Kitty's Corner

Johnny English II ~ Reborn

,

Johnny English has been banished from the British spy agency MI7 after having messed up his previous mission in Mozambique. He now lives with monks in a monastery, training Kung Fu and regaining both physical and mental strength. But Johnny is called back to England because a terror group, Vortex, has threatened to assassinate the Chinese prime minister. And then a very special adventure begins for our hero, trying to prevent the assassination and identify the high ranking members of the secret terror organisation.

It's not often I laugh my way through an entire movie, but the funny scenes in this film were definitely the laugh out loud type. At some point, after around an hour, I found myself a little bit "bored", you know, enough is enough, but that only lasted for a moment. Then Rowan Atkinson was back in good style with an excellent sense of humour.

Reborn relies more on visual gags than the first "Johnny English" movie did, and I really liked that, because that's one of the things that Rowan Aktinson does best.

If you like the trailer, you're going to love the movie!

If you're expecting a deep plot and clever dialogue, you've come to the wrong place. Expect funny scenes, a hilarious Rowan Atkinson and lots of English slapstick humour.

star star star star out of 6.

I enjoyed it too, and it was in fact better than I expected (although I liked the first one as well) smile There's a long sequence which cracked me up, where he hears the mantra that his Kung Fu teacher taught him, about using experience, and this carries him through a series of events as he chases a Bruce Lee type dude (who does the jumping & back-flipping over fences & across roof-tops etc.), which he manages with a very amusing calm manner. Most enjoyable up

Johnny English's side-kick is also very amusing, and plays the role perfectly smile

I'd give it 4/6 too, if asked, and I definitely want to see it again, and will certainly get the DVD when it gets in the shops (although I *never* pay full price for a DVD, I'll get it on special, or 2nd hand).

I must say I won't be seeing this. Slapstick just ain't my bag and Atkinson's got much more in him than this.

For me, Rowan Atkinson is at his best when turning a phrase into a scathing insult you kick yourself for not seeing coming. He may have hit international fame with Mr Bean and other slapstick buffoonery, but it's beneath the actor despite the fact that he's world-class at that.

I saw Norwegian newspapers slaughtering it, calling it hopelessly unfunny. I only take their reviews with a grain of salt, anyways, but I find it funny how a movie is perceived differently. smile

You're right about humour, Robert - like beauty, a lot of it is in the eye of the beholder smile

I saw the other major Norwegian newspapers giving it respectively 3 and 4, so it's indeed different. (Perhaps Zaphira's going undercover and reviewing it for Norwegian press with that 4!)

Though I prefer his more verbal humour as in Blackadder, I will certainly go and see it. I think the character originally came from a credit card advert.

Yes, it's gotten very varied reviews in Norway...

I can never remember whether I've seen parts of the first movie, or if that was a Mr Bean movie. (Something tells me it was Mr Bean if there's a difference...)

Nice with movies that make you laugh out loud! up
