Nutella!!

, , ,

I love nutella.

It is a delicious hazelnut flavoured sweet spread, invented by an Italian guy, Pietro Ferrero. Pietro owned a patisserie in Alba, in the Langhe district of Piedmont, Italy. During WWII it became very difficult to get your hands on chocolate, so Pietro figured out that he could make the chocolate last longer if he blended it with roasted and minced hazelnuts.

The original version of nutella was called "pasta gianduja," pasta which means paste, and "gianduja" which is the name of a carnival character famous to the region. Pasta gianduja was made in loaves and wrapped in tinfoil, so it could be sliced and placed on bread.

Piotr changed the recipe in 1949 and changed the concept into a sandwich spread instead, and renamed the product "supercrema gianduja". In 1964 his son Michele changed the name again, this time to "nutella".

It was an instant success, and is now sold in over 75 countries.

In Italy, in Bologna, there's even a nutelleria. So next time I'm visiting Italy, I want to go to Bologna and taste a piece of what must be heaven: Crepes with nutella, corn flakes with nutella, nutellapizzas, nutellabaguettes and so on and so on... I swear I don't leave that place until I'm nauseous! lol

It has just come to my attention that there's such a thing as "World nutellaDay" every year on February 5th. It started in 2007 in Italy.
I missed it this year, but I'll definitely not miss it next year!

The fine thing about nutellais that it goes with many things:

You can spread it on all sort of bread and bagels, muffins, cupcakes, layered cakes, crêpes, pancakes, on cereal, or just eat it plain from the jar.

Use it to pamper yourself, eat it for breakfast, for brunch or on rye bread for lunch. Have it with your dessert. The options are many, as you can see! up

It's so easy to get addicted. One spoonful and I just knew I had to have more. love

Did I mention that I heart nutella? I really do.

And now, dear friends, you'll have to excuse me.

I've got stuff to do...

KittyliciousZaphira Monday, May 2, 2011 1:09:00 PM

@ Flarin ~ Especially nice on crumpets. I had one this morning and it was truly yummy! happy

@ Lion ~ I've only had it on a crepe once, and the crepe was really awful so I tried to lick the Nutella off instead. It was at one of those "crepe bars" in Copenhagen in the middle of Strøget so I had a few people staring in disbelief! lol

@ Kimmie ~ And I like it! :yum:

@ Mik ~ What the hell is the last one thinking?! confused

@ Rania ~ Yes, but I'm back now. yes

@ Duckling ~ Mmm, that does sound very good! I imagine it would work with most kinds of fruit. happy

Sounds good. It's funny how taste develops, because when I was a kid I absolutely hated orange flavour mixed with chocolate flavour, but now I have an almost religious veneration towards that particular shade.

KYrenKYren Monday, May 2, 2011 7:00:29 PM

smile It seems many people love nutella. I wonder if I can get it here in Pune. Maybe I'd get it in Big Bazaar or Food Mart.

Mad Scientistqlue Monday, May 2, 2011 8:09:05 PM

put it in a mini ice-cube tray, freeze it and then dip the little blocks in melted chocolate to make really yummy chocolate treats. chef.

You mean put the frozen blocks into warm milk?

Yes, it is strange. I used to HATE marzipan and now I love it! Then there were those foods that I 'disliked' even though I had never tried them, like avocado. Then I tried it and I really like it:)

No I mean melting some chocolate in a bowl and dropping the frozen blocks in and then scoop them out and put them on a a plastic sheet to set! up.

H82typ Tuesday, May 3, 2011 2:46:36 AM

Ok, I'm trying me some of this stuff! I keep hearing about it from Nerak, and her blog, now here... *dives into a vat of*

KittyliciousZaphira Tuesday, May 3, 2011 4:51:13 AM

It's funny about how tastes that changes. As a kid I used to love the taste of cucumbers. Then all of a sudden I had enough and didn't eat them from over 10 years. Now I eat them again, but only pealed.
I know. It's a thing! wink

FlaRin Tuesday, May 3, 2011 5:01:43 AM

Haha.I used to hate Tea as a kid. Drink it *lots* now smile Ditto milk - had a bad experience with milk at school when I was 5 or 6 and only started to drink it again late last year!! Love it, now smile

KittyliciousZaphira Tuesday, May 3, 2011 5:20:28 AM

I've always loved my milk. I don't hope I'll ever start disliking it. I still believe that it's good for you, even thought there are people who try to convince me that it's not. I don't care. I like it. up

FlaRin Tuesday, May 3, 2011 5:30:55 AM

It's pretty good for you, although actually Goat's milk is closer to human mother's milk in it's molecular structure than Cows milk. smile Easier to digest, and all that smile

\\edit : I know some people say it's bad for you - but they probably carry on eating BBQs (quite carcinogenic), take-aways, eggs & bacon (yum), chips, burgers et al, and they worry about Milk?? Makes me laugh. Hahaha. Like that smile

Martin K™Aqualion Tuesday, May 3, 2011 6:16:15 AM

Due to alcohol being my main source of nourishment for periods of my life, there are certain food items that my stomack won't accept. One of them is milk. Even a small amount of milk in coffee makes me sick. Strangely enough coffee doesn't hurt me at all. According to the doctors my condition would give me the excact opposite reaction and they recommend no coffee and lots of milk, but in reality, to me, it's the other way around.

