The Three Musketeers

, ,

Sunday was "Big Cinema Day" here, which means that you can see any movies you want at half price. It's pretty expensive to go the movies here - tickets starts at around 80DKK (>10EUR) - so this is a nice opportunity for us!

We decided to go watch two movies: "The Three Musketeers" and "Friends with Benefits". Guess who chose which! lol

So anyway - here's the first review; "The Three Musketeers".

This is not the first time Alexandre Dumas' book has been made into a film, but it's been nearly twenty years since the last one. Back then it was Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen and Oliver Platt who played the roles of the brave musketeers. Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson and Luke Evans plays Arthos, Porthos and Aramis respectively in this updated 2011 version.

All the basic elements from the book are present: A young man dreams of walking in his father's footsteps and to serve the King. He travels to Paris, where he runs into a trio of former musketeers. They reveal a conspiracy devised by Cardinal Richelieu in order to remove the very young and vulnerable king. And this is where the similarities end...

This version involves not only the traditional fight scenes in which the vastly outnumbered Musketeers trounce the opposition with style and ease, but also heavily armed airships and air battles in the sky over Paris, raids on underground hidden safes in Venice and Milady de Winter (Milla Jovovich), a kind of double agent, who wires herself down from a tower in Versailles, via a device hidden in her corset. Past film makers must have skipped these particular chapters, when they made their screen versions. King Louis XIII is also characterized very well, and amusingly, by Freddie Fox.

It all worked very well for me. The only actor who didn't shine was Logan Lerman, who played D'Artagnan. I didn't like the way he acted, I found him really annoying - maybe he's not 'strong' enough an actor to carry that character. Please note that the cast also includes a Dane, namely Mads Mikkelsen, who also played the leading part in Valhalla Rising, and bad guy in James Bond movie Casino Royale.

I really enjoyed this movie, and had some good laughs here and there. I especially enjoyed some of the fighting scenes, where they kind of played it in Slo Mo sequences - that was really well made. All the action sequences were very well done, quite exciting in fact - and the characters were all quite well portrayed (exception noted above), with a good amount of understated humour.

star star star star star out of 6.

Waiting for this one to come out on DVD, strangely not waiting for Friends with Benefits at all... bigsmile

Oh DH - I'm surprised!! wink This is a must-have on DVD in my opinion - it's directed and produced with skill and restraint, and really *does* work. And ludicrous as the idea of airship armadas and all that stuff might seem, it all flows together naturally, and the airship-to-airship battles are at least as well done as any of the ship-to-ship battles in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies bigsmile

If asked, I'd give a well deserved 5 out of 6 too - really enjoyable and expertly made up

Well, I wish they'd make a good musketeer movie soon and, if I ever come around to watch this one, I hope you're right. bigsmile

It's definitely a class fun\action movie, Rose up

What's the matter with the book?

FlaRin Tuesday, November 1, 2011 3:10:08 PM

It's too small to read from the back row.... smile

It has to be better than the last one. Though it did have Tim Roth. And a lot of ladders.

KittyliciousZaphira Tuesday, November 1, 2011 6:13:10 PM

I really enjoyed it. The more modern version of the "old story" definitely worked for me.

And I forgot to mention that Orlando Bloom in it too. But of course not as Legolas. awww

One more on my list. yes

I went to see this film yesterday. First time in months I'd even been to the cinema. It was a huge disappointment. Class A actors but the lousiest script ever. A damn waste of ressources and an insult to the original. Beyond embarassing. They should have gotten Guy Ritchie to make this film. I think he did a brilliant job rethinking Sherlock Homes, and he could have done the same job, easy, with this one. Paul W. S. Anderson, who directed this piece of rubbish, should stick to cinematizing video games and stop trying to help his girlfriend with her movie career, because she has absolutely no future in films.

Spaggyj Tuesday, November 1, 2011 10:31:36 PM

Added to the list, moreso because of the contrasting effects it had on you and Martin respectively.

I definitely need to check this out myself to judge... It sounds interesting, although my expectations aren't that high. Getting curious!

I watched the trailer and it seems quite fun, if you suspend your critical faculties. It`s pure fantasy. You are right about Lerman. It`s important that we like the central character, but he does seem slightly annoying. I probably will go to see this.

That picture looks like the old line-up of the Jefferson Airplane. Damn Grace Slick sure let herself go.....lol

Exactly - I loved it because it's the kind of fun that appeals to me hugely (especially after dross like Get Him to the Greek)...I'm not worried if it's 'based on' a novel by Dumas and exceeds the storyline by lightyears - it could have been called 'The Three Caballeros' and would still have attracted the same rating from me smile

I must admit, I didn't like Sherlock Holmes and only made it about halfway through before ejecting the DVD and moving on. Unfortunately I moved directly on to Avatar, which has become my most loathed movie of all time, even more so in retrospect and that certainly coloured my evening - so perhaps Sherlock deserves a second viewing smile I revere Guy Ritchie too - he's made some of my favourite movies...

Jefferson Ice Cream Van - the band that eventually turned into Jeff Airplane and Jeff Starship - and I agree that the hat & eyepatch do *not* suit Grace Slick at all smile

Having said all of that, I kinda see this as a european, land-based Pirates of The Caribbean - it's about at that level, i m o smile

Sounds like they've been inspired as much by spin-offs of the Three Muskateers tale as by the tale itself. Milady is from Dogtanian for example.

I'm in the mood to see this again - it's better than most of them other movies we've watched recently (with one or two exceptions).

Interesting typo #1 : I failed to correctly space the above remark, and at first reading it said: 'it's better than most of the mother movies we've watched recently...'

That too smile

KittyliciousZaphira Tuesday, December 20, 2011 4:12:33 PM

Mother Movies, eh? lol
Well, I somewhat agree, although I've been enjoying more of the ones we've watched than you. bigsmile

FlaRin Tuesday, December 20, 2011 5:08:11 PM

That may be true.....but there *have* been a few stinkers recently, no? wink We only review one a week together, but probably watch between 3 and 5....we can't both think they're all good, and we can't both enjoy each one the same amount, or indeed like or dislike for the same reasons - I like that we're both completely honest, despite what the other thinks - makes for a good and understandable series of reviews, i m o up heart

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Wednesday, December 21, 2011 12:14:42 PM

I've seen this now. Tim Roth and the ladders were better. But the 12 year old I took loved it.

KittyliciousZaphira Wednesday, December 21, 2011 5:47:05 PM

@ Flarin ~ Ain't that the truth. I still enjoy the company though. happy

@ Gavin ~ I'm glad at least half of you enjoyed it! lol
