333 movies you have to see before you die

Blockbuster decided to ask their costumers which movies they thought were good enough to enter a list over the best movies ever. The only criteria was, that the movie should be at least five years old, because it takes a bit of time before you can call a movie a classic.
Here's the movies that came in as number 1 to 10:
1. Lord of the Rings 1 - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
2. Shawshank Redemption (1994)
3. The Godfather (1972)
4. Pulp Fiction (1994)
5. Gladiator (2000)
6. The Matrix (1999)
7. Braveheart (1995)
8. Lord of the Rings 2 - The two towers (2002)
9. Lord of the Rings 3 - The Return of the King (2003)
10. Dirty Dancing (1987)
I have actually seen all of those ten movies, and I think I would rank them differently, but that's probably just me. Shawshank Redemption is a bloody good movie, and I really enjoyed the Gladiator too!
A quick glance over the rest of the list reveals other good movies, such as Master & Commander (2003), Der Untergang (2004), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), The Sixth Sense (1999) and The Green Mile (1999).
Older movies on the list are for instance: The Color Purple (1985), The Terminator (1984), The Warriors (1979), One Flew over the cuckoo's nest (1975) and Gone with the Wind (1939).

I think Master and Commander is excellent, far better than Braveheart (I stress, only in my opinion)
Other movies on my list for sure would be Wings of Desire (Wenders), The Big Lebowski, Paris Texas and (call me old fashioned if you like...) Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid.
Do you think Video Easy's customers would have come up with a different top 10??

Not a single Mad Max film when The Road Warrior is one of the best action movies ever. Die Hard for sheer enduringness and the fact that it made action movies plausible again after they were filled with muscle men who were obviously going to win for so many years. Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club because despite screaming 80s they're still some of the most fun you can see on a screen. The Ring is one of the creepiest movies ever with one of the best ghost stories and greatest shocks. Oldboy is a masterpiece in film making in every single way and really twists the expectations of the watcher. Terminator, which is so good that it manages to convince the world that a supercomputer from the future would create a guy with an Austrian accent to blend into middle America while looking for someone. It's ~A wonderful Life is as relevant today as it was when it was released and still one of the best feel-good films out there. GHOSTBUSTERS!!! Nuff said, doesn't need a reason beyond the fact that it's Ghostbusters.
The list doesn't load for me. I think it may be country locked. Can't find the UK version either.

@ Flarin ~ I really liked Master and Commander, and Braveheart didn't leave quite the same good impression. The Green Mile would be on my own personal top 10.
@ Kimmie ~ I'm not surprised.
@ Mik ~ I really like the Die Hard series! And Breakfast Club too, but that's for other reasons.
Perhaps this link works better?
@ Aidia ~ My personal opinion is that LOTR 2 was way too long and had way too little Legolas in it!

Saw the list in the newspaper the other day and was surprised that I almost read the whole thing through before I found a film I hadn't seen. And still, my favourites were not on it at all.
I must have seen a shitload of films over the years.
For the record: I would not be able to select a favourite, but Terminator Judgement Day is way up there. I believe this is the one film that I have seen most times. I simply love it. It would not be my choice of favourite, though. The fact that I have seen it five million times doesn't make it my favourite. Hayao Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro is a really great film, and in my opinion way better than Terminator II, but I would not just put in on for fun, and have only seen it about ten times. That film is for special occasions, special moods, if you know what I mean.
KittyliciousZaphira # Friday, August 26, 2011 4:48:22 PM
@ Lion ~ I don't wanna see Legolas running. I'd much rather see him staying!
I know what you mean about moods - that's why it's nice to have a selection of movies to chose between. I enjoyed the Terminator too!

Oh well, at least the Warriors and Jaws made it.

Jaws - I never understood why the shark was growling!
@ Gavin ~ Yeah well... I haven't seen it, so there...

I can't seem to remember that.
If there WAS some growling, maybe it was his stomach cuz he was hungry.
Out of the Top 10, the only ones I've seen are:
Pulp Fiction
The Matrix
Dirty Dancing

And "Rocky."

I'd probably add either 'Heat' or 'Goodfellas' to my list - 'Bend it like Beckham' (if only because all the streets in that movie are the actual streets I played in as a kid)....and there's a movie from 1960 called 'School for Scoundrels' that would definitely be there, and maybe another called 'Wrong Arm Of The Law'. I *love* Ealing Comedies
Mad Scientistqlue # Sunday, August 28, 2011 10:13:07 AM
Where's E.T. ?
People are so quick to dismiss that movie and yet it turned the whole 'aliens are monsters' paradigm upside down.
And I agree with Mik! -Ghostbusters- 'nuf said.

My Top Twenty
Already mentioned some of my choices in a previous comment but Tokyo Godfathers so needs to be on the top twenty. Heat and Goodfellas are good calls though I personally think Heat has the edge there as no other film has had two actors of such experience that they can pull off making a cup of coffee the most memorable and atmospheric part of the film and still call it an action movie. The original Rocky, A Knights Tale and Donnie Darko need to be in my top twenty too for very different reasons. The Warriors because it's still such an enjoyable film. The entire Back To The Future trilogy as one film because it's one of the few trilogies that can be watched that way and the most overlooked in things like this despite how wonderful it is. North By Northwest and Rear Window for still being great and identifiable stories after all this time, and brilliantly shot for their time. Dead Poets Society for being one of the few films to ever choke me up (that's full on crying, for men) repeatedly and we may as well add in Field of Dreams for that same reason. School For Scoundrels is actually on my list too, as it still holds up today and is so very funny.

Please feel free to make a top 10/top 20 over the movies you like. I've cheated a bit, so my list has already been published.
It's here in case you want to see it.

Assuming this is a genuine death list and you will die, if you see them all, and 'Never Say Never' would be the last one, it adds so much more horror and terror to the situation that it almosts surpasses the boundaries of perception. The obsession of wanting to see that final movie so bad combined with the repulsion towards Justin Bieber and the fear of dying, your common sense telling you to stay away from cinemas, television and Blockbuster can only amount to madness. It surely is a horror film setup, man.
So, if your phone rings and you hear Justin Bierber's voice ask 'What's your favourite scary movie?', you go to the doctor at once and don't leave him until he commits you...

Thanks, Martin. I agree with your assessment of the Rambo flick. Much prefer "Rocky." I went to see "Rocky" in the theater when it was first released. Went by myself. Got grounded by my mom for a month.
Totally worth it.

I struggled with Gladiator, to have in my top 10 - but eventually removed it - that was the only one of the ones in the 'post top 10' that came within a mile, I must admit. I like Shawshank, but if I don't ever see it again I won't worry. There are a lot of movies I would miss *a lot* more, and that's how I based my list - kinda 'desert island discs' for movies

I think I'd have "Heat" in my top list, as well as "The Godfather" and "Der Untergang". I loved "Das leben der anderen" also. A movie that brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat.
And I can't help laughing when I see "Clockwise".
