Pancake Day

, ,

In some countries there is a much-loved tradition of making and eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, which falls between February 2 and March 9 each year, depending on the date for Easter. In 2009, Shrove Tuesday falls on 24 February: Today. Shrove Tuesday ('shrove' stems from old English word 'shrive', meaning 'confess all sins') is the day before Lent.

Shrove Tuesday was cleverly invented to use up the ingredients that were given up for Lent - milk, butter and, particularly, eggs - which may not be eaten again until Easter.

In other parts of the world, Shrove Tuesday is marked by quite different celebrations. In New Orleans, for example, it's celebrated with the Mardi Gras, and in Rio de Janeiro with the equally raucous carnival.

I would have made pancakes today, but since Tuesday is training day, I don't really feel like eating pancakes, plus I don't have time to make them. So I'll save the pancake-baking until the weekend!

Yay, Shrove Tuesday! Even though I love pancakes, I'll see if I can find fastelavensboller on my way home from work out later instead :D.
And no, I won't shrive anything p:.

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 12:16

I'll lend you an ear if you feel the need for it later! :D

I will have a piece of cake instead of pancakes and fastelavnsboller, when I get home.

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 12:39

Mmmm, I like honey on my pancakes, Angeliki. :yummy:

Here I usually have them with jam and sugar; and in special occasions: Ice cream. Mmmmmm... *Drooling a little bit*

robertj 24. February 2009, 12:40

I love that image. It always make me smile.

*grins*

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 12:42

Hi Robert!
Me too - I found one with a cat with a pancake on its head too, but that was unfortunately to blurry. :D

rose-marie 24. February 2009, 12:46

Pancakes are best served with chocolate/sugar or jam
*leers over at the salad bowl* awww

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 12:57

I still miss to taste them with chocolate. Will Nutella do? I loooove Nutella. :yummy:
*Looks at the salad* No thanks. *shakes head*

rose-marie 24. February 2009, 13:16

I'm not crazy about Nutella, but if you like it, it will probably do .

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 13:18

What do you use then? Do you make the chocolate sauce yourself?

robertj 24. February 2009, 13:23

Hai thar Zaphira! I have posted here quite some times before, but on my other account. ;-)

And cat:

Not as good as that bunny though

rose-marie 24. February 2009, 13:28

Yes I do, Zap. Finally something I can treat you to :hat:

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 14:20

@ Robert ~ You have? :eyes: Under what name?
You're right, it's not as good as the bunny, but the expression on that cat's face is priceless!

@ Rose ~ Now you definitely made me drool! All over my keyboard! awww

robertj 24. February 2009, 14:28

Zaphira, I don't want to "announce" it to the public, as I fear I will get plenty of support requests there too. :-) If you want to do educated guesses, feel free to send me a PM ;-)

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 14:29

I am not sure I can live up to "educated guesses", but ok, I'll give it a shot!

Spaggyj 24. February 2009, 14:32

I like pancakes. But only plain with maple syrup, or blueberry with ice cream :D . I'm not celebrating though - I don't like doing something just because I'm told to

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 14:35

I understand that, Kimmie, but I hardly ever get pancakes, so I thought this was a nice opportunity.
Are the pancakes you like thin or thick? What is common there? Ours are usually thin.

rose-marie 24. February 2009, 14:58

Pancakes must be thin!
Heh - I never knew I had so many opinions about pancakes p:.

I have another request for you, Robert. It involves MOTW... :D

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 15:02

I like pancakes thin too, but I eat the American thick ones as well. :D
And Rose, you've already been MOTW!

rose-marie 24. February 2009, 15:02

Not me, silly!

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 15:04

Oh...
If Mik makes it MOTW I will officially rename it to TOTW! :D

wickedlizard 24. February 2009, 15:06

In Portugal, today marks the last day of Carnival. Tomorrow is traditionally Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Carnival comes from the word Carne meaning meat. Meat in all senses of the word. Meat as in human flesh and the pleasures derived of it and also meat, the type people eat. Carnival's last day is traditionally the last day one eats meat. After that starts Lent, in christianity, it meant 40 days of fasting. But in actuality it much older than that, the middle east do Ramadam, they too go through a fasting time. The tradition goes a lot further back in time, in the winter time, when people were once stuck eating meat during the winter time, because to survive, they ate what could be hunted and what could be stored during the winter months. Fasting is a time when people basically de-toxified their bodies, eating what the spring months provide.

Spaggyj 24. February 2009, 15:25

They're traditionally large and thin here. But I like them very small and quite thick.

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 15:30

I suddenly get a strong urge to point out that it's still pancakes we are talking about. Just in case.

wickedlizard 24. February 2009, 15:39

Here we eat these delicious doughnut-like pastries today. I will post the recipe later on, going to translate the recipe into english.

qlue 24. February 2009, 16:01

Pancakes are made from milk, flour and eggs. Not much to the recipe really and it very forgiving so minor errors won't make much difference. Thick pancakes are usually referred to as flapjacks here and in some places, the thin ones go by the french name of crêpes. In England (and South Africa) the word 'pancake' usually refers to the thin ones but small thick sweetened ones called 'drop scones' or crumpets are popularly served with tea. (sometimes with a dollop of jam and/or cream on top). Thin pancakes are best served, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar in my opinion.

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 16:09

@ Issy ~ I'll be looking forward to the recipe, and perhaps a photo of them!

@ Aadil ~ We call the thin ones pandekager (pancakes) and the thick ones for American pancakes. I make both sorts, but as I wrote, not very often. I know some people ad various fruits to the batter, for instance blueberries. I've never tasted it, but it looks very delicious.

Javaen 24. February 2009, 16:44

My best friend fiends for pancakes bathed in butter and copious amounts of powdered sugar.