Weird.

I think everyone probably knows about my views on milk, even though I like yogurt. Yes, I am WEIRD!

But yes, that reminds me of my dad. He says that he wont eat smoked meats because they are smoked and smoke is bad, but then eats fatty foods and white bread etc :|

KittyliciousZaphira Tuesday, May 3, 2011 6:39:04 AM

Haha, some people are just... rolleyes

I had a major discussion with a girl from work over a work dinner once. I had Pepsi Max with my dinner :yum:, and everybody else had wine. She went on and on about how bad sweeteners are for your body and blah blah blah, and even though I pointed out how much fat she had consumed over the last few hours, and that that's bad for you too, she just wouldn't stop.

Please - it's a free country. Let me have my Pepsi Max, and you can eat all the grease you want! wink

FlaRin Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:30:31 AM

Haha - yeah - I must say that my daughter (15) is unable to consume any dairy product - she has a full and total allergy - milk, cheese, chocolate, anything at all that has any milk based products in it (and there are quite a lot)...so I know all about having to be dairy free, and living with all that it entails (ditto gluten free, for similar reasons) - and I understand fully not actually liking milk, but if you *do* like it - drink up, it's not poison smile Nor is Pepsi Max, thank the dear lol

Mad Scientistqlue Tuesday, May 3, 2011 9:28:12 PM

strange you should talk about coffee and milk with regards to alcohol Martin. left.
Back in the days when I was still consuming alcohol on occasion, I tended to always over-indulge on those occasions. faint.
When hungover, I couldn't eat or drink most things, and bother coffee and milk were among the 'don't even try it' list. scared.
The only thing I could consume was sweet, black tea. yuck. (think treacle)
And I had to consume over a litre of the stuff before I re-hydrated enough to start recovering! scared.

DHdarkesthour Tuesday, May 3, 2011 9:37:39 PM

That sounds unpleasant, I preferred water for such occasions which I must admit are very much a thing of the past now

FlaRin Tuesday, May 3, 2011 9:49:22 PM

I virtually drink nothing alcoholic at all now, no beer, wine or anything - and amazingly enough feel much better for it, can get that 'feel good' effect without it smile it has surprised me a lot, over the last year or so.

I was encouraged to just stop entirely one day by a dear friend and that's exactly what I did. It's excellent (and thank you, dear friend, you know who you are happy )

I only ever got headaches as hangovers, and I *hate* headaches! bigsmile I guess water & tea were the drinks I took to counter that, and masses of whatever painkillers I had to hand.

theoddbod Tuesday, May 3, 2011 10:55:08 PM

I think too much Nutella might produce Kitty's Facebook version left
Nasty stuff yuckp

theoddbod Tuesday, May 3, 2011 10:55:35 PM

It looked way better when yuck was green irked

FlaRin Tuesday, May 3, 2011 11:26:12 PM

I liked the green one - now *every* smilie is a Simpson rolleyes

Here's a recipe that you might like, Pussy Cat. You'd have to figure out how to eliminate all the cream though - but I know you could do that....up :

Nutella steamed pudding
(serves 4-6)

Ingredients
1 cup (240ml) Nutella
1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream
4 tablespoons (50g) butter (plus more for greasing the bowl)
pinch of salt
6 eggs, separated: yolks in one bowl, whites in another
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/3 cup (65g) sugar
1/4 cup (35g) flour

1. Grease the bowl generously with butter.
2. In a small heavy pan, heat the cream, butter and salt over medium low. Lower the heat to low and add the Nutella. Whisk together until totally combined. Set aside until just a bit warm.
3. Add the egg yolks to a large bowl and whisk until a bit frothy. Pour the Nutella mixture into the eggs, whisking while you add it so the eggs don’t curdle.
4. In a separate bowl, whip the egg white with an electric mixer. When the egg whites start looking foamy, add the cream of tartar and the sugar. Whisk until stiff peaks form, but don’t let it dry out.
5. Stir in about a quarter of the egg whites into the egg yolk and Nutella mixture. Gently fold the rest of the egg whites in with a spatula. Sprinkle on the flour and gently fold that in as well.
6. Prepare the steamed pudding (a good BBC cookery link for that here smile). Set a tea towel in the bottom of a huge pot that will hold the pudding bowl. Add the bowl and pour boiling water until halfway up the sides of the bowl. Set over medium low heat (until the water is simmering) and cover the pot. (You may need to add water part of the way through)
7. Steam the pudding for an hour. Remove from heat and let stand for 15 minutes. This is a good time to prepare the Nutella sauce.

