Twiggy

, , , ,

Some of you might remember that I bought a bunch of movies a couple of months ago. Among other stuff I bought the first series of Muppet Show. I watch an episode here and there, but since the show was first broadcasted in 1976 I don't know many of the actors that were on the show with the Muppets.

The other day I saw and episode with a girl whose name I recognized. That was Twiggy:

Twiggy's real name is Lesley Hornby, and she was born in 1949 in Neasden, London. She is an English model, actress, and singer. At 16, she became the first prominent British teenage model. She was known for her androgynous looks, large eyes, long eyelashes, extremely thin build, and short hair.

Fashion has not been the same since Twiggy first time was photographed by Barry Lategan. Her unique face with some incredibly large and fascinating eyes caught on.

She weighed only 41 kilos when she became a fashion icon. The designers flocked round the boy girl with the long, thin legs, and they started creating teenage clothes - something completely new in the 1960s, when pleated skirts with a length below the knee, blouses and twinsets pretty much had been "uniforms".

Here's Twiggy on The Muppet Show in 1976.

Twiggy has been in numerous films, for instance "The Blues Brothers" (1980) and "Body Bags" (1993), and she was one of the judges in America's Next Top Model from 2005 to 2007.

In the summer of 2009, beauty company Olay debuted its "Definity Eye Cream" campaign depicting Twiggy. Accusations of airbrushing created a stir with the media and public. A website campaign attracted 700 individual complaints. Procter & Gamble admitted to minor retouching and replaced the image.

Here's what made people react. The picture on the left is how she was shown in the ad, and the picture on the right is how she really looked.

No wonder that people reacted so strongly, but I'd still say she still looks pretty good for a 60 year old! up

She kinda reminds me of Susan Sarandon smile Or Goldie Hawn. One of them. Maybe both lol

Spaggyj Friday, June 10, 2011 10:55:36 AM

Airbrushing seriously damages the female population. Everyone in magazines is airbrushed. They tweak things that do not even need it and teenagers make themselves sick because they're trying to be something that nobody is.
On a lighter note, Twiggy scares me scared

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, June 10, 2011 2:03:46 PM

@ Flarin ~ oh yeah, that's right, she does look a little bit like Goldie Hawn, I hadn't noticed that at all! lol

@ Kimmie ~ I agree with you. I think it was the devil that invented airbrushing!
Twiggy definitely made lots of young women starve themselves to be skinny like her.

Bad WolfCois Friday, June 10, 2011 2:28:21 PM

aah. . Sweet old airbrushing. Making the old you new picture look like a young you back then young you new picture.. left what?? confused

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, June 10, 2011 4:15:05 PM

No it doesn't! bigsmile It makes you look as if you're made of plastic. wink

Bad WolfCois Friday, June 10, 2011 4:38:19 PM

*removes plastic Bad Wolf Versus Kitty action toys from market*

You think people airbrush their pics and then decide they look good there so they go for some plastic surgery? scared

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, June 10, 2011 5:16:22 PM

Nah... or... perhaps... left

*is happy that Kitty got a set of action figures before they were removed* happy

Bad WolfCois Friday, June 10, 2011 5:32:19 PM

women and their plastic toys.. *shakes head* lol

Stardancer Friday, June 10, 2011 10:20:55 PM

I always loved her eyes. And I admire the fact that she doesn't appear to have had any plastic surgery or other cosmetic procedures, like Botox or collagen injections. That's very rare for a celebrity nowadays.

Saw Heather Locklear in a TV movie the other night.

Now, that was scary.

lol

Have a great weekend, Kitty!

I think the second photo is not very flattering to her, she does look better than that. I admire women (and men)who grow old gracefully and with dignity. They have character in their faces rather than looking bland and slightly weird. bigeyes

KittyliciousZaphira Saturday, June 11, 2011 12:43:32 PM

@ Wolf ~ You shouldn't be surprised at all. bigsmile

@ Star ~ I looked up Heather Locklear to see what you meant. smile
She'll be 50 years old in September this year.
This is what we think she looks like:

And here she is without makeup:

Thanks for the nice wishes. You too! heart

@ Freya ~ I didn't put up the second photo to flatter her, but to show how skinny she actually was. smile
I agree about the ageing with dignity though - botox faces do get to look weird when people get older. left

Freya RedFreya Saturday, June 11, 2011 3:42:43 PM

Twiggy is still attractive enough to be a "face" of Marks and Spencer, appearing their adverts. smile

r♡serose-marie Saturday, June 11, 2011 5:28:21 PM

I wouldn't exactly call that "minor retouching"... left
Although I despise the fashion industry's goal to make women look like young boys shape-wise, I have always liked Twiggy's looks from the neck up.