Have a happy Pancake weekend. :D

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 16:45

Thanks Jen, I will. :hat:

gdare 24. February 2009, 18:21

In Serbia they are usually thin and mostly filled with plum or apricot jam or chocolate or sugar with nuts. The most delicious ones I have ever tried were iwth plum jam cooked with chocolate. I didn`t even know it was possible.
Once I made 30 pancakes, filled them with jam and put in stove with some sweet cream over them. I ate 20 :eyes:

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 19:07

Oh man... how badly did your tummy hurt after that??? :faint:

rose-marie 24. February 2009, 19:34

Oh dear!

dbshadow 24. February 2009, 19:51

I'm going home and have thin ones rolled with honey and peanut butter in them, didn't really think about why we always eat pancakes on "fat Tuesday" or for that matter why we eat pickled herring on new years.

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 20:04

Mmmm, peanut butter, that sounds really nice. So many options I've never thought about!
I can do without the pickled herring though! :left:

gdare 24. February 2009, 20:13

I felt as I would explode. After 3 hours I ate the rest of them :left:
Now I feel as weirdo :eyes:

Zaphira 24. February 2009, 20:14

You ate 30 pancakes in one day?! Man!!! :ko:

I don't know how many I could eat, but certainly not 30!

rose-marie 24. February 2009, 20:22

Wow! :eyes: What did you do during those three hours? Gasp for air? :faint:

gdare 24. February 2009, 20:23

I was much younger. Now I can only have 3 or 4 awww

Suntana 24. February 2009, 21:20

No No, Rose! Pancakes must NOT be thin. Pancakes must be somewhere between 1 to 1 and a half centimeter in thickness. After all, the word "cake" is in pancakes and cakes are thick. :D I recently commented in someone else's Blog on a Pancake Post. I believe she was from Sweden and her friend there was from India. I was shocked to find out that over there the normal pancake was thin. :frown: But, I then extracted a positive out of that. Here I normally eat 4 to 5 thick pancakes. The way those 2 women described their normal pancakes over there, it seemed like 3 of their thin pancakes over there equalled 1 of my thick pancakes here. So, the upside would be that by eating those extremely thin pancakes, I could say I ate 12 to 15 pancakes! Those thin pancakes, I know them here as crepes as qlue pointed out.

BTW, Zaph, actually Darko didn't say he ate 30 pancakes. He said he made 30 pancakes ... but, ate ONLY 20. :yikes: Well, if they were thin pancakes ... Nnnngg, well, it's still a LOT of pancake MASS :insane: but not as mind-boggling and belly-bursting as 20 thick pancakes.

Suntana 24. February 2009, 21:25

That cat with the pancake on its head has the expression of, "C'mon! I DARE you to attempt to knock this pancake off my head. The question you have to ask yourself is - 'Do I feel lucky?' Well DO you, Punk!?" He even seems to be squinting like Clint Eastwood.

theoddbod 24. February 2009, 21:42

Pancakes must be very thin, maybe 3mm at absolute most p:.

Mine were covered in sugar and lemon juice earlier :D

wickedlizard 24. February 2009, 21:50

I just finished translating that recipe. Started it then we went hill climbing, as we seem to have at least a week of sunny weather coming! :hat: Took a few photos until my battery died. Then we ourselves had a pancake tuesday. Recharged a battery a bit for the pancake photos. Yummy! I had no idea the english did pancake tuesday too! :left: I mentioned it to hubby and he said, yeah, we do! So we did it here this year! :D

:right: My doggy Dylan has 3 pancakes himself. He loved them! p:

Suntana 24. February 2009, 22:52

Whoa! Pancakes with sugar and Lemon Juice! :eyes:
The lemon juice is not computing.

Three mm? Yikes! I practically can't see that on my Ruler. But, that's what those women at that other Blog also said, that around 3mm was the norm for them. ::: Shrug ::: But, Ehhh, as long as they're delicious, I'd just have to stack more of 'em.

theoddbod 24. February 2009, 22:57

It's a great mixture on a pancake :D

wickedlizard 24. February 2009, 22:59

:left: that's a rabbit with pancakes on it's head, Suntana. :left:

Pancakes with sugar and lemon juice is REAL good. How about a bit of sugar cinnamon and rum or Cointreau. Drool... p:

Suntana 25. February 2009, 01:14

Issy, I was referring to the Cat with a Pancake on its head that's in robertj's comment. :D I do have to admit though that when I first saw the rabbit in Zaph's Post, I wondered if it was a hamster.

Zaphira 25. February 2009, 05:03

@ Sunny ~ One and a half cm? :yikes: That is one heavy pancake.
And Darko did indeed say he ate 30 pancakes. First 20, and after three hours the rest of them. Check yourself
Anyway, I know some people here actually make "pancake cakes", like, stacking them up and make it look like a real cake. Here:

:D

@ Mart ~ Lemon juice - that was new too. Is there sugar in it, or do you just squish the lemon over the pancake?

@ Issy ~ You must make very good pancakes, when even the dog likes them. I remember when I was a kid, my cousin and me baked a swiss roll. We didn't like it, so we gave it to her dog. He didn't like it either.

Suntana 25. February 2009, 05:52

Okay, I see it now, Zaph. Yep, Darko did apparently eat 30 pancakes.
What I'm seeing in that last Pic is that the pancakes are about as thin as Deli slices of Cold Cuts.

Dacotah 25. February 2009, 06:38

Good post Zaphira.

Zaphira 25. February 2009, 06:45

@ Sunny ~ Yes, they are thin. That way you can taste the topping much better. Imagine it... swimming in syrup and jam... :yummy: *drools a bit*

@ Carol ~ Thanks!

Dacotah 25. February 2009, 06:47

You are welcome Zaphira. :D
