Facebook and other social networks

Facebook. The social network that just seems to grow bigger and bigger each day. There are people who ask me if I'm on Facebook and when I say 'no' they look at me as if I'm from outer space.
I know what it's like on Facebook, and believe me, I don't think I am missing a thing by not being there. I'm actually glad that people from my past can't find me there.

I mean - I don't give a fuck about the people from my past. There's a reason that they're not in my life any more, you know?

There is also the collecting of friends that's going on there and on other social networks. It's spreading. You're not cool if you've only got a few friends. You need at least a hundred to be really cool - and I don't get it. Why would you want to be friend with someone, who is a friend of yours that you don't even like much?

I can see that some of the social networks are beginning to look like each other, and some of the behaviour that's going on there is spreading too.

Let me tell you right away - I'm glad that there isn't a 'like'-button on MyOpera. That's just lazy. It's like an 'I've noticed you've written something'-button. And hey - it's perfectly fine to not comment on everything. I don't do that either. And please know that I think that the smiley only-comment equals the 'like'-button on Facebook.

So I want the MyOpera team to promise me, that if they ever add a 'like'-button, it'll be accompanied by a couple of other buttons...

As I have FOUR HUNDRED friends "not that I'm bragging" that makes me better than other people who are only capable of having smaller amounts of but more fulfilling and meaningful relationships, and those who are only able to name all of their friends just by looking at a photograph of them. These people should all be jealous of me and my FOUR HUNDRED friends "not that I'm bragging", and should wonder why they haven't thought to include all the people who currently work at and go to school at places I go to even if I don't know them. You see just like real life, of which I am a master despite spending all my time on the web, simply calling someone your friend makes them a close confident even if they've never even heard of you. So be my FOUR HUNDREDth friend, kitten, "not that I'm bragging" and you'll get so much out of it.

Yeah. I have facebook, does nothing of use for me really, is a waste of valuable time that I'd rather spend here, if I'm going to be online at all. I check in a couple of times a week to see if my friend or my daughter have beeped me there (they almost never do haha), but otherwise it's a very shallow pool.

I've left it a couple of times, but it does allow me to keep abreast of what my bro is doing in London. And my best friends from school, who live in Ireland in America. So, I kinda hate it, and I hate the philosophy of the company, but it does serve a function.

I use facebook entirely as a way to keep up with what my friends are doing and where they are. My facebook friends are mostly people I know, and most of them are actually peoiple I see in a daily basis, but facebook serves a function to us. If somebody needs a little help painting her living room, she'd put up an update saying: 'By the way, I am painting my living room tomorrow. Could use some help', or if you have four dining room chairs and don't know what to do with them (like me), I'd put up a picture and a price. Networking as networking is supposed to work.

That, and to say silly stuff that make people LOL or ROFL. Much like I do here. That is why I was born. To make people feel better.

I joined facebook to be able to see photos and videos of my grandkids, who live a five-hour drive away from me. After joining, I discovered pages of other relatives I hadn't been in contact with for twenty years or more, when they requested to be friends. It's been a good way to reconnect with family.

Other than that, it's pretty much useless.

I much prefer MyOpera.

@ Star ~ Well, keeping up with family is a good thing, but getting contacted from people you went to school with, and that you didn't like back then, and probably still don't like - that's just useless.

I`m not on Facebook or Twitter.To be really cool, you have to be on one nobody has heard of, with about two other people, very select but a bit boring. A real problem if you reject both of them as friends or they reject you.

Latest fab on facebook seems to be the socalled 'groups'. You can create a group and then just sign your friends in, without them knowing it. Shortly after millions of updates will show up on your friends' profile concerning stuff that your friends may not be interested in. Your friends would have to go to the group's page and remove themselves from the member's list. Just ignoring the continuing updates from the group will not do it.

The facebook people really do what they can to annoy people.

just counted. i have 12 friends on FB. i really only talk to 2 of them regularly. incidently, i met them both here on opera first. i have 20 friends on opera. i try much harder to keep up with my friends here as they are more important to me.

Personally, I think the friend collecting is far worse here on MyO than over at Fb.
The like button is really just a +1 visual, but the STFU is a good idea!

What I don't get is people who like their own statuses/comments...

I think the friend collecting is worse here because lots of people have their Facebook account privatized and that doesn't make as much sense here, really.

I don't think many have their profiles private, as nobody at all would be able to find them then, but it's a valid point. I think many people use it in the keeping-in-touch-and-keeping-updated form, but there are assholes and friend collectors everywhere I suppose.

I did away with the 'like' button on my FB page. I switched to pirate english. Now i have an 'Arr' button and i get to skewer ya instead of poke you. Though i did rather enjoy poking Umi on a daily basis.

We know that last year, Facebook paid a billion dollars to own Instagram, right? Does anyone read the 'terms and conditions'? As from Jan. 16th 2013, Instagram's T&C will include the following statement :

"You hereby grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the content that you post on or through the service.
and continues with...
You agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos, and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you."
