Kitty's Corner

The boy in the striped pyjamas

,

My regular readers know that I love movies. Every time I go to the cinema and watch a movie, I put a review up here on my blog.

I also watch movies on DVD though, lots of them, but I don't usually make reviews of them. Mostly because it isn't new movies, but also because that would make a hell lot of posts. :D

The other day I rented three movies. "Confessions of a shop-a-holic", which is just a chick flick, "The boat that rocked", which is a movie about piracy radios in the 60s. An okay movie, with lots of good and bouncy music in it. And then there was "The boy in the striped pyjamas", which was really good.

Set during World War II, a story seen through the eyes of Bruno, an eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence. The boys have a great friendship talking every day, enjoying the company. But when the father gives Bruno a Nazi propaganda loving tutor, Bruno becomes confused, is his father an evil man or is his friend the evil one? Love his country and do his duty or don't judge and just stay true to his friend? Bruno must decide all this with some scary consequences ahead of him.

It's a while ago I saw a movie that took me so much by the heart like this one. The story is told in a way that is so realistic and scary, that it frightens me that things like this has happened in the history of man! *shudders*

:star::star::star::star::star::star: out of 6.
Go see it!

Six stars? :eyes: I'll add it to the list, notoriously harsh reviewing cat. It looks kinda like a cartoon at this resolution.

I'll look for this, but rather doubt I'll find it where I am at the moment...which is a ahame, because it sounds like a *real* film, you know what I mean??

Dacotah 16. September 2009, 04:45

Sounds like a good movie.
Thanks for the review Zaphira.

@ Mik ~ Six stars doesn't happen often, that's true. But those two boys played so well, and the story was ... so scary and realistic..

@ Mr Rinse ~ I know what you mean. After having watched the movie I actually checked the box to see if it was based on a true story, but I don't think it is. At least it didn't say so on the box.

@ Carol ~ You're always welcome.

I've been watching something similar to this play out in my neighborhood in the last few weeks. A new family--African-American--has moved in, next door to a white family. Both families have small children, but I haven't seen them play together.

Sunday, I was talking to the children of the white family. I asked them if they were enjoying their new neighbors, and the response from the five-year-old girl was like a punch in the stomach. She said, "They're black, and their mommy won't let them play with white people."

Unfortunately, this happens in my neighborhood a lot.

Zaphira 16. September 2009, 06:35

Oh... that's a shame, really. :frown:

rose-marie 16. September 2009, 06:53

I've been seeing this at the video rental place several times, thinking I should watch it. But I just haven't been in the mood for deep films lateley.
One day, though...

flamingo-rinse 16. September 2009, 07:02

@Rose - if you want a laugh, not deep, get this one out. It's hy-larious

Thanks for the tip, Nick.
Christopher Walken as Caesar, the Exterminator sounds promising! :D

flamingo-rinse 16. September 2009, 08:54

He is A GENIUS!! You'll love it  The interaction between the two brothers is just so funny

Spaggyj 16. September 2009, 09:08

I remember hearing about this one some time ago, but I don't think I knew much about it. It sounds excellent - so I'll add it to the list, too

Furie 16. September 2009, 09:52

It's not a true story. In fact, the book has been panned by the Jewish community for misrepresenting the concentration camps as all children were put to death immediately and the presence of a child in the camp supposedly trivialises what happened there. Doesn't change the fact that it's an interesting alternate history story. I hope it keeps the book's ending.

And is still going on. We have a knack of manufacturing differences between ourselves and other members of the species, and making them more important than the similarities.

Minenow 17. September 2009, 00:25

I may just have to watch it...

Some things as a child are so special that bringing them to the big screen ruins them...

I was afraid that would be the case with this book. My mom read this to me every night when I was a child for a solid two years, or so she says.

This looks like a great story! Isn't there some post of movie on demand internet service available? It would be wonderfull if I could just download it and watch it. :left:. (for a reasonable fee of course. I don't approve of blatant piracy)

flamingo-rinse 18. September 2009, 09:06

1) Blockbuster online

2) Cinemanow

...don't know if they're any good though... :left:

I saw this movie, and it's indeed very good. I would give it 5 out of 6 stars though, since I think the characters could have been worked out even more brilliant.

The movie starts with the quote:

Childhood is measured out by sounds and smells and sights, before the dark hour of reason grows.

I think its very true, but that reason is actually mostly things that are taught us. You can "teach" people anything you want. It's very important to have a good teacher!

I think this is a very interesting subject. But it's scary too to know that everything we believe in is also largely taught us. How much can we trust our teachers today...?