KittyliciousZaphira Saturday, June 11, 2011 6:23:48 PM

@ Freya ~ If you pause the ad and take a look at her, you'll see she's 'retouched' there too! I'm not saying she's not attractive. I just find it ridiculous that a 60 year old isn't allowed to look like a 60 year old. smile

@ Rose ~ When I look at pics from when she became a model, I think she's too boy-ish for my likings. But now, yes, me too. smile

That is what bothers me. She looks great for her age, and they're always retouching what doesn't fucking need it to create a standard nobody can live up to.

KittyliciousZaphira Monday, June 13, 2011 5:30:35 AM

I agree.

And to be honest, I actually like her looks better now, where she looks as if she's actually eating, than what she looked when she was discovered as a model.

She's prettier without the plaster coating! love.

The trouble is that, as Kimmie and others have said all along - overly shined up (but current) marketing and modelling shots don't do actors & actresses (or anyone) any favours in the long run, because when (lots of) people see the candid real life, non-airbrushed etc. pics, they act all surprised, and "ewww" and stuff. Heather Locklear (while *never* my cup of tea) looks relatively normal for a 50-odd year old woman....and the 2nd pic isn't at all flattering, but - yeah - she looks 'normal', i m o smile If it wasn't Heather Locklear, no one would look twice. In the first pic, with the bronze, the slap, the trick photography etc., she just looks a bit weird, in my opinion smile

KittyliciousZaphira Wednesday, June 29, 2011 4:48:07 AM

What I don't understand is that why it's not allowed to grow older. And I don't mean age-wise, but look-wise. I don't understand it. I don't think it's natural for us to look like 20-year-olds for our entire adulthood!

Just sayin'!

Skinny and proud writes: Im work as a model. (nothing even NEAR twiggy, she's one of the best of all-time) however, I weigh the same thing. In fact, twiggy was slightly more heavy than I am. Do I have an eating-disorder? No. I can eat whatever I want, and I DO IT. Yes, Im slightly skinnier than many models are allowed to be, but I make it work apparently and I think I look damn fine. And I have to be honest, I dont care about how I make other women feel - because Im just being me and loving it. If I suddenly felt an urge to gain weight, it would be because of those women (some of you commented on this post) that just cant handle it and absolutely have to bring skinny women down. Now THAT would be an eating-disorder.

Which of the commenters are you referring to, anonymous?? And which comments do you see as specifically presented in order to bring skinny women down?? :intrigued: smile

Mad Scientistqlue Wednesday, September 21, 2011 1:01:17 AM

I'm actually surprised that comment was made on this post and not the many posts that Kitty's made on eating disorders specifically! rolleyes.

FlaRin Wednesday, September 21, 2011 4:22:45 AM

..and considering the shape that the women who contribute here are in (slim, fit, healthy, young, intelligent, not threatened by skinny chicks or anyone else *at all*, either intellectually or physically) lol

Unregistered user Wednesday, September 21, 2011 7:36:35 AM

skinny and proud writes: I posted it here, because Im also a model. And I have not red her entire blog, at all (only this post). Kittylicious for example, accuses Twiggy of making young women sick, to be like her. No, THEY made themselves sick, because they did not like the way they looked to begin with. Not twiggys fault, its their own fault. It is so damn insulting that skinny women are seen by other women, as bitches who wants to do harm. God forbid, I told a heavy woman to stop eating, but it is perfectly okay for her, to tell me to eat. Be proud of yourself instead of this.

