Kitty's Corner

The Bitter Pussy

, , ,

... and it's not pussy as in cat, I'm talking about.

I went to the theatre this weekend to see "The Bitter Pussy", which was a stand up show that skewered the difference between men and women, and pointed out all the many places where men and women are still not equal.

Ditte Hansen, a Danish actress, was alone on stage, and she did a great job. The show was based on a Swedish book that was published last year ("Bitterfittan"). It's about what often happens when two persons with each a career in front of them have a child, and what happens with equality. It's about politicians who make laws in lots of minor areas, but who thinks "equality needs to change with people's attitudes!!" It's about how "we have equality" despite the fact that women have wages that are generally 18 % below men's. It's all about equality between men and woman - and it was very well made.

Like she states:

"Behind every successful man stands a woman with a part time job. Behind every successful woman is a divorce!"

Too bad there were so few men in the theatre.

Wow, another 6 out of 6.

"Equality needs to change with people's attitudes", I didn't understand the meaning of the sentence. Will a woman ever be the president of the USA? :D

clean 4. October 2009, 07:39

I think it's still mind-boggling how there's such a gap in wages. It's 2009 for cryin' out loud ... Homer: Doh!

flamingo-rinse 4. October 2009, 07:54

I like the sound of this play - I'd definitely go to see it

Good question - why not?? NZ has had 2 Women Prime Ministers and UK has had 1 Woman Prime Minister - the voting public can and does vote for Women (thank god)

rose-marie 4. October 2009, 07:58

Sounds like a good play .
You're right - too bad there weren't many men there. Especially men from higher postitions in the industry.

Zaphira 4. October 2009, 09:00

@ Carol ~ I know, it doesn't happen often.

@ Kiran ~ It means that they won't make laws about it, they just want people (i.e. the decision makers) to change their attitude instead. As if that would ever happen...
As for the question about a female president, then I agree with Mr Rinse: Why not? Next time we're having elections here, a woman is running for the prime minister job, and Iceland has a female prime minister right now.

@ David ~ And that number is only the wages. If you include for instance saving up for pensions, the gap is 37 %!! So we take the gap with us into old age. :irked:

@ Mr Rinse ~ There is no doubt that you would have loved the play. I also like Ditte as an actress, she really understands to deliver the points in a humorous way, but still managing to keep the subject on track.

@ Rose ~ I think there were less than 10 guys in the entire theatre... That's a shame, really!

Spaggyj 4. October 2009, 09:10

A play with a good cause. How entertaining was it?

Zaphira 4. October 2009, 09:20

She is a professional actress, with loads of stand up material, so it was very entertaining.

Spaggyj 4. October 2009, 09:31

Sounds very interesting

Furie 4. October 2009, 09:53

Equality is a tricky beast. I believe women should have equal rights as men, yet I've rarely met a woman that didn't give me a dirty look for not giving up my seat on a crowded bus, or one that didn't expect me to hold the door for her in shops.

AnitaMargita 4. October 2009, 10:25

A good way of spending free time, going to the theatre!
Sounds like a good play.

KYren 4. October 2009, 10:59

Rinse, we have had a woman prime minister Indira Gandhi. Now we have woman president Pratibha Patil, and our Loksabha Speaker is Mira Kumar, a woman.
http://mutiny.in/2007/06/14/can-pratibha-patil-become-india’s-first-woman-president/
http://www.breakingupdate.com/news/meira-kumar-files-nomination-ls-speakers-post-43504.html

But does the political scenario of a country reflect the ground reality? We have killed 10 million girls in the last 20 years. Women can be considered as the sixth caste in the caste hierarchy in india. Women and men are different psyhcologically and physically, does that mean we should kill women? Foreigners have this illusion that india is a spiritual country, think twice.

*wonders if anyone else noticed that the baby has manboobs* :left:

Well, I'm a lady type and I hold doors open for people all the time and rarely does anyone say thank you! Manners people!

I have my own set of lavendar tools for fixin' shiyat.

p:

I agree, things should be more equal and without double standards

Zaphira 4. October 2009, 14:47

@ Mik ~ To me there's a huge difference between equality and good manners. I don't expect men to give up their seat for me in the bus, but I do smile and say thank you if someone is so kind to hold the door for me. But I do hold doors for people myself, so I really see it as a matter of manners.

@ Ana ~ I love the theatre! And yes, this play was very good. I'll see if I can get my hands on the book.

