333 movies you have to see before you die

,

Blockbuster decided to ask their costumers which movies they thought were good enough to enter a list over the best movies ever. The only criteria was, that the movie should be at least five years old, because it takes a bit of time before you can call a movie a classic.

Here's the movies that came in as number 1 to 10:

1. Lord of the Rings 1 - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
2. Shawshank Redemption (1994)
3. The Godfather (1972)
4. Pulp Fiction (1994)
5. Gladiator (2000)
6. The Matrix (1999)
7. Braveheart (1995)
8. Lord of the Rings 2 - The two towers (2002)
9. Lord of the Rings 3 - The Return of the King (2003)
10. Dirty Dancing (1987)

I have actually seen all of those ten movies, and I think I would rank them differently, but that's probably just me. Shawshank Redemption is a bloody good movie, and I really enjoyed the Gladiator too!

A quick glance over the rest of the list reveals other good movies, such as Master & Commander (2003), Der Untergang (2004), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), The Sixth Sense (1999) and The Green Mile (1999).

Older movies on the list are for instance: The Color Purple (1985), The Terminator (1984), The Warriors (1979), One Flew over the cuckoo's nest (1975) and Gone with the Wind (1939).

See the entire list here.

Big and scary!Just because!

All 3 Lord Of The Rings movies? They didn't leave much of an impression on me, but then maybe I knew the book too well.

FlaRin Friday, August 26, 2011 7:23:35 AM

My top 10 would possibly, maybe include Shawshank, but none of the others on that top 10 list. I would[/i] include O Brother for sure. I've seen them all too, except Dirty Dancing (or I don't remember it anyway) and Der Untergang. Don't remember The Warriors either smile

I think Master and Commander is excellent, far better than Braveheart (I stress, only in my opinion) smile

Other movies on my list for sure would be Wings of Desire (Wenders), The Big Lebowski, Paris Texas and (call me old fashioned if you like...) Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid.

Do you think Video Easy's customers would have come up with a different top 10?? smile

Spaggyj Friday, August 26, 2011 9:55:15 AM

I don't agree with that top ten at all lol

Dark FurieFurie Friday, August 26, 2011 1:49:42 PM

Lord of the Rings beats The Shawshank Redemption? bigeyes I want the names and addresses of everyone who voted... mad So many films deserve to be on that top ten but aren't and so many recently popular films have made their way on because customers haven't seen true classics.

Not a single Mad Max film when The Road Warrior is one of the best action movies ever. Die Hard for sheer enduringness and the fact that it made action movies plausible again after they were filled with muscle men who were obviously going to win for so many years. Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club because despite screaming 80s they're still some of the most fun you can see on a screen. The Ring is one of the creepiest movies ever with one of the best ghost stories and greatest shocks. Oldboy is a masterpiece in film making in every single way and really twists the expectations of the watcher. Terminator, which is so good that it manages to convince the world that a supercomputer from the future would create a guy with an Austrian accent to blend into middle America while looking for someone. It's ~A wonderful Life is as relevant today as it was when it was released and still one of the best feel-good films out there. GHOSTBUSTERS!!! Nuff said, doesn't need a reason beyond the fact that it's Ghostbusters.

The list doesn't load for me. I think it may be country locked. Can't find the UK version either. awww

Aidialigan0510 Friday, August 26, 2011 1:57:54 PM

Lord of the Ring 1- 3 are the best. up

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, August 26, 2011 3:10:48 PM

@ Mart ~ I haven't read either of the books. I started on the first one, and read about 15 pages before I decided that I didn't want to finish it. smile

@ Flarin ~ I really liked Master and Commander, and Braveheart didn't leave quite the same good impression. The Green Mile would be on my own personal top 10. up

@ Kimmie ~ I'm not surprised. wink It's actually quite hard to make a top ten, imo. Which movie is your favourite?

@ Mik ~ I really like the Die Hard series! And Breakfast Club too, but that's for other reasons. wink
Perhaps this link works better?

