like this, no?! :D
I didn't really know what I was going to do with a blog to begin with. And the first period of time I had all my posts private, but that became pretty boring in the long run. Now I have lots of fun here!

Jen 3. February 2009, 10:28

*gets comfy*

*stretches*

:D

Kitty 3. February 2009, 10:34

We have cookies!

Marike 3. February 2009, 11:16

@ Carlos is amazing how everybody ended up on opera... this is the place to be

@ Zap you are not missing out on facebook its a shitty boring place, I saw all my old friends and then that was that

Kitty 3. February 2009, 11:55

Marike ~ I have a friend who signed up there, but after 2 weeks she didn't really know what to do there, so that sounds pretty much like the experience you had.

r♡se 3. February 2009, 12:03

I'm using the place to share pictures with my old friends who I still keep in touch with even though we're scattered all around the world. Perfect for when somebody doesn't know how to unzip files, or their mailprogram denies receiving any kind of attachment

The apps and stuff, I stay away from, though.

Kitty 3. February 2009, 12:09

That sounds pretty smart - but you have to be a member to look at people's photos, right? Or can you limit the pics, so you choose who can watch them?

r♡se 3. February 2009, 12:12

You can choose exactly who you want to see them. Either public to the world, or specific friends only. The privacy has gotten a lot better there lately, although it's still insane that Facebook claims ownership to everything published on there.

Kitty 3. February 2009, 12:33

I agree with you on the last part, that is ridiculous.
I would love to have that option on posts here on MyOpera also, so you could chose to make a friends only post, and specify which friends were allowed to see it.

r♡se 3. February 2009, 12:38

It would be cool, but I think that would make me paranoid, thinking you'd all hide posts from me! :insane:

Kitty 3. February 2009, 12:44

Believe me, you were one of the last persons I would hide a post from.

r♡se 3. February 2009, 12:56

Melting time - again?!

Moesring 3. February 2009, 13:06

Such appalling language from the kitty. :o:
:washes the kitty's mouth out with soap and water:

I've never been on Facebook. From what I've seen of it from looking at everyone else's screen when we're supposed to be working, it is really boring. I think Rosie's PensionBook picture looks more interesting.

I like the idea of FarceBook.

Facebook claiming ownership is a fairly standard clause of terms and conditions these days. Everyone knows that Google Chrome had one as well. Even My Opera has a clause like that - except they don't claim ownership but you give an irrevocable licence to use anything you upload in any way they see fit. :faint:

I think most people would like to be able to choose which friends can view a post. Personally, I've been asking for it since 12 December 2007. P:

Marike 3. February 2009, 13:23

i agree, we should have a bit more privacy here @ opera, and to add friends there you have to send a request you cant just add them to your friend list. They also have levels of security that you can set-up as you wish.

Kitty 3. February 2009, 14:49

*Spits* Eeeeeeew Moe, that's not fair. I did say I was sorry!

About the ownership to material uploaded, I believe that facebook keeps the stuff even after it is deleted by yourself. That's really suspicious, and I do not like that at all!

Are they working on it, Moe, or is it an unanswered request?

@ Rose ~ Yes, it feels nice, don't you think? flirt

@ Marike ~ I do agree. The only positive thing about the friendship system here is that if you don't add people back, they can't see your friends only posts.

Moesring 3. February 2009, 14:52

As far as I know, it was never seen to begin with so I would assume it is unanswered. awww

Kitty 3. February 2009, 14:53

Argh! You raised it in a forum, right?

Jen 3. February 2009, 14:59

*Shows up with a glass of milk and a saucer of milk for Kitty.*

I'm ready for my cookies!! :D

Kitty 3. February 2009, 15:00

I hope you left your samurai sword at home!

*Gets peanutcookies out of the big jar*

Now.... this is good!

Jen 3. February 2009, 15:07

 U rival me with your quickness. :D

Kitty 3. February 2009, 15:09

You want to join a cookie race?

Suntana 3. February 2009, 17:29

Maybe I'm missing something. Why ... due to what aspect specifically would Facebook get boring after a while? I mean, from what I'm reading, I would assume you can put up Posts of whatever there on Facebook just like here on the OC, right? I take it you can post stories, poetry, Art, jokes, VidClips and whatever else we post here. And they have Comment Boxes and Friends Lists, right? So what exactly is it that quickly makes one hit a WALL over on Facebook and after a month or however long, go, "Well, I've said everything I had to say. :sing: I've lost ... that lovin' feeling ..." Is there perhaps over there an unwritten rule / format that it's really only for connecting with people you already know or used to know? Is it NOT common to connect with people you don't know?

Darko 3. February 2009, 18:30

The worse thing in facebook is that people are not communicating more than we do here in Opera. They mostly watch photos and play games, competing with their friends.
I like to be here much more. Even though some of my relatives put a pressure on me to open Facebook account :knight:

Kitty 3. February 2009, 19:50

@ Sunny ~ Someone who has been there will have to answer that. But you know, lots of persons get tired of MyOpera too, and just disappear; we've seen that already amongst our friends here.

@ Darko ~ I am glad you like it here more.

Suntana 3. February 2009, 20:33

Oh, Okay, Darko. That makes sense. That would do it. I guess the problem they have over at Facebook is that which coined the legendary phrase in the movie Cool Hand Luke --- "What we have here ... is a failure to communicate."

That's true, Zaph. People leave MyOpera as well. One of my friends abruptly left recently. There was no hint, no warning. I just suddenly noticed her Main Pic in my Friends List and Visitors area was now the generic default grey camera Pic. I went to check her Blog. I could only get to her Info Page. I PM-ed her to see what was up. I got no reply. A day or two later, I could access her Blog, but POOF! It was wiped out. All Posts were gone. Everything that could be deleted, was. I had gotten Henry from OWC to also PM her. She did reply to him, but was very vague and gave no clues as to what made her disappear overnight. She just made it clear that she just wanted MyOpera to be a funny dream in her past. :yikes: :::Shrug:::

Jen 3. February 2009, 20:39

Aw. Sorry Carlos.

Because its so easy to share your moods, opinions, happinesses, and disappointments, its easy to have a stronger connection to people here than someone in your own area. Losing that is hard and has happened to me too.

For what its worth, I would not abandon what I have here without a word to anyone. Promise. :D