Nutella sauce
1/4 cup (60ml) Nutella
3 tablespoons boiling water

Add the Nutella to a medium-sized bowl. While whisking, pour the boiling water over the Nutella. It may seize up at first, but as the water gets incorporated, it will become smooth again.

Sweetened creme fraiche
1/2 cup (120ml) creme fraiche
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine the creme fraiche, sugar and vanilla. Stir together until smooth.

Serve with either sweetened creme fraiche or nutella sauce or both up

I found this recipe at...
http://crispywaffle.com/
...where there is also a recipe for Nutella and Creme Fraich Ice Cream :yum:

KittyliciousZaphira Wednesday, May 4, 2011 4:55:27 AM

Nutella overdose on its way! lol

That recipe take a big jar of Nutella! faint

As for the drinking - I don't drink much, if at all. And the weird thing is that when I go out, social event, both with friends and also at work, it's as if people *need* me to tell the reason for me not drinking. Many are the questions like: "so um, is there a specific reason for you not drinking...?" - and I can see they almost fear the answer! rolleyes
I mean - what is the matter with "It's just a choice I made"? confused

Mad Scientistqlue Wednesday, May 4, 2011 5:12:57 AM

I could never keep water down when hungover. awww.

DHdarkesthour Wednesday, May 4, 2011 5:36:00 AM

I stopped drinking for 10 years, couldnt stomach even half a pint of beer, now I just drink beer, no spirits

I get that too. And when I tell people that it is because I am an alcoholic, many will start talking about how they have considered if they may have a problem themselves, and sometimes go into details about this, and I am like 'hey, that's not my problem, dude, go see a doctor', but I normally just do the smiling-and-nodding routine and let them talk. So, I have managed to get over my problems. This doesn't mean I am holding the philosopher's stone in my pocket, man. I can't do anything about your problem. Nobody can, except you.

Know what I mean?

I get that too. "So, why don't you drink?". I've told people I had an alcohol problem (fake story) and then they ask even more questions. I once told someone it was against my religion (also a lie), but then they wanted to know what religion it was. I don't drink because I don't want to, but for most people, that isn't a good enough excuse. I haven't had an alcoholic drink since October 2009, nearly two years yay:) I used to get drunk from 3 fingers of beer, so I imagine I would get drunk very fast now!

FlaRin Wednesday, May 4, 2011 10:13:59 AM

I talk too much if I get drunk (hard to believe, I know rolleyes) and, although am (or was, when it used to happen) a very happy drunk, I suffer from *total* memory recall - and to be honest...that's not always a good thing lol

Mad Scientistqlue Thursday, May 5, 2011 3:07:35 AM

When someone asks you, "why don't you drink?" turn the tables on them and ask them, "why do you drink?".
If they don't change the subject, turn up the heat, ask them about thier 'problem'. devil.
If you can't get them to change the subject within thirty seconds, you're not trying hard enough. p.

Mad Scientistqlue Thursday, May 5, 2011 3:11:19 AM

and yes, I'm aware of the spelling mistake in that comment but it's not like anyone will actually notice right? doh

DHdarkesthour Thursday, May 5, 2011 3:18:51 AM

What, the "whiz don't you drink bit?" Nope, never saw it left right

KittyliciousZaphira Thursday, May 5, 2011 4:38:04 AM

I just find it a bit weird to be asked about the not drinking bit. We all make choices every day without being held responsible by complete strangers. rolleyes

Martin K™Aqualion Thursday, May 5, 2011 6:18:34 AM

It's very simple, actually. Psychology. By not drinking you prove that it is possible not to drink. By proving this and thereby suggesting that not drinking at a party is also social acceptable and perhaps even the better choice, you put his/her drinking into perspective, and he starts wondering.

Good idea! Though the typical Aussie would give the reason 'Cos I like to like get smashed?'

FlaRin Thursday, May 5, 2011 9:55:47 AM

That's probably the best reason there is...
"why do you drink" - "because I like to get drunk".

Honest, simple & easy to remember - I like it up

DHdarkesthour Thursday, May 5, 2011 8:23:59 PM

By not drinking you are making yourself different from the rest of the people (majority) that do, so its the same behaviour that you get in the school playground with the kid that is different in some way..

galadriel Thursday, May 5, 2011 9:06:08 PM

*puts hands up* That's me! I was the one that was different, 'weird' because I was smart and bad at sport. All the people who picked on me are now fat (they used to be in top shape at 16) and working on Sunday in the shopping centre eiher stacking shelves or selling hair accessories. I became skinny, fit, have a proper job and earn more than they ever will bigsmile I love seeing them in the shops so I can have a secret little laugh to myself:)

DHdarkesthour Thursday, May 5, 2011 9:12:40 PM

Ah, but do you meet them at parties and not drink? bigsmile

FlaRin Thursday, May 5, 2011 9:37:14 PM

Why would you want to meet them at parties?? lol