@ Aidia ~ My personal opinion is that LOTR 2 was way too long and had way too little Legolas in it! p

Aidialigan0510 Friday, August 26, 2011 3:20:47 PM

lol Ho ho ho Kitty loves Legolas!!! ME TOO, ME TOO bigsmile

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, August 26, 2011 4:04:17 PM

Yeah, he's so cute! love

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Friday, August 26, 2011 4:09:02 PM

No 2001? Ha. Useless list.

Martin K™Aqualion Friday, August 26, 2011 4:20:13 PM

Legolas runs like a girl.

Saw the list in the newspaper the other day and was surprised that I almost read the whole thing through before I found a film I hadn't seen. And still, my favourites were not on it at all.

I must have seen a shitload of films over the years.

For the record: I would not be able to select a favourite, but Terminator Judgement Day is way up there. I believe this is the one film that I have seen most times. I simply love it. It would not be my choice of favourite, though. The fact that I have seen it five million times doesn't make it my favourite. Hayao Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro is a really great film, and in my opinion way better than Terminator II, but I would not just put in on for fun, and have only seen it about ten times. That film is for special occasions, special moods, if you know what I mean.

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, August 26, 2011 4:48:22 PM

@ Gavin ~ It's probably further down the list!

@ Lion ~ I don't wanna see Legolas running. I'd much rather see him staying! wink

I know what you mean about moods - that's why it's nice to have a selection of movies to chose between. I enjoyed the Terminator too!

Suntana Friday, August 26, 2011 5:29:10 PM

WwwwWHAT? The Sound of Music, Amadeus and Singing in the Rain make it ... and no Chuck Norris movies make it? bomb furious mad

Oh well, at least the Warriors and Jaws made it. headbang

Scandalous.

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, August 26, 2011 6:55:33 PM

@ Sunny ~ Singing in the rain ... sounds like a *very* old movie! bigeyes
Jaws - I never understood why the shark was growling! lol

@ Gavin ~ Yeah well... I haven't seen it, so there... p

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Friday, August 26, 2011 7:07:27 PM

I haven't seen Shawshank, so there.

p

Suntana Friday, August 26, 2011 7:33:11 PM

Really? The Jaws shark was growling? bigeyes
I can't seem to remember that.
If there WAS some growling, maybe it was his stomach cuz he was hungry. lol

Out of the Top 10, the only ones I've seen are:
Pulp Fiction
The Matrix
Dirty Dancing

Stardancer Friday, August 26, 2011 7:42:43 PM

Wasn't able to see the list with the link you provided, Kitty. Was "Schindler's List" on it? One of the best films I've ever seen, I guess.

And "Rocky."

bigsmile

I reckon I have seen most of them, watched Leon again the other day, great film, surprised its only on page 3

Aidialigan0510 Saturday, August 27, 2011 12:44:00 AM

How bout James Bond 007? Thomas Crown Affair and Charlie's Angel? bigsmile

Spaggyj Saturday, August 27, 2011 1:07:53 AM

I don't have a favourite. I have a few favourites, but they tend to be hard to reel off on the spot. I guess they're going for what got a lot of bums in seats for this list, but I dunno.

Cleanclean Saturday, August 27, 2011 3:49:34 AM

There was a very good drama called After the Truth (Nichts als die Wahrheit) from 1999 in which Josef Mengele was found to be still alive in modern times and put on trial. The story kind of focused on the guy who had the unenviable position of defending him (as required by law, of course). Haunting subject matter, but excellent acting.

Freya RedFreya Sunday, August 28, 2011 1:22:38 AM

Some of the movies in the list and mentioned in comments, I have never seen, but I liked the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Gladiator, The Matrix, Master and Commander, Schindler`s List and Alien. The advantage of satellite TV is you can see the `classics` you have never seen before. For example Jaws was recently on. What about the Bourne trilogy ? Hotel Rwanda ? Animated movies like Toy Story can they be included ? Don`t forget Harry Potter p lol

For Legolas fans.lovep lol

FlaRin Sunday, August 28, 2011 2:10:21 AM

lol <wisely steps back, not wanting to get in the way...>lol

I'd probably add either 'Heat' or 'Goodfellas' to my list - 'Bend it like Beckham' (if only because all the streets in that movie are the actual streets I played in as a kid)....and there's a movie from 1960 called 'School for Scoundrels' that would definitely be there, and maybe another called 'Wrong Arm Of The Law'. I *love* Ealing Comedies smile I doubt they'd ever have made it to Danmark though.

