Kitty's Corner

A good offer??

, , ,

We often have morning meetings at work. And when we invite people to come to meetings in the mornings we always serve breakfast. We have a small kitchen with an oven and a microwave, and we have a fridge too, so all it takes is a bit of planning.

My boss had bought some buns for a morning meeting the other day. She had bought two bags of buns, because of a special offer at the baker's.

But let's take a closer look at that "special offer":

The white label tells the original price: 18.95 DKK - that's approximately 2.5 Eur, but that's irrelevant right now. The yellow label shows the "good offer": Two bags for 38 DKK. That means that if you buy two bags, you'll pay 0.10 DKK more than if you've bought two individual bags.

But hey, further down on the yellow label there's another noticeable thing. It says that the regular price is 25 DKK, and not 18.95 DKK. You know what that is? That's cheating! Selling things at regular prices, and camouflaging them and make it look like an offer - that's bad style. Shame on you, Føtex, for cheating your costumers!

What is text messages for??Mama, I just killed a dog...

Welcome to the capitalistic world.

Dacotah 18. October 2009, 06:08

It doesn't look like cheating to me. It seems that the regular suggested retail price is 25 DKK but they sell theirs cheaper for 18.95 DKK.

garlingmatthews 18. October 2009, 07:03

It's their own brand!

Ye call baked goods handwork?

Zaphira 18. October 2009, 07:15

@ dW ~ Thanks, I think.

@ Carol ~ If that was the case, would the offer be "two for 37.90"?

@ Gavin ~ Only these kinds are called that. Lots of poppyseed. :D

garlingmatthews 18. October 2009, 07:23

...which can make you fail a drug test :eyes:

Dacotah 18. October 2009, 07:25

That's nothing! Just wait until you notice the use-by date ...

Spaggyj 18. October 2009, 09:31

I've seen a few offers like that before. They must think we're stupid  .
Although, on the other side of things, I've seen special offers that mean buying two of something is cheaper than buying one :D

clean 18. October 2009, 09:36

We get ones over here similar to that. Say something costs two dollars. The sign on it says, "Get two for four dollars!" What a bargain ...

garlingmatthews 18. October 2009, 09:39

I wonder if buy enough of them, will you get them for free?

I hope that they write the date in reverse order from Sweden (yymmdd), otherwise Mr. Clean has spotted a serious problem :yikes:

clean 18. October 2009, 10:53

Furie 18. October 2009, 11:04

Mmm, opiate bagels. :chef:

Furie 18. October 2009, 11:06

So the normal price is 18.95 but the sale tag says it's 25 and you can get two for 38? Little shits! Hope you unsheathed those claws of yours?

rose-marie 18. October 2009, 11:59

Oooh, sneaky! Could it be that the yellow price is including tax?
Still... sneaky!

Zaphira 18. October 2009, 12:29

@ Gavin ~ Mmm I've heard that. I've never taken one though.
They've written the date 07.10.09 - 7th of October 2009 - p:

@ Mit ~ Hiya!

@ David ~ The big white letters on the bag says "baked today", so they better be baked today.

@ Kimmie ~ I'm sure lots of people fall for the "Special price"-trick.

@ Mik ~ That's exactly the deal - and I have indeed!

Zaphira 18. October 2009, 12:29

@ Rose ~ No, it's not legal to advertise with prices without taxes here, except for in the shops that only sell to other companies.

Moesring 18. October 2009, 13:29

Two bags for 38 DKK. That means that if you buy two bags, you'll pay 0.10 DKK more than if you've bought two individual bags.

If you ever go to that shop, perhaps you should say "I don't want to buy these two packs of buns together. I want to buy two individual packs so I can get them at their individual price." :left:

ellinidata 18. October 2009, 13:57

:bomb: thieves!!! that's what they are! shameless in this case! :furious:

jekav 18. October 2009, 14:11

 I love this kind of foolish cheating! Now everyone knows how stupid they are :D

Hermitess 18. October 2009, 14:46

Yes, must watch those "sales". They do that here. Mark up prices then put it on "sale" at the regular price or have bargain buys that are 2 for $5 when, like Clean said above, the items cost $2.50 each. I've noticed now that some companies are putting less in a package and keeping the price the same rather than marking up the prices! Sneeky sneeky

derWandersmann 18. October 2009, 15:16

Yes ... there was a piece on NPR just yesterday on exactly that.

When I was working as a picture-frame builder in a small shop, we regularly noticed that the big-box stores would have half-price sales in which their half-price was higher than our regular price ... they would mark their stuff up to the sky, then cut it in half. Our stuff which was marked up more honestly, was cheaper without a discount. Our store eventually went out of business.

RedFreya 18. October 2009, 15:41

I`m surprised that it does not fall foul of consumer protection laws. Trading Standards Officers here(UK)would,I think, see it as a bit misleading. I`m sure the EU has a Directive covering this !!

