Homosexuals, eh? I never really understood that expression. And by the look of it, I'm not the only one feeling like that:

It's good that the word 'closet' has come into use - the term 'Wardrobe' doesn't sound anywhere near as..err....user friendly, does it lol

Mind you, 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe' might have taken on a completely different meaning.... smile

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (or Why I Stopped Shopping in IKEA).

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Saturday, September 3, 2011 10:58:00 AM

So that's what they're for. At last, I'll be able to walk around my apartment.

Were you the guy I leapt out onto while dressed as Simba?

Martin K™Aqualion Saturday, September 3, 2011 4:18:01 PM

I have no idea, Mik. Every time my wife pursuades me to go to IKEA with her I get this dimensional warp feeling. Our local IKEA is Narnia-sized, and you have to walk through the entire building to get out.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Monday, September 5, 2011 2:42:35 AM

lol, Lu has posted a ton of these on my Facebook wall, they rock!

KittyliciousZaphira Monday, September 5, 2011 8:00:03 PM

A ton of what? confused

FlaRin Monday, September 5, 2011 9:20:07 PM

A ton of rocks, maybe - you could probably fit that into a decently sized wardrobe... smile

Martin K™Aqualion Tuesday, September 6, 2011 9:35:02 AM

By the way, we all remember what happened last time Mik slipped into that Simba suit, don't we?

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Tuesday, September 6, 2011 7:28:00 PM

The Spider-man memes.

Remember? Don't we have polaroids?

FlaRin Tuesday, September 6, 2011 10:02:30 PM

Who pronounces 'Meme' as "meem" (rhymes with 'dream'), and who pronounces it as "mem" (pronounced like the first part of 'memory')??

Is there a correct pronunciation, or are these two pronunciations interchangeable and acceptable to everyone\anyone?? :interested:

\\edit - I use either, so I don't know if one is preferred, or correct...

Mad Scientistqlue Tuesday, September 6, 2011 10:34:30 PM

I say 'meem'. I don't know he that's the authentic pronounciation though. i'll have to consult my Oxford sherlock

FlaRin Tuesday, September 6, 2011 10:46:05 PM

I like the idea of "meemee", but perhaps that's just me lol

Mad Scientistqlue Tuesday, September 6, 2011 10:58:02 PM

my Oxford Concise Dictionary doesn't list it. awww.

FlaRin Tuesday, September 6, 2011 11:05:54 PM

I'll call Richard Dawkins (a k a 'no god boyo' lol ) for his opinion right away. I think he invented the word, didn't he? Or started to use it anyway - it looks like ancient Greek to me....

der WandersmannderWandersmann Wednesday, September 7, 2011 4:06:13 AM

I think it has to have a little hat on the first e, thus: "même" ... my dictionary says "meem", but I think it's different in French.

FlaRin Wednesday, September 7, 2011 4:12:35 AM

sing Mehmeh - how I luv ya how I luv ya, my dear old Mehmeh..sing

KittyliciousZaphira Saturday, September 10, 2011 5:54:12 AM

That video is just spot on! bigsmile And the part at the end where they get themselves into trouble for filming in Ikea almost made me choke on my milk! lol

Martin K™Aqualion Saturday, September 10, 2011 6:53:24 AM

Once I was in IKEA they had these bowls with small chocolates everywhere on account of some anniversary or something, nicely wrapped in blue and yellow. Now, there's usually a bunch of kids running around in there because of all the poor, suffering single moms that have to buy all their furniture in IKEA because they can't afford the real stuff. Result: marks from chocolate fingers everywhere. True story. That was not a particularly thought-through plan.

Mad Scientistqlue Saturday, September 10, 2011 10:01:49 AM

From the video, it kinda looks like a normal store. (like a GAME or an OK Furnishers) left.
And Martin, I haven't seen real furniture been sold anywhere in over twenty years. Does anyone still know how to make real furniture? awww

KittyliciousZaphira Saturday, September 10, 2011 3:26:07 PM

What I like about IKEA is that their stuff is so relatively cheap that it's affordable to get a new piece of furniture when you're tired of the old one. smile

der WandersmannderWandersmann Saturday, September 10, 2011 4:27:25 PM

I know how to make furniture, and I like doing it, but I no longer have access to a shop or my dear old tools, since I had to move into this place. Sigh!

badkitty1967 Saturday, September 10, 2011 5:48:49 PM

Wood working is one of my favorite hobbies. Unfortunately i'm living in an apartment and have no place for my tools or a shop. : (
That pressed board 'stuff' (i was going to say something else instead) usually falls apart before its a year old. So i buy good old furniture at resale and junk shops.up

r♡serose-marie Saturday, September 10, 2011 5:53:42 PM

HA! Love the sign. Although it could've included shoes wink

As for IKEA, I think they have gotten a lot better - both design wise and quality wise.

badkitty1967 Saturday, September 10, 2011 6:15:37 PM

He means solid wood. If you peel the veneer off your table you would see whats basically saw dust glued together and pressed into shape. down

Martin K™Aqualion Saturday, September 10, 2011 6:15:38 PM

As suggested there's quite a few IKEA-items in my appartment. Not as much furniture as different sorts of accessories, mostly lamps. Now, a lamp is a fairly simple comstruction, and what you pay for when you buy a lamp is the design. IKEA actually has some quite innovative designers, especially in the lamp department, but because these designers work under a common worldwide brand, the product becomes affordable for ordinary people like my wife and I. I guess this is what keeps IKEA's sails full.

badkitty1967 Saturday, September 10, 2011 6:27:18 PM

OMG! Don't Google 'IKEA' with your safe search off! Not unless you like BD/SM furniture. yikes scared

But it's still furniture according to my dictionary.