Mad Scientistqlue Sunday, August 28, 2011 10:13:07 AM

Shawshank Redemption is so far above the other movies on that 'top ten' list that it needs a new list of it's own. left.
Where's E.T. ? left.
People are so quick to dismiss that movie and yet it turned the whole 'aliens are monsters' paradigm upside down.
And I agree with Mik! -Ghostbusters- 'nuf said. party.

Suntana Sunday, August 28, 2011 2:37:22 PM

I believe E. T. IS in there somewhere.

Cheers Kitten. Any film list where Blade Runner is beaten by Dirty Dancing needs to re-examine its priorities. I'm surprised that Memento is so far down the list as well, as that is a masterclass of scripting and editing.

My Top Twenty
Already mentioned some of my choices in a previous comment but Tokyo Godfathers so needs to be on the top twenty. Heat and Goodfellas are good calls though I personally think Heat has the edge there as no other film has had two actors of such experience that they can pull off making a cup of coffee the most memorable and atmospheric part of the film and still call it an action movie. The original Rocky, A Knights Tale and Donnie Darko need to be in my top twenty too for very different reasons. The Warriors because it's still such an enjoyable film. The entire Back To The Future trilogy as one film because it's one of the few trilogies that can be watched that way and the most overlooked in things like this despite how wonderful it is. North By Northwest and Rear Window for still being great and identifiable stories after all this time, and brilliantly shot for their time. Dead Poets Society for being one of the few films to ever choke me up (that's full on crying, for men) repeatedly and we may as well add in Field of Dreams for that same reason. School For Scoundrels is actually on my list too, as it still holds up today and is so very funny.

Hotel Rwanda?

Hotel Rwanda is one of the most important movies of our time, yet I'm loathe to put it in a top ten list for the same reason as Schindler's List - the issue tends to overtake the film making and you find people who didn't enjoy the film branded as haters.

After the Truth

They had that on the Xbox Live movie rental service and mixed up the trailer with a clip from Wall Street. It fit with the film description.

FlaRin Monday, August 29, 2011 4:00:57 AM

School Of Rock, Sir Henry At Rawlinson End, Withnail & I and High Fidelity also making it into my top list of 20. Why don't we do that - make a top 20 of our essential movies, and post them here?? That would be cool and very interesting, I think (and probably quite hard to do, with all honesty). How about it?? smile

That OK with you, Pussy Cat?? smile

KittyliciousZaphira Monday, August 29, 2011 4:54:45 AM

I think it's interesting to see what people chose as their favourite movies, so thanks for your comments everybody. happy

Please feel free to make a top 10/top 20 over the movies you like. I've cheated a bit, so my list has already been published. bigsmile
It's here in case you want to see it. up

Martin K™Aqualion Monday, August 29, 2011 8:33:29 AM

So, what if you find you've seen every movie on the list? Or, even worse, what if you find you've seen them all, except one, and in the days after you can't help thinking about this film? Every time you walk pass the cinema, you think of that film, every time you pass a Blockbuster, it pops up. It's like you can't get it off your mind, and it starts to scare you, because it is growing into some uncontrollable urge. And just as you realize you're obsessed you turn on the television, and the presentor's voice says...

Yeah, I know... I've seen to many scary movies.

The Justin Bieber biography? p

Martin K™Aqualion Monday, August 29, 2011 1:45:55 PM

OMG, Mik!

Assuming this is a genuine death list and you will die, if you see them all, and 'Never Say Never' would be the last one, it adds so much more horror and terror to the situation that it almosts surpasses the boundaries of perception. The obsession of wanting to see that final movie so bad combined with the repulsion towards Justin Bieber and the fear of dying, your common sense telling you to stay away from cinemas, television and Blockbuster can only amount to madness. It surely is a horror film setup, man.

