Friday Purrs

,

A book detailing the world's loudest purring cat's road to success has hit shop shelves.

Smokey has put paw to paper and, with the help of owner Ruth Adams, written the story of her life.

The 12-year-old female British short-hair cat has gained a place in the Guinness Book of Records with an incredible purr that measures 67.7 decibels, and she has even been been known to purr as loudly as 90 decibels.

For comparison, a lawnmower is 90 dB.

Happy purring, everybody. heart

The story of her life?
That's what... 12 years of sleeping, eating, staring at a wall, sharpening her claws, sleeping, eating, sleeping some more, chasing a string, sleeping etc.? p

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, October 21, 2011 7:51:37 AM

I bet there's a lot of "feed me now" going on in that book! lol

FlaRin Friday, October 21, 2011 8:09:17 AM

...and 'Oh right - that plate of fresh catfood that I urgently demanded - I think I'll wait a little while now and maybe lick my fur...who knows...perhaps I'll snooze' smile

My wife has fallen in love with the British short-hair breed, so when we move into something bigger (which can actually happen any time now)I'd have to get her one. The one we have has been getting rather old maid-ish lately. She would benefit from some younger company.

Oh, I see. It's the light in here. I've been wondering if there was a singular thing causing the weirdness...

That was... erm... enlightning...

lol

I'll give you a bit of advice: Don't eat the cookies, and you'll be fine! lol

Since I quit the Bizarro Pills I've become aware of the benefits of sobriety. Of course, I have gone increasingly more crazy, but that is a down-side I can live with.

Word of advice : Don't let Dennis be your guide in these matter, Lion smile

The study of communications was the primary part of my education (journalism, media), and one of the most interesting theories I came upon was one suggesting that words is only a minor part of the process of talking. I don't remember details, but it's something about the intention behind the thing you want to say, traveling via brain waves, proceeding the actual uttering of statement and reaching the recievers brain stem long before the words reach his ears, preparing his consciousness for the incoming message. By training your brain to be aware of this pre-cognition, you will be able to expose a liar (something that would be very usefull for a journalist). A part of this theory also suggest that there is a common 'field' or 'platform' on which we can communicate without words and independent of position in time and space. It's not exact telepathy, but something in the area. It's the same when you 'talk' to animals. They don't understand the words, but they get your intention.

I might do some research on this, just out of curiousity...

Speaking of paranormal communication.

FlaRin Wednesday, October 26, 2011 11:58:24 AM

This ability to communicate on a higher (or maybe lower) level i.e without spoken words - as a virtually instinctive thing, not an intended 'beaming of thought' - is something that has become stifled in us as modern creatures. 'Technology' (to encompass everything since the first commercially successful steam engine in a single word) and the constant background noise of life has blocked it for so long that the majority of us are no longer receptive. Or rather, the majority of us no longer recognise the incoming 'communication', any more than we listen to *everything*, as the brain filters out that which it subconsciously perceives as unimportant.

It is possible to regain this receptive (or precognitive) state, to one degree or another, and a number of people can do it, but we *all* could, at one time in the past.

Listening to more than noise is a skill that's worth developing.

I found his theories interesting FlaRin, but he doesn't seem to be able to show anything scientific to back them up. up .
A bit like religion really, you either believe or you don't but don't ask anyone to prove it or the wrath of (insert relevant deity's name here) will be upon you. p .
I know that I can sometimes 'read between the lines' when people make typing errors or just butcher the English language so badly that Google translate looks scholastic in comparison. p .
But that's the power of the embarrassingly parallel nature of the bio-neural network. yes .
(I think that cup of coffee just kicked in! coffee )

Yes - conventional science has no way of working like this, but i m o these hypotheses and...ummm...contentions are dismissed at our peril. There is a lot of sense and, dare I say it...'intuitive recognition'...accompanying the reading of his work.

He is highly regarded in the world of psychology and psychiatry, however (amongst the practitioners I've known, although I must admit very few of them have been 'normal', although all have been *extremely* insightful and rational).

And I do have (or have had, can't remember if I brought it with me) one of his books - 'The presence of the past' which is extremely interesting and illuminating....well worth the read, whether you think the idea of morphic resonance and all that holds water or not smile Extra ideas are always a good thing...