@ Kiran ~ Killing women because they are women is weird in my eyes. I mean, no society can survive without women. Is it because your caste system sees them less worth than men, or what?

@ Carol ~

@ Hermitess ~ I hadn't noticed the man boobs. :D
I surely hope that something will happen to the equality, and rather sooner than later!

KYren 4. October 2009, 15:03

Zap, please read the comments on the article about Pratibha Patil, you'll get the answer. This article lists the reasons behind the female foeticide here: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa4036/is_200302/ai_n9233242/
I am going to write about this in my blog.

derWandersmann 4. October 2009, 15:44

The piece sounds very interesting ... there's no denying that women are caught in a double bind not of their own making.

A pity I don't know Danish.

And BTW ... that actress looks VERY familiar, yet I can't find anything in which I might have seen her.

Furie 4. October 2009, 16:28

Exactly kitty, and that's why you deserve to get treated with equality. Others want equality in their lives but are unwilling to give up the few benefits they get out of an unequal gender system. They want equal pay grades and equal standing but still to have guys treat them like princesses. As a campaigner for man rights it really gets on my tits.

Wow, whew, gotta catch my girly breath. THAT was freakin' hilarious. Where do you come up with these?

:sst: don't tell so I don't get my girl liscense revoked... I totally agree! But I must mention every time I've gone on a date and tried to pay for everything or my own the guy tends to get offended! Then I get "the lecture" about how 'he' can pay for me.

Furie 4. October 2009, 18:04

Ah, the poor souls who believe all the advertising messages that they're not real men unless they can pay for everything to look after their little lady. Yes, we call them Cro-mag Yuppies. They bash girls over the head by buying them dinner at a cheap restaurant, drag them by their hair back to their caves where they use their tribal dance music to woo them into bed before worshipping a black obelisk.

Zaphira 4. October 2009, 19:02

Do they actually have beds in their caves? :left:

Furie 4. October 2009, 20:07

You didn't know? :eyes: Innocent kitty.

derWandersmann 4. October 2009, 20:10

Surely, you've heard of bedrock?

Zaphira 4. October 2009, 20:11

I thought... but... but.... awww

Aqualion 4. October 2009, 20:20

Cunts... Don't we love 'em...

It's good, the theater still dares to cover political issues, now that television has sold out for good.

ellinidata 5. October 2009, 00:12

if more men had breats cancer the cure would have been found already !
I love men,
but if one goes and checks simple things i.e. dry clean charges, shaving razors (just to mention minor things....),
he/she will realize that,
women not only
do not earn as much as men,
but they are charged more for the same services or items (and that it is a fact)!
It is sad that many men forget
they came to this life by a a woman :frown:

thanks for the post  6*s out of 6 it is perfect!

flamingo-rinse 5. October 2009, 06:29

I must point out that lots of men see women as people of *at least* equal status, ability, skill and value - and lots of us consider women to be the most essential part of life, of our lives and we value you all, and respect and admire and envy your innate healing and nurturing skills. I expect lots of people will think that sounds like bullshit, but it isn't. Every month, Women show how much more complex and amazing they are....you all, girls, are fabtastic creatures - thank you

Hermitess 5. October 2009, 06:29

*snicker* Cro-mag men monkey

I should probably clarify that I haven't been on a date in 16 years.

:left:

I'm REALLY unpopular ever since I got married. :eyes: Things could be different by now...

MirabelaTM 5. October 2009, 15:45

Zaph, I think I would like to watch this movie  Thank you for sharing it.

Zaphira 5. October 2009, 16:19

@ Lion ~ I agree with you whole heartedly. With both.

@ Angeliki ~ Thank you for that comment. It's also a fact that girls have to work harder for their grades. There have been made tests - if a student hand in an assignment, the grades are higher if it's a boy's name on it.

@ Mr Rinse ~ Fabtastic comment, thank you. And I do know that not all men see women as worth less than men.

@ Hermitess ~ There's no need to date when you've got yourself a Hermit!

@ Mira ~ It's not a movie, but a play in the theatre, but yes, I think you'd like it too!

MirabelaTM 5. October 2009, 16:28

I'm sorry :frown:

Zaphira 5. October 2009, 16:30

No no, don't be sorry please. I didn't mean to be harsh.

MirabelaTM 5. October 2009, 16:34

You are not harsh
