Men who hate women ~ Mænd der hader kvinder

,

There are some films, that are bound to sell a lot of tickets: Batman and Bond-films for instance.

"Men who hate women" is certainly one of them. The film is based on a book by Stieg Larsson, a Swedish novelist who managed to write three books and a draft to a fourth before he died of a massive heart attack, only 50 years old. He died just before the first book in the series was published. Tough luck, eh?

Anyway, these books were really a big thing here. They are published in English now - and if you like a good crime novel, you should read them. They are really exciting.

The film is about Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist, who is hired to find out what happened to a girl that disappeared almost 40 years ago. He is getting help from a 24 year old hacker girl; she is pierced, tattooed and has a very violent background. She is mentally ill and has been declared incapable of managing her own affairs. She has photographic memory and is a true genius when it comes to finding peoples secrets. When she meets bastards she is a true predator, she doesn't take shit from nobody!

I was very curious if the film could live up to the book. After all, it must be pretty difficult to boil 550 pages down to 2½ hours of movie.

All in all it was like I expected. I believe you can appreciate this film without having read the book. It's a damn good story, and the actors played well, even though the persons don't look at all like I expected them to.

:star::star::star::star::star: out of 6.

Which cinema did you go to? Must have been a sneak premiere...

I love Larsson, and I'm looking forward to see the film. When I read 'Mænd der hader..' I thought 'This will become a movie one day.' And so it did, and according to the trailers I've seen, they picked some interesting actors. My wife and I are going next friday when it has premiere in Megascobe, Horsens.

5 out of 6? It is almost perfect then  I am not sure I have heard about Stieg Larsson and probably his books were not published here but there is always Internet :D

Jen 19. February 2009, 06:06

*lafs* I hate that when they look different than in my head. Throws me off a bit.

Dammit, they were PERFECT in my head! :irked:

Kitty 19. February 2009, 06:49

@ Aqualion ~ It was indeed a preview of the movie, I know that many Copenhagen cinemas have shown it for a "special" audience.
Have you read his other two books as well?
I read the "Mænd der hader kvinder" once more before seeing the film, because the first time I read it, it went pretty fast at the end because it was so exciting. :D

@ Darko ~ Almost perfect yes, and I think it might have had 6 :star: if I hadn't read the book, but I am not sure. It's a very good thriller!

@ Jen ~ And they always do, don't they? It's like when you talk with someone over the phone before actually seeing them. They never look like you expect! :left:

Martin K 19. February 2009, 06:59

Yes, I read the other books. In fact Larsson had ten Blomkvist/Salander books in mind when he started the process, but only got to write three of them. There are still unanswered questions. Tough luck, ideed. The second one is about 'trafficking' and the third is... Well, go read them. They are just as good as the first. And the main topic is still violence against women and corporate crime.

Jen 19. February 2009, 07:11

I know. I get women wrong all the time in my company -with the visual in my head from the phone. Then you meet and all you can think is, "Damn, she has short blonde hair!? WOAH!".

Kitty 19. February 2009, 07:14

@ Aqualion ~ I have already read the other two books, and I liked them as well. I am very curious about whether there will be a fourth book out of the draft he made before he died. If there will be, then I will surely read that one as well.

@ Jen ~ Exactly, that is so weird that we actually make a picture of what people might look like, even without thinking about it. And I have always "guessed" wrong! :left:

I'm thinking, maybe some other Scandinavian crime writer should pick up where Larsson left and finish the main storyline. Would be nice with some kind of closure. I don't think I'm the only reader who thinks so.

theoddbod 19. February 2009, 08:24

Sounds pretty

r♡se 19. February 2009, 09:25

I am definitely going to watch this one! I remember thinking that it would make a good movie when I read the book. :D
I heard that all three movies will be ready for DVD this year. That's pretty fast...
:eyes: It's 2½ hours long?

Kitty 19. February 2009, 09:27

@ Aqualion ~ I think it would be hard to pick it up after Larsson. It could never be quite the same as the first books. Having said that, I would love to read more about the Blomkvist/Salander couple!

@ Mart ~ And it was!

Kitty 19. February 2009, 09:28

@ Rose ~ Yes, 2½ hours - and they friggin' charged for an all-nighter! :irked:
Well ok, it was cool to see it before it really hits the cinemas!
Should all three of them be ready in 2009? Wow! :eyes:

Kiran 19. February 2009, 09:40

:DSo,kvinder=women/woman?

Kitty 19. February 2009, 09:42

Kvinder = women , that's true. Increasing your vocabulary? :D

Sounds like an interesting film!

Kitty 19. February 2009, 09:44

It was. I like films where crimes are solved.

r♡se 19. February 2009, 09:52

I bet it will be like all Swedish crime series - the first movie goes to the cinema and the others are straight to DVD... p:

Kitty 19. February 2009, 09:55

I will be a tad disappointed if that happens to this trilogy as well. I can't remember when a book caused this much fuss. They say that the Larsson books made people read who don't read regularly, and there was a regular war on the prices on the books, when the supermarkets decide to dump the prices and give the booksellershops war!

Kimmie 19. February 2009, 09:57

Sounds cool. I'd like to see the movie before I read the books, though, cause the books are always better.

Kitty 19. February 2009, 10:04

I like that too, Kimmie, even though I rarely do things in that order. There was one exception for me, and that was the Kite Runner. I saw the film first, and I loved it. Then I read the book, and I didn't like it at all. I thought it was really poorly written. Weird.

Kimmie 19. February 2009, 10:41

I've not seen it or read the book.. I guess it's bound to happen, a shit book being made into a good film... Just really rare :left:

The Dark Furie 19. February 2009, 11:00

Looks like Kim and I in my dream home. :eyes:

Kiran 19. February 2009, 11:15

Yeah.:D
How is kvinder pronounced? Is the r a post alveolar frictionless continuent or a tap or trill? Is the the k silent?

Kitty 19. February 2009, 11:47

@ Mik ~ Well... He is more than 20 years older than her, so that fits perfectly!

@ Kiran ~ The k is not silent, but the d is. The r... hmmm... we don't roll on it, if you understand what I mean.

Cois 19. February 2009, 12:24

Sounds interesting :sherlock:

The Dark Furie 19. February 2009, 15:41

Hey, I'm not that old. awww

Kitty 19. February 2009, 15:42

It was you who said it

Kiran 22. February 2009, 07:04

 The r is not rrrrrolled.Got it,kviner.

Gavin Sheedy 23. April 2009, 04:13

S.V.T. have already said that the rest will not get cinema releases, in Sweden at any rate. I thought that book and the film were different animals.Nice to hear a different point of view.

Kitty 23. April 2009, 04:21

I heard recently that they will put the two others in the cinema here - well, I think I'm going to see them as well.
