Kitty's Corner

Pig Flu - H1N1 - Hysteria??

, ,

Scenario number one:

My dad goes to the hospital for a semi-annual health check. He waits in the waiting room like he is supposed to, and after half an hour the nurse calls his name. He gets up, approaches her, and sticks his hand out to say hello. The nurse takes one big step away and says: "We don't shake hands with the patients. Flu risk, you know..."
After additional 10 minutes, the doctor comes in, shakes hands with my dad, and says: "Hello, I'm your doctor!", and my dad replies: "Oh, but I thought you guys didn't shake hands with the patients?"
The doc rolls his eyes, lowers his voice, and says to my dad: "Nurses...!"

Scenario number two:

I'm heading for the ladies room at work. I see another woman heading for the restrooms too, but since we have more than one, I just continue walking. Then I see her open her bag and pick up a paper towel. She wraps it around the door handle, and opens the door to the ladies room without touching the handle itself.
I stop and stare. She is going to the toilet, and she doesn't want to touch the door handle on her way in. I would perhaps have understood it better if it had been on her way out - I mean, after all you never know if other people wash their hands after having been out there...

:star:

So what I experience here is that some people get hysterical about this influenza A. And sure, it's not nice to be ill. I'd rather not be either, but common sense will help a lot.

Our national board of health says that the population here in general has no need to be worried. Most people who become infected with Influenza H1N1 will only experience mild symptoms that will be over in a few days. So why is it that some people suffer from hysteria? It's a flu, not the plague!

And it's easy to minimize the risk of catching the flu:

  • wash your hands frequently with soap and water

  • Cough or sneeze in your sleeve instead of in your hand

  • Stay at home if you are ill!

Now go and have yourself a good weekend!

And you have a good weekend too, Kitty!
*sneeze* :left: :right:

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 04:17

Thanks Phantom.
Now go wash your hands, and I might hug you afterwards. :D

Dacotah 16. October 2009, 04:28

I don't touch the bathroom door handle going in either.
Have a great week end.

Stardancer 16. October 2009, 04:40

I had that flu.

It didn't kill me.

:D

Hermitess 16. October 2009, 06:04

I laugh at the flu! ha ha ha ha!

Strangely enough, with all my health problems I never get the flu! (she says exactly 3 days before it shows up :left: :D )

I always joke that I save it up for worse illnesses.
:D
Bad joke I know, but I gotta keep it light! p:

rose-marie 16. October 2009, 06:55

I've worked with people in category 2, only it wasn't the flu they were afraid of - it was bacteria in general.
Pretty interesting to watch...

jekav 16. October 2009, 07:00

Well it's blown out of proportions by the media. This virus was meant to kill half of the people in the world at the least! Well I guess they got that quite wrong, it seems not more that just a little flu

Public toilets are always a big problem, i'm glad I'm a guy, and I can do the job from a distance :D

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 07:07

@ Carol ~ But do you touch it on the way out? :left:
Thank you, you too!

@ Star ~ I must tell you that I'm glad it didn't! :D

@ Hermitess ~ It seems that you can only have a certain amount of illnesses and that you've had your part of them!

@ Rose ~ Just like in that Jack Nicholson movie, where he washes hands all the time... um... "As good as it gets", I think. Pretty amusing to watch, yes.

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 07:08

@ Jurjen ~ From a distance, - I've got a female colleague who says the pees standing up. "It gives good thigh muscles", as she says. :D

Diabolical 16. October 2009, 07:09

We've had a few cases where I live and if someone sniffles then people freak out. It's crazy!
People should try to build up their immunity by chewing someone elses used gum. saw that in a season of Malcolm in the Middle. p:

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 07:24

Used gum doesn't sound as if it's worth the chewing!

Diabolical 16. October 2009, 07:55

You'll still build up some immunity p:

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 07:58

Probably, but I still like my gum with some kind of taste. P:

Diabolical 16. October 2009, 08:00

Previous-people's-Spit is a taste..

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 08:10

Eeeeewwww!!! :yuck:

You're so gross! P:

Dacotah 16. October 2009, 08:26

Zaphria, nope, not going out either.

Spaggyj 16. October 2009, 09:56

I'm sick of this hysteria too - it's not a big killer, only to those like a few children or elderly who don't get the small treatments when they need them.
Honestly, everyone's running scared, it's ridiculous!

Furie 16. October 2009, 10:50

Nurses work with a variety of illnesses all day every day while most hospital doctors only meet patients for a little while. Doctors also tend to be better insured against illness. It's natural that nurses be more paranoid about these things. As for saying it's because of flu, it's probably because they're not allowed to mention SARS for fear of patients running and jumping from the windows in panic.

clean 16. October 2009, 11:43

I can't understand the door thing. Why doesn't she do what I do and urinate outside the door to the toilet while walking past? This is a fast-paced world we live in! I haven't got time to actually go in there ... !

Furie 16. October 2009, 13:13

Because then she'd be standing in a pool of your pee while she goes? :left:

Suntana 16. October 2009, 15:37

 @ the cat on the toilet!