FlaRin Saturday, September 10, 2011 10:02:45 PM

Fibreboard, particle board and stuff like that can be made to be useful (although maybe less sturdy) furniture, and can look cool too. smile

It's one of the realities now that 'real' furniture is more expensive - and in many cases just because it's actual wood doesn't make it worth what's being asked for it.

My bookshelves are IKEA from London, bought in about '91 and they've been bloody good - especially as I can 'flat pack' them back down to move them (hence they came to NZ) - I'm not taking them with me to Scandinavia because I didn't want to, but I could have, easily - which might not have been quite the case with 'the real thing'. (they're *big*) smile

Mad Scientistqlue Saturday, September 10, 2011 11:35:44 PM

Try finding a wardrobe or kitchen cabinet that has doors which actually line up with each other! rolleyes.
Or see if you can find a bed with a real spring base! irked.
Even that modern artsy metal and glass furniture is usually just a cheap chrome plating over 2mm tin plate. (or tubing with 2mm tin walls)
And That's the "high quality" expensive stuff! scared. You don't even want to see the cheap stuff!!! faint.

Dark FurieFurie Sunday, September 11, 2011 3:37:55 AM

I have multiple kitchen cabinets less than a year old with doors that line up. My bed will never have a spring base as they're not built for certain activities from the more husky gentleman. wink

I actually hate furniture snobbery. Lets cut down some new trees and spend six times the price of other furniture. Why? Because the MDF stuff that used to be available was shite and we're judging current items more than a decade later as displaying the same lack of quality, despite advances in packing and gluing making them more sturdy and better manufacture making things easier to put together and more professional when finished. As Nick points out, just because things are made of "real wood" doesn't mean that they're put together any better or even can be. There are more bad manufacturers with highly sought materials than there are without access to those.

It's the same process as happens with food. We as a species like saying that all diet or microwave food is shite. That's just not true anymore and we're judging on how these things were years ago when they first showed up. Sure, some of it still tastes like cardboard because not everything is ever perfect, but these days you're very likely to find edible and even tasty microwave and diet options.

badkitty1967 Sunday, September 11, 2011 4:23:20 AM

@Mik Your absolutely correct.
But seeing as how i have nothing that was bought brand new (seriously). All my furniture has stood the test of time.
Actually, i do have a set of selves in my closet that were made by IKEA.
My living room selves are made of good quality plywood that i made myself.
I'm looking around my apartment and the few things that i have that were bought new were gifts. No, i'm not cheap. Just broke!

FlaRin Sunday, September 11, 2011 11:38:20 PM

I *am* cheap - but certainly not easy!! lol

To be honest I've seen a lot of 'furniture snobbery' here in NZ where people rave over tables etc. made out of old Kauri wood planks - sure the wood is old and solid, but even so - it's still old planks sawn up & turned into tables and then sold at 5 times the price of new 'real' furniture, because it's seen as cool to have a Kauri table. On the other hand, it's great to see the wood being recycled into useful and quite valuable artefacts.

It's reasonable to use all resources - I'm very keen on alternative use of stuff, and if we can make acceptable and attractive\functional furniture out of what is in effect sawdust, or wood chippings, then great - I'm all for it bigsmile

And I agree about sprung beds and the gentlemanly activities - slat beds are the way to go!! up

Ditto food. Completely agree about acceptable quality today, and if you buy shit, that's exactly what you're going to eat, no matter how you cook it smile Most stuff on the average supermarket shelf today is pretty good, and you almost always have the option to check fat\calorific content on the packaging before you buy, if you wish smile

They don't even use glue anymore! irked. A few tin staples is all they bother with! awww.

But based on your comment, I'd say you're living in a different world there in England to what we get here in South Africa! sherlock.
My bed/couch is a steel frame sleeper couch from China which I bought a few years back. I actually waited over a year for delivery because the original one was uplifted by the insurance company after the flooding!

It's a rare exception to the rule, but probably because it was imported! party.
Because it was uplifted as 'flood damaged', they tried to give me an 'alternative' product that cost more, looked crap and was basically made from spongeboard! (the stuff builders use in expansion gaps!)
If you don'y know what spongeboard is, it's similar to chipboard, but it's softer. (you can squeeze it between you fingers.)
At least 'MDF' (Medium Density Fibreboard) is solid. Most wardrobes etc. are made from chipboard with a printed paper veneer! (they dont even bother using Panelite anymore! irked)

Clearly Mik, the furniture they sell in England is not being made this way! up.

pssst. Just to emphasise, it's not the materials I'm complaining about, it really is the quality! 'Modern' furniture in South Africa is designed to fall apart within two years, no matter how well you look after it! irked.

FlaRin Monday, September 12, 2011 11:58:40 PM

Well. The bright side is that at least you've got an OK Rugby team smile

r♡serose-marie Wednesday, September 14, 2011 10:11:06 AM

*realises the attempt to spark a philosophical debate about real vs unreal furniture (I can actually touch my table even if it's unreal according to you!) is lost*