Skinny and proud writes: Flarin - Then I guess we must be reading different comments ;)

FlaRin Wednesday, September 21, 2011 8:38:36 AM

Yeah - ok - just for the sake of argument - you're obviously skinny by nature. Aren't you presenting this skinniness as an ideal to a shitload of young women who are *not* skinny by nature, and isn't your business entirely presenting clothes etc. in a manner that says 'look like this, or you're unfashionable and fat. Look like me or feel like you aren't allowed to wear the cool clothes I'm modelling for you'...in essence. What say you?? smile

\\edit : girls - anyone - please feel free to step in and wipe me out if necessary - I don't mind being put right about stuff.....

Skinny and Proud writes: No Im not. Im being who I am. My dream was to be a model and thats what I am. How other women percieve this, is non of my business. Why should I change because some women dont have the confidence to love themselves? Thats bull. And no, the close I pose in, is actually buyable in multiple sizes. Besides, if what youre saying is true, then +size models should not be praised like they do, because thats not healthy either. The problem is, that women thinks that being skinny is the ONLY right way to look - again, non of my business.

Unregistered user Wednesday, September 21, 2011 9:54:44 AM

Skinny and Proud writes: And no, my work is not intirely about clothes :) My work is also about art and beauty, having the gut to show who you are. Im not just a catalog model. I praise women, who loves themselves, skinny, fat, black, white, yellow, short, tall. It does not matter. Love yourselves ladies.

KittyliciousZaphira Wednesday, September 21, 2011 1:29:57 PM

Let me say right away: I have no intention of bringing anyone down, skinny or overweight.

I did write that a lot of women starved themselves because they wanted to look like Twiggy. And I still believe that.

OK, I understand your point, but I beg to differ. And perhaps you do too, because you also write:

Originally posted by anonymous:

So, if you chose to gain weight it's not because you wanted to to begin with, but because of overweight women...?

Look, it's cool that you're proud of how you look and all that. But fact is that fashion do have an impact on what people see as 'normal' and 'desirable'.

I don't see skinny women as bitches who wants to do others harm. I'm not even blaming those women. I do however blame fashion industry and magazine makers who try to make women believe that the only right thing is to be skinny.

Thanks for commenting, and also for returning to answer the comments. I appreciate it. up

Skinny and proud writes: First of all, waht I ment by gaining weight because of curvacious women, was to state the fact, that it goes both ways. Please dont think Im contradicting myself. But Im not reading in this post, that youre blaming the fashion industry, Im only that its Twiggys fault for some women being sick. And it kind of pisses me of a bit, because that i a horrable thing to accuse someone of. You are your own responsibilty and it is only up to you, how you want to look, feel or be like. I just think, that people who blame the fashion industry, other people, McDonalds ect. are people who just cant face the truth, that its their own choice. Nobody is forcing you to look at Twiggy, or me, or buy the clothes or order a big fat burger. And again, there is +size models everwhere today and dont forget Marilyn Monroe. Besides, you dont think all it takes to be a model, is to be skinny? Thats just wrong.

Unregistered user Wednesday, September 21, 2011 1:49:42 PM

Anonymous writes: Im sorry if Im misunderstanding your post. I really dont see that you are blaming anything else then Twiggy. Just looked around a bit, its a good blog. (despite this post, just my oppinion)

Hey! I'm overweight, unhealty, old and unfit. I do, however, think I'm intelligent and my mum always said I was cool.
Still - I'm pretty happy. bigsmile

Perhaps have another look?
When you say that it's up to "us" how we want to look - the point is that seeing skinny female models and very trained male ones, do have an impact on (especially) younger minds who think that that particular look is the norm.
There are tons of studies showing the result of that where both girls and boys contract eating disorders in order to try to be as skinny, start taking steroids in order to be buff, and other extremely unhealthy and dangerous methods to be like that.

And calling Marilyn Monroe a plus size model is a joke. She wasn't big.

Cobblers lol

Marilyn was Plus size *if* you consider skinny to be the standard. This is where the fashion industry has taken us, with skinny and otherwise models as it's tools and standard equipment - they don't have any free will regarding what they do and don't wear (do they???), they sell their souls for the money, like everyone else in sales & marketing. They're not artists, just coat hangers, basically.

If fashion swings around to focus on the ...errr...ummm...fuller figure, then skinnies will be out of a job for a while, probably.

And still, of course, frocks will be available in a range of sizes, just as they are now. But maybe a lot of teens & others won't be starving themselves to strive for an ideal they're not genetically designed to achieve.