Nnnnggg, I'm gonna have to say I understand the woman's action in scenario #2. Wait! Put the lynching paraphernalia down for a minute. The inside handle and the outside handle are in too close proximity. They're neighbors. Germs, bacteria and viruses no doubt go jogging in the neighborhood. What if the person who didn't wash their hands remembers that they left their cell phone on the floor of the stall? Then they go back in ... contaminating the outside handle for infinity and beyond because nobody ever cleans either handle. :yikes: :insane: :faint:

I hate it when I'm at a luncheon, get together, Etc. already actively eating and some later arriver decides they want to do the handshaking thing.

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 15:39

@ Kimmie ~ It's as if the media has been able to blow this a little bit out of proportions...

@ Mik ~ My dad found it very funny that the doctor said that while the nurse was in the room.

@ David ~ I think that stunt is a tad easier for men.

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 15:41

@ Sunny ~ Okay, let's say that bacteria knows how to jog around in the neighbourhood, and that you manage to get germs on your hands when you go into the toilet. Then you do what you have to do in there, wash your hands, then take a paper tissue and cover the door handle with. I mean... You are washing your hands after toilet visits, aren't you?

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 15:41

@ Phantom ~ Wash off, or scrape off?? :yikes:

Gees, and I thought that puddle was to wash off my shoes before going in!

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 15:42

Ooops... I swear there was a comment from Phantom a minute ago. :left:

*listens to the voices that aren't there*

Hmm.. interesting. :D

Phantom2 16. October 2009, 15:44

Phantoms ?

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 15:45

Yep. In the (My)Opera... :insane:

Hermitess 16. October 2009, 15:48

I usually just hold it until my eyes water and then race home.

Ok not always but I do use the paper on the door knob occassionally going out, depending on where I am at. But i also wash my hands as soon as I get home from town.

Furie 16. October 2009, 15:51

That nurse will be kindly offering the doctor a cup of hot steaming ebola later in the week.

Suntana 16. October 2009, 16:09

Yeah, Zaph, but for a few hazardous minutes, the germs have free reign of your skin. :yikes: :insane:  :knight:

ellinidata 16. October 2009, 16:56

 I do not shake hands with strangers ,
I do wash my hands often,
(it is a very serious flu),
but I always, ALWAYS pet the cats :cat:

Zaphira 16. October 2009, 17:13

@ Hermitess ~ I must say that it's more like something else is running, but my eyes.

@ Mik ~ And the doctor will probably be so tired so he just says thank you and drink it.

@ Sunny ~ Okay.. :left: Wild germs! :yikes:

@ Angeliki ~ What a nice last rule, I love that!!

garlingmatthews 16. October 2009, 17:14

The stupid thing is, this hysteria is based on statistics rather than any characteristics of this disease in itself. We're due a panendemic. Last year avian 'flu', this year swine, next year fly cold? A bluebottle, run, run!

It's to keep your feet warm on a cold morning!

Phantom2 16. October 2009, 22:07

Zaphira 17. October 2009, 04:21

Oh dear! :lol::faint:

garlingmatthews 17. October 2009, 07:19

Is a semi-annual check-up normal? I nearly never go to the doctor, but the times that I have gone, I've had a very hard time getting help. We need more doctors!

fammcdon 17. October 2009, 09:10

I go for a check-up every 3 months with a physical once a year. Don't think that is typical though. But the only reason I do it is because she will only write scripts for 3-months worth of pain meds (Ultracet) at a time. Oh, and usually come home with a cold from at least one of the visits. *ah-choo*

garlingmatthews 17. October 2009, 09:19

Greaaaaaaat :/

fammcdon 17. October 2009, 09:24

I try not to touch anything but I am rather fond of breathing.

garlingmatthews 17. October 2009, 09:25

 Hard to avoid that one.

Zaphira 17. October 2009, 11:52

My dad goes to semi-annual check ups because he has had problems with his heart.

Hermitess 17. October 2009, 11:52

I also go to the dr every three months for my meds as well. I think it's the insurance co's that won't let the drs write prescriptions for longer. My doctor is great and talks and answers questions. Unfortunately this also gets him behind in appointments! So waiting is mandatory! Unless you get an early appointment, which I tend to do

garlingmatthews 17. October 2009, 12:03

Sorry to hear that. :frown:

Hermitess 17. October 2009, 12:37

Is he ok Zaphira? My dad has heart problems too. :frown:

Zaphira 17. October 2009, 14:21

Yeah, he is ok. He's so stubborn, and that's what scares me the most. Dads!

Furie 17. October 2009, 14:30

Good thing he didn't pass being stubborn on to his daughter eh?

Zaphira 17. October 2009, 16:30

Believe me - he's much much worse than me! :D

qlue 17. October 2009, 20:09

I learned the other day that health care workers like doctors and nurses aren't allowed to scrub their hands with a brush. Apparently, that causes cracks and fissures in the skin and actually increases the risk of infections. p:.
