Tower Heist ~ Svindel på højt plan

,

Movie review

The Tower Apartment building manager Josh Kovacs (played convincingly by Ben Stiller) loves his demanding job of catering to the building's exclusive clientele. Arthur Shaw (played by Alan Alda), the ultra-wealthy penthouse resident, is exposed as a fraud and placed under house arrest by the FBI. Unfortunately he is also the Tower staffs' pension investor, and of course has embezzled the pension funds. Josh determines to get even and steal the pension money back.

Devising a plan to take back $20 million from the extortionate businessman, he assembles a team of Tower employees including concierge Charlie (Casey Affleck), elevator operator Enrique (Michael Pena), and maid Odessa (Gabourey Sidibe), plus easygoing resident, former finance wizard Fitzhugh (Matthew Broderick), to attempt his outlandish scheme. Since none of them are familiar with how to cheat or steal, they team up with professional thief, Slide (Eddie Murphy).

This movie is packed with good actors. Eddie Murphy for one. It's ages since I saw Eddie Murphy in something, so I was thrilled to finally see him play a role again. It was even a role who could have lifted this movie up to hysterically funny heights. But he didn't deliver. I was so disappointed.

Another good actor is Matthew Broderick. He didn't deliver either. He just didn't bring his character to life - again: it could have been funny, but wasn't.

Then there's Alan Alda. He's usually a pretty good and convincing actor. Well... he didn't play his best in this role, in my opinion.

Ben Stiller played very well, and so did Gabourey Sidibe, the hugely overweight maid. They were really good, and not only added something really cool to their characters, but kinda carried the movie, too.

The storyline is basically how the good guys try to recover the money from the bad guy, meanwhile outwitting the FBI, who have bad guy Arthur Shaw under house arrest in his penthouse apartment.

Don't get me wrong. This isn't a hugely boring movie, or bad. It's an action comedy, just not a very convincing one - and while it does have some quite cool action scenes and funny moments, it's not at all as funny as it could have been. A real wasted opportunity, and a total waste of Eddie Murphy, in my opinion.

star star out of 6.

Eddie Murphy hasn't been good in a long time, in my opinion. And don't get me started on Broderick: as he's gotten older he's become really rubbish, it seems. He just seems wooden now.
As it is, I do like Ben stiller movies, even though usually they are mediocre at best, but I'll be giving this one a miss.

I know what you mean about Eddie Murphy. I was however extremely disappointed with him in this movie. I mean, he didn't even look like himself anymore, and I wonder if he had something done with his face. Which he probably hasn't, but still...

Spaggyj Thursday, November 10, 2011 7:32:37 PM

I know what you mean about his face actually, it looks too shiny, and plastic. Perhaps a little Botox here and there? that's enough to cause such an effect. It could have just been bad makeup, I dunno, but it's doubtful.
It's a shame when actors we used to love become something we do not sad

I had high expectations of this movie, was *really* looking forward to it....but as Pussy Cat says, it was a bit of a letdown.

There were some good action sequences and a few extra interesting characters (the doorman is quite endearing), and I really liked the female FBI agent, who takes a shine to Ben Stiller.

But generally it's limp, you know what I mean? Given the cast, it should have been waaaaay better - and the people who made the movie obviously have NO idea how much Gold actually weighs....an old lady is shown lifting up an entire car wheel made out of solid gold...I mean - give me a break!

2 out of 6 is a very fair score, although I might have been tempted to give it 3 out of 6 on a good day, after an apple-vanilla-tini and a Hard Rock Cafe Burger & Fries smile

I'm afraid a lot of comedies are limp now. Maybe it's the stars? They think the famous faces will be enough to carry the film, but if the script is shit, no face will change that.

FlaRin Friday, November 11, 2011 6:29:58 AM

I think it's laziness, and the knowledge that 'limp' is the norm, so it's easy to churn out stuff in which *all* the best and funniest\scariest\most actioned filled moments can be shown in a 10 second burst in TV ads. It makes for disappointing movies.

I think Eddie Murphy was only in this to make some money and maybe to have some control, perhaps some legal thing - originally it was supposed to be an all black version of Ocean's 11 starring him - but it went wrong & Eddie backed out a couple of years ago. Then he came back & we have this lesser product.

Hum. Goes to show that stars alone doesn't make a good movie. It's painful to watch people who used to be good, just not making it anymore.

Stars do fill the boxoffice sometimes. awww .

KittyliciousZaphira Saturday, November 12, 2011 8:46:48 PM

I actually think I would have given this movie an extra star if I hadn't been expecting so much from Eddie Murphy. rolleyes
We're definitely not going to buy this on DVD.

FlaRin Saturday, November 12, 2011 11:27:29 PM

It would have actually been way better if Eddie Murphy wasn't in it. Chris Rock would have been 1000% more entertaining smile

KittyliciousZaphira Tuesday, November 15, 2011 7:46:54 AM

That's a good point. I still can't get over how weird Eddie's face looked.

FlaRin Tuesday, November 15, 2011 11:36:24 AM

Like he's had a facelift and yet bizarrely aged 20 years, right?

KittyliciousZaphira Tuesday, November 15, 2011 12:25:22 PM

Exactly! I looked him up on Wiki, and he's 50 years old. Good genes do a lot, but still... he doesn't look like Eddie Murphy any more. If he entered an Eddie Murphy look alike contest, I wouldn't even vote for him. knockout

FlaRin Tuesday, November 15, 2011 2:14:48 PM

I still think 'Beverly Hills Cop' is his best movie. He *looks* like Eddie Murphy in that one lol

\\edit : And 'Daddy Day Care'. He looked like Eddie Murphy in that one too. Also very amusing smile

KittyliciousZaphira Wednesday, November 16, 2011 3:59:51 PM

Also in that movie, you know, what's it's name... the one where... umm... you know... the one with Eddie Murphy. He looks like Eddie Murphy there too! yes

FlaRin Wednesday, November 16, 2011 5:09:34 PM

You mean 48 hrs?? smile

But I haven't seen 'I Spy', where he plays (presumably) the Bill Cosby character.....he might look like Eddie Murphy in that one too. Any recommendations, or whatever???

KittyliciousZaphira Thursday, November 17, 2011 5:56:16 AM

Yes, exactly! yes
I haven't seen I Spy either. But I'd like to. smile
