Daylight savings time

, ,

Last night we lost an hour when we set our clocks one hour forward due to the phenomenon Daylight saving time.

I never liked setting clocks neither back nor forward. It takes my inner clock some time to adjust, and especially here in March where we loose an hour.

Anyway - I've been browsing around to find the effects of this, and it seems that the answer you get depends on where you look. Some say we save energy, some say we don't.

So I have set my clock like I'm supposed to. But I'm not liking it.

We had ours March 8th.
I know what you mean.

gdare 29. March 2009, 06:03

I forgot to change it when I went to bed and woke up satisfied I have a long day in front of me. Then I realised it is 7:30 instead of 6:30 :irked:
It will be obvious when a sun goes down this afternoon. It will be dark sooner than we expect :left:

Zaphira 29. March 2009, 07:05

@ Carol ~ It's so weird that it's not happening at the same time around the world. :left:

@ Darko ~ This year I remembered to set my watches before going to bed, and that's a good thing. And I still woke up pretty early. Let's see how long it'll take me to adjust this time. :irked:

flamingo-rinse 29. March 2009, 08:04

My daylight saving doesn't end until April 5th, and then I get an extra hour <thankyouthankyouthankyou> but, like you Pussy Cat, it'll most likely mean that I'm going to be waking up at 4.30 or 5 pm when the alarm won't go off until six Homer: Doh!

Zaphira 29. March 2009, 11:07

I just hope that I will adjust quickly this year - the changing back is usually easier for me: Getting an extra hour is better than loosing one. :D

pintavodki 29. March 2009, 11:47

 Funny picture. :D

What about daylight savings time, we also had this thing last night. But they are clever to make it before sunday, so people have enough time to sleep. As for me, I don't have troubles with it.

rose-marie 29. March 2009, 12:08

I'm feeling a little jet-lagged today... p:

I don't know about saving energy, but I heard it's so that we'll have daylight longer in the afternoon instead of the morning. I'm ok with that :D.

Zaphira 29. March 2009, 12:20

@ Merlin ~ I just have to remember not to make appointments on the day after we set the clocks. There are always some who forget to set their clocks and show up either an hour later or an hour earlier. Myself included. :D

@ Rose ~ Right now I feel ok, but I might be tired tonight. Or maybe fully awake, I don't know.
I like my mornings. Always have, always will.

pintavodki 29. March 2009, 12:27

Indeed. When I went to school I always dreamed that the teachers would forget about setting the clock back in autumn and come to the classes an hour later. :D But this never happened.. :frown:

Dacotah 29. March 2009, 12:48

"On August 8, 2005, President Bush signed the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which included the changes in Daylight Saving Time described above, effective in 2007. Prior to 2007, DST began at 2:00 a.m. (local time) on the first Sunday in April, and ended at 2:00 a.m. (local time) on the last Sunday in October. The new rules for DST beginning in 2007 mean an extra four or five weeks of DST each year. There will now be a total of 238 days of DST, compared to a total of 210 days of DST in 2006 under the previous rules, and the U. S. will remain on DST for about 65% of the year."
http://tf.nist.gov/general/history.htm

"Daylight saving time did indeed begin in the United States during World War I, primarily to save fuel by reducing the need to use artificial lighting. Although some states and communities observed daylight saving time between the wars, it was not observed nationally again until World War II.

Of course, World War II is long over. So why do we still observe daylight saving time?"

All the way at the bottom they now have a box: Listen to this article.

jekav 29. March 2009, 13:12

It get dark later, not sooner. When sun set at 6 o'clock yesterday, it will now at 7.

I also don't understand this thing of time shifting, it makes things so bloody difficult. Why don't we just get up a little earlier in summer when we want to save energy and enjoy longer light in the evening?

I once played around with showing local times on a website, and also included DST. There are quite some different moments people in the world shift their clock, and then of course they all shift it at their own local time (often between 2 and 3, but local time, so on a different moment on every timezone). It's a killer to get schedules right, like flight plans etc. And there is no real winning in it in my view.

Marike79 29. March 2009, 13:14

We don't have that here in South Africa :D but I know what it was like, cause I used to live in England and I can say it did have an effect on me... :frown:

pintavodki 29. March 2009, 13:29

jekav, nice that you've written it. I've also thought that it would get darker later, but then I got confused by gdare's comment and was too lazy tt think about it (probably i'm tired because of the DST  Ha-ha, no, just kidding :D )

canadagirl 29. March 2009, 14:27

There is six hours time difference between Canada and Serbia, and we switch to daylight saving time March 8th but my mother in Serbia did not have to do that until last night, so in the meantime we had 5 hours difference in time instead of 6. We could talk longer, kind of like that!!!!!!!

Javaen 29. March 2009, 17:50

I liked the grim reaper! I hate losing an hour too... But I guess I adjust okay. It is nice to get more sun in the evening where my daughter and I can enjoy it.

ellinidata 29. March 2009, 19:58

where the lost hour goes anyway ? :D

Zaphira 29. March 2009, 20:04

@ Merlin ~ That's just typical! :D

@ Carol ~ Thanks for the links. I went through some Danish links as well, before writing the post.

@ Jurjen ~ Interesting points of views on the flight plans, I didn't even think of that. I know that we have some kind of society here, trying to abolish the phenomenon!

@ Marike ~ You're are one lucky kitteh!

@ Canadagirl ~ That's nice to hear that there are some positive effects of the DST!

