Twiggy

Some of you might remember that I bought a bunch of movies a couple of months ago. Among other stuff I bought the first series of Muppet Show. I watch an episode here and there, but since the show was first broadcasted in 1976 I don't know many of the actors that were on the show with the Muppets.
The other day I saw and episode with a girl whose name I recognized. That was Twiggy:
Twiggy's real name is Lesley Hornby, and she was born in 1949 in Neasden, London. She is an English model, actress, and singer. At 16, she became the first prominent British teenage model. She was known for her androgynous looks, large eyes, long eyelashes, extremely thin build, and short hair.
Fashion has not been the same since Twiggy first time was photographed by Barry Lategan. Her unique face with some incredibly large and fascinating eyes caught on.
She weighed only 41 kilos when she became a fashion icon. The designers flocked round the boy girl with the long, thin legs, and they started creating teenage clothes - something completely new in the 1960s, when pleated skirts with a length below the knee, blouses and twinsets pretty much had been "uniforms".
Here's Twiggy on The Muppet Show in 1976.
Twiggy has been in numerous films, for instance "The Blues Brothers" (1980) and "Body Bags" (1993), and she was one of the judges in America's Next Top Model from 2005 to 2007.
In the summer of 2009, beauty company Olay debuted its "Definity Eye Cream" campaign depicting Twiggy. Accusations of airbrushing created a stir with the media and public. A website campaign attracted 700 individual complaints. Procter & Gamble admitted to minor retouching and replaced the image.
Here's what made people react. The picture on the left is how she was shown in the ad, and the picture on the right is how she really looked.
No wonder that people reacted so strongly, but I'd still say she still looks pretty good for a 60 year old!

On a lighter note, Twiggy scares me

@ Kimmie ~ I agree with you. I think it was the devil that invented airbrushing!
Twiggy definitely made lots of young women starve themselves to be skinny like her.

You think people airbrush their pics and then decide they look good there so they go for some plastic surgery?

*is happy that Kitty got a set of action figures before they were removed*

Saw Heather Locklear in a TV movie the other night.
Now, that was scary.
Have a great weekend, Kitty!

@ Star ~ I looked up Heather Locklear to see what you meant.
She'll be 50 years old in September this year.
This is what we think she looks like:

And here she is without makeup:

Thanks for the nice wishes. You too!
@ Freya ~ I didn't put up the second photo to flatter her, but to show how skinny she actually was.
I agree about the ageing with dignity though - botox faces do get to look weird when people get older.

Although I despise the fashion industry's goal to make women look like young boys shape-wise, I have always liked Twiggy's looks from the neck up.

@ Rose ~ When I look at pics from when she became a model, I think she's too boy-ish for my likings. But now, yes, me too.

And to be honest, I actually like her looks better now, where she looks as if she's actually eating, than what she looked when she was discovered as a model.

I did write that a lot of women starved themselves because they wanted to look like Twiggy. And I still believe that.

OK, I understand your point, but I beg to differ. And perhaps you do too, because you also write:

Look, it's cool that you're proud of how you look and all that. But fact is that fashion do have an impact on what people see as 'normal' and 'desirable'.
I don't see skinny women as bitches who wants to do others harm. I'm not even blaming those women. I do however blame fashion industry and magazine makers who try to make women believe that the only right thing is to be skinny.
Thanks for commenting, and also for returning to answer the comments. I appreciate it.

Perhaps have another look? When you say that it's up to "us" how we want to look - the point is that seeing skinny female models and very trained male ones, do have an impact on (especially) younger minds who think that that particular look is the norm.
There are tons of studies showing the result of that where both girls and boys contract eating disorders in order to try to be as skinny, start taking steroids in order to be buff, and other extremely unhealthy and dangerous methods to be like that.
And calling Marilyn Monroe a plus size model is a joke. She wasn't big.

They're not artists, just coat hangers, basically.
If fashion swings around to focus on the ...errr...ummm...fuller figure, then skinnies will be out of a job for a while, probably.
And still, of course, frocks will be available in a range of sizes, just as they are now. But maybe a lot of teens & others won't be starving themselves to strive for an ideal they're not genetically designed to achieve.