Zaphira 18. October 2009, 18:29

@ Moe ~ And that's exactly what I would have done if it was me who had bought the buns.

@ Angeliki ~ You said it! And I couldn't agree more!

@ Jurjen ~ I kind of hope that someone from the company sees this and blush a little. :D

@ Hermitess ~ That's another example of sneakyness! They've done that with cornflakes here. Kellogg's used to have 750 g in a pack - now the biggest boxes contain 600 g and are called "Bonus pack".

@ dW ~ Your example proves that the "creative" kind of marketing works. Sadly enough.

@ Freya ~ I think you're right, it does fall foul of consumer protection laws. I just think that most people don't discover that they've been tricked.

darkesthour 18. October 2009, 19:16

Someone has to pay for the extra label...

Zaphira 18. October 2009, 19:20

It doesn't have to me. :left:

garlingmatthews 18. October 2009, 19:21

  Actually, you'd be surprised what those things can cost. Companies are very strange in what they will and will not pay for.

darkesthour 18. October 2009, 19:25

Cant expect the 'poor' company to pay for all that extra advertisng

Pusilille 18. October 2009, 19:35

 Without much sense Zap

clean 18. October 2009, 21:31

So the 'Incredible Shrinking Groceries' plague has come to your shores, then? The most glaring one recently was Cadbury changing blocks of chocolate from 300 grams to 200 - 220 grams, but keeping the same price. According to them it was 'what consumers wanted'.

"Oh, please make us pay the same for less! I don't feel intelligent enough!"

fammcdon 18. October 2009, 23:49

Our canned vegatables used to come in 16 ounce tins. Now they are 12-14 ounce cans. At the same price of course.

garlingmatthews 19. October 2009, 03:57

They do it because people are less sensitive to quantity reduction than price increase. It works.

Zaphira 19. October 2009, 04:01

I worked in a candy store years ago and they did something "funny" with the sizes of the candy bags. They had these large bags of candy, with 250 g in them. Then, over time, they reduced the amount of candy, first to 220 g, then to 200 g, and last to 180 g. After a couple of months with 180 g they re-introduced the original size of 250 g with slogans like: Now you get more!!

garlingmatthews 19. October 2009, 08:33

 Oh, dear.

Hermitess 19. October 2009, 13:19

WOW thanks. :left:

I did notice on my last shopping trip that some things had reduced in price up to $1 less (and size was the same). I suppose the bad economy had to do with that. Yay for cheaper ice cream!

Minenow 26. October 2009, 03:37

Hermitess.... where do you go shopping? Everything from heat to water to garbage pickup has gone up and groceries are no exception.

I haven't had a raise in three years despite stellar reviews because my job is tied to state budgets.

Bet the Governor got a damn raise or some lovely extra perks. :furious:

Minenow 26. October 2009, 03:38

:D Sorry, I gots a weeeeee bit mad.

I'm over it.

Zaphira 26. October 2009, 04:54

Some grocery prices have dropped here too, fortunately milk is one of them.

The price on heat, water and other necessities is just going up and up. :irked:

Furie 26. October 2009, 10:15

That'll be the new government.

Minenow 26. October 2009, 13:32

*chuckles* I need to change professions then.

garlingmatthews 26. October 2009, 14:36

Everything has gone up here too. Strange, Zaph, that your milk has gone down and not mine when we probably have the same supplier (Arla, a Danish/Swedish co-op).

Zaphira 26. October 2009, 16:43

@ Mik ~ Probably not for long! *makes another little bomb ready*

@ Minnie ~ Please say that you don't aim for a place in the government. :D

@ Gavin ~ Yeah, unless your prices didn't went up as much as ours. Milk went up with almost 80 %, oatmeal almost the same, so I think it's only fair that prices come down to a natural level again.

garlingmatthews 26. October 2009, 16:48

Wow. Okay. We had deflation in the food market four years ago.

Zaphira 26. October 2009, 16:52

That explains it then!
I considered buying my own cow at that time.

garlingmatthews 26. October 2009, 17:03

 I occasionally toy with the idea of buying a farm. Just to horrify my folks. p:

Zaphira 26. October 2009, 17:18

A farm?! Okaaay, that would horrify me too! :D

garlingmatthews 26. October 2009, 17:20

No boss, no time stamp machine, just endless hours of back-breaking labour :wizard:

Zaphira 26. October 2009, 17:44

I think I'll pass! Back breaking labour - and smelly too - not something for an urban girl.

garlingmatthews 26. October 2009, 17:52

 yeah... I like my café living too. But some summer days, a boy can dream

Zaphira 26. October 2009, 17:54

Yes, of course - dreaming is good.
I sometimes think that it would be nice to grow own veggies and stuff, but it seems that I can kill almost anything that's green.