@ Jen ~ I thought the grim reaper fitted this post just nicely, telling that it's not just me who have problems with adjusting the clocks.

@ Angeliki ~ Hmmm... that's a good question indeed! Perhaps the same place as all the single socks that disappear from the washing machine?

Dacotah 29. March 2009, 22:33

You are welcome Zaphira.

Spaggyj 30. March 2009, 08:00

It's good that the clocks go forward on Sundays, really. Gives you a chance to get up late without messing up your weekday routine immediately p:

Furie 30. March 2009, 09:16

I want my hour back! I know the whole thing was invented for farmers but I'm not a damn farmer. Gimme my hour back!

Zaphira 30. March 2009, 13:45

@ Kimmie ~ Good point. I remember one year, I had a colleague who managed to get through Sunday without realizing that he had forgotten to set his clock, which meant he was an hour late for work on Monday! :D

@ Mik ~ Isn't there a troll union or something, that will take your complaint!?

jonpar 30. March 2009, 15:12

...so you must be sleepy these days...:sst: i like when you're sleepy p:

Spaggyj 30. March 2009, 15:17

That happened to a lot of people I know :D . It's irritating, but I think one of the big reasons nowadays is for school. It's not good for kids to walk to and from school in the dark.

jonpar 30. March 2009, 16:07

not at all, everybody saves money waking up earlier

Furie 30. March 2009, 17:39

Try not to use that word anymore please kitty. There's a few people on here using it against me under the guise of joining in the joke and I've had enough of it.

Zaphira 30. March 2009, 17:53

Oh, ok. I will stop. Sorry.

Spaggyj 30. March 2009, 17:54

People aren't waking up earlier. They're waking up later.. Because the clocks went forward, not back.

Furie 30. March 2009, 18:02

Not your fault kitten, no need to apologise. Just a few people have been taking liberties and I'm stamping out the opportunity.

Zaphira 30. March 2009, 18:05

I understand that completely. So... can I call you Big T instead? :left:

jonpar 30. March 2009, 18:09

Spaggyj what you say is like instead of loosing 100$ you have won 100$....then Spaggyj, BUY something of your extra money, please
:eyes:

Spaggyj 30. March 2009, 18:23

Jonpar. Okay, we obviously had a problem with the language barrier. Never mind. . I was talking to Zaphira, anyway, you know  .

Furie 30. March 2009, 18:23

I'm so not a rap star. I'm a rock star. :headbang: You can have a choice between Mik Sabbath, REO Furiewagon, Furtallica or Mikyard Furnard. p:

gdare 30. March 2009, 18:27

Mikyard Furnard and his new hit "Sweet Home Fury-yama"

wickedlizard 30. March 2009, 19:41

    :faint:

Javaen 30. March 2009, 20:23

Furtallica! REO Furiewagon...! P:.

Hehe.

Furie 30. March 2009, 21:47

Personally I'm leaning towards Blue Furie Cult.

Javaen 31. March 2009, 01:45

 sort of appropriate... Where does the "blue" part fit tho... :sherlock:

AnitaMargita 1. April 2009, 14:16

I know what you mean Zaphira. I don't like this changing too. Although i like changing on winter time when we "get" an hour extra.

flamingo-rinse 1. April 2009, 21:38

I get my extra hour starting this coming weekend :D

The JiMik Furix Experience?

Twisted Mikster?

Zaphira 2. April 2009, 04:11

I like that - Twisted Mikster. But AeroMik is also pretty high up the list.

- I hadn't even giving it a thought that people who live on the other side of the globe do it the other way round. Homer: Doh! @ myself.

flamingo-rinse 2. April 2009, 06:29

 Yup. We do. The hardest thing about moving to the opposite side of the planet, I think - overall - has been adjusting to the seasons being totally opposite. It's definitely a tough thing for the system to get used to.

Van Furlen?

The Stone Temple Furies?

Guns 'n Furie?

Mikvana?

Zaphira 2. April 2009, 06:32

I can't even imagine how weird it must be to have winter in the summer and vice versa. That instead of having birthday at spring, I would have it in autumn. I would not like that. awww

Guns 'n Furie is good.

Then he could change it when in a good mood to Miks 'n Roses.

flamingo-rinse 2. April 2009, 06:45

The advantage is I suppose that you actually have to travel to the Snow, instead of it arriving overnight on your doorstep. Where I live, it last snowed in 1930 (and they still talk about it  )

Red Hot Furie Peppers?

Earth, Wind and Furie? (well, no - but it works, I tell you)

OK, Furan Furan. Had to do it, sorry.

Zaphira 2. April 2009, 06:48

So, did Mika actually steal his name from Mik? :eyes:

flamingo-rinse 2. April 2009, 07:02

Yes, in a word :D

ElecMik Light Orchestra? OMG. Sorry.

Furie Goes To Hollywood.

OK, finished, I promise.

flamingo-rinse 2. April 2009, 07:03

The Furie Boy Three.

flamingo-rinse 2. April 2009, 07:06

Mik and the Mechanics.

Psychedelic Furies.

OK. I'm done. Honestly.

flamingo-rinse 2. April 2009, 08:44

Last one : Mik DMC.

Mik Not Mik.

<worried look> I hope Mik doesn't take offence - I got a bit carried away...:left: :right:

Zaphira 2. April 2009, 12:25

Nah, he's not easily offended. If I was him I would be honoured.

flamingo-rinse 2. April 2009, 20:22

<bows gracefully and with gratitude> :D