So, if your phone rings and you hear Justin Bierber's voice ask 'What's your favourite scary movie?', you go to the doctor at once and don't leave him until he commits you...

Bad WolfCois Monday, August 29, 2011 6:22:59 PM

i actually watched Shawshank Redemption a few nights ago again after a long while and it's still as good as when I first saw it. up

Stardancer Monday, August 29, 2011 8:30:05 PM

Oh, man, FlaRin. "Heat" is just an awesome movie. DeNiro and Pacino in the same movie?! How cool can you get?

yes

Thanks, Martin. I agree with your assessment of the Rambo flick. Much prefer "Rocky." I went to see "Rocky" in the theater when it was first released. Went by myself. Got grounded by my mom for a month.

Totally worth it.

I'm glad I never got grounded for watching a movie all by myself! yes

Martin K™Aqualion Tuesday, August 30, 2011 2:44:09 PM

When I was a kid there was no such thing as grounding. It was something we saw in American children's programmes. I don't think the concept exists at all in Denmark.

KittyliciousZaphira Tuesday, August 30, 2011 3:32:35 PM

Perhaps that's why I never tried it then. I have tried having to be home much earlier than all my friends though. I think we all believed that the others were allowed to be out much longer. bigsmile

FlaRin Monday, September 5, 2011 4:19:28 AM

There's a Leonard O'DiCaprio movie that might make it into my top 20 - 'Body of Lies' - possibly my favourite of his movies, along with 'The Beach' smile

(still working on a serious top 20 list b t w - but it's not easy)

DHdarkesthour Monday, September 5, 2011 7:39:14 AM

Possibly off topic here but I watched Paul last night, it was a real funny film. Give it a go yes

FlaRin Monday, September 5, 2011 8:49:26 AM

That's the Hot Fuzz crew, isn't it? I'll look out for it up

FlaRin Monday, September 5, 2011 11:36:35 PM

B T W - I've managed to get down to 22 in my top 20 list, but I just can't for the life of me decide which 2 to cut out, to finish it off....

(and none of the top 10 shown at the top of this post even got in the running at stage 1, selecting from maybe the top 50, which surprised me a little smile )

KittyliciousZaphira Tuesday, September 6, 2011 5:52:49 PM

Hmm... it's not easy to cut some of them out. I have only ever worked on a top ten, but I have a feeling it would be different today, even though some of them would definitely make it to the list again. smile

FlaRin Tuesday, September 6, 2011 9:47:46 PM

Oh absolutely!! I started my own group once (in the early Flamingo Rinse days) for people to post their top 20 (or was it 50?) movies - and my list then was totally different to my list now - well...maybe 60% or 70% different, which is quite a lot smile

I struggled with Gladiator, to have in my top 10 - but eventually removed it - that was the only one of the ones in the 'post top 10' that came within a mile, I must admit. I like Shawshank, but if I don't ever see it again I won't worry. There are a lot of movies I would miss *a lot* more, and that's how I based my list - kinda 'desert island discs' for movies smile

KittyliciousZaphira Wednesday, September 7, 2011 5:07:03 PM

That's why "Rocky Horror Picture Show" will have to stay on my list, as well as "Little Shop of Horrors". There are no movies that I've seen as many times as I have seen them, and that must indicate that they belong on the list. yes

FlaRin Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:22:38 PM

I have a couple in my top 20 that you might find a bit boring - but on the other hand, you're a movie freak like me, aren't you, so it's quite possible that you'd enjoy them for the same reasons that I do.... smile

r♡serose-marie Saturday, September 10, 2011 4:57:08 PM

Shawshank Redemption is an excellent movie and another proof that Stephen King novels often turn out better as movies.
I think I'd have "Heat" in my top list, as well as "The Godfather" and "Der Untergang". I loved "Das leben der anderen" also. A movie that brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat.
And I can't help laughing when I see "Clockwise". o

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Monday, September 12, 2011 6:33:56 PM

Der Undergang was amazing, and brave.
