Hard Rock Café

I like having my dinner in a restaurant. It doesn't have to be anything fancy or French. In fact, Italian is my favourite, and as a close runner up, comes Hard Rock Café. Hard Rock Cafe is a chain of theme restaurants, their walls are covered with rock and roll memorabilia - guitars, records, posters and so on. And there is always music there. Loud music - which means you can both burp and fart without anybody noticing!
Currently, there are 150 Hard Rock locations in 53 countries.
I do, obviously, own an "All Access Card", which means you don't have to wait in line for a table, you can just stroll right by the angry\impatient people in the queue and get seated almost instantly. I like that. Even though I paid for the card, I still enjoy that fact a lot. People wait in line for 45 minutes or more, on a Friday night - and when we just waltz up and get taken to a table pretty much straight away, it just works, you know?

I've had both great and not so great experiences there. Allow me to share a couple of stories with you.
I'll start with one of the not so successful stories. We went there and got seated right away as always. The waitress came and introduced herself, and left us some menus. We browsed through them, and decided what to order, and then we waited. And waited. And waited. After half an hour she breezed past our table with the words "I'll be right with you", after which she attended to several tables other than ours.
(Open sirloin sandwich. I can't recommend it - it tasted just as messy as it looks...)She finally took our order and we got our drinks. After more than half an hour of waiting, she decided to show up with some food. Unfortunately she didn't bring it all, and said that the rest was going to be brought in shortly. After ten minutes of waiting I called one of her colleagues (she was out of sight) and demanded the rest of the food. He apologized and went to get the remaining order. By the time it arrived of course, the other food was already cold. This does not make for a happy Kitty.
(One of the Hard Rock Café burgers. Highly recommendable.)We finished our meal, and waited for a long time to get to pay (and she fucking had the nerve to suggest a tip, which she obviously didn't get!). We took the receipt and left. It turned out that there was a series of numbers on the receipt that you could use to fill in a survey online. We decided to not let this very bad experience go unnoticed so we filled in the survey and told them exactly what we thought about what happened that evening.
(Desserts, also known as "bites". Peanut butter pie and Strawberry cheese cake. None of them recommendable!)Imagine my surprise when I received an email from Operations Manager saying that she read our survey and she sincerely apologized to us and invited us back to "restore faith".
After a little mailing back and forth, to try and figure out whether she was really inviting us on a free meal, we decided to go there and check it out for ourselves. We asked at the counter, and yes, the Operations Manager had made sure that the evening was complimentary.

(Brownie. Definitely recommendable!)We had a great evening with really good food and excellent service. So - faith restored, and Hard Rock Café is still one of my favourite places to go and have dinner.

Gotta say, that burger looks fucking excellent. Not too fond of the looks of the rest though. Messy and/or over-sweet looking.

The steak sandwich wasn't sweet, but it wasn't any good. They didn't trim the fat off the steak for a start - always a bad move when you have it cooked rare, and it really didn't need all the sauce\melted cheese stuff. Is this how America thinks a steak sandwich should look?? :puzzled: What happened to the meat between two nicely grilled pieces of quality bread idea?
Their burgers really *are* excellent, though

I've never had waiters asking for tips (except in USA) - that's just ridiculous!
But it was decent of the the manager to give you a new meal! And good that that evening turned out much better

They've started to make you enter the total sum yourself here when you pay with card. That way, you can add tip if you like.
I prefer tipping in cash if I tip. I have this naive thought that if I do, it might actually go to the person I think deserve it.
However, I think that, here in Scandinavia at least, waiters don't rely on tips to make it through the month.
And what's up with tipping taxi drivers? Now that's ridiculous! Especially when they use any reason to charge extra (luggage? That's extra. Evening? Extra. Weekend? Extra etc.)

Then I'm reasonably generous
\\edit : getting back to the menu - those baby desserts look good, and are only 45 krone, but are not quite up to it. The strawberry cheesecake thing (my choice) was basically the 'cheese' part with strawberry syrup over the top. Problem was the cheese was on the verge of being 'off'....and the peanut pie thing was a little glass full of stuff that would have been better spread onto bread, or something. Way too rich to just eat by the spoonful.
The real desserts are in a different league, however and are *highly* recommended, if you can fit one in after the burger. I had 'apple cobbler' (not shown), like a rich and sticky apple crumble - it was really delicious, although totally unnecessary after the main meal (but it was free, and I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity)

Lunch btw was yummy : I had a Brie & Bacon sandwich, PC had a Salmon mousse sandwich - both came on a large, warm fresh bread roll with a big pile of salad, drizzled with pesto & olive oil. And a large diet Cola (no ice) each. Nice

Plus they'd have to squeeze me through the entrance when entering the plane!

I won't take Pussy Cat there again, because I can cook a pretty good (Indian) Curry, and there isn't a standard Indian restaurant on the planet that can justify 400+ DKK for an ordinary meal for 2 (2 individual chicken dishes, 2 individual portions of rice and 1 side dish of Aloo Gobi) and 2 Colas. Oh - and a stuffed Paratha, which wasn't that great (overcooked).
I could have cooked that entire dinner in about 45 minutes for maybe 80 to 100 DKK, including the Cokes
Without a doubt the most expensive ordinary curry I've ever eaten in the world, and I've had thousands in my time, in both hemispheres
KittyliciousZaphira # Monday, December 19, 2011 2:44:34 PM
As for the curry - it was ok. But to overprice rice like they did is ... outrageous. 60DKK for plain rice for two (8EUR), that's robbery!!!!

A big establishment, and had only been open for about 2 weeks when we visited. Not quite the usual layout (which consists of a couple of big dining rooms with a queue at the reception desk), but...on multiple floors, with the reception and shop in the middle, at street level.
We were shown downstairs, with no wait, even though we forgot our All Access privilege card. Good
Enthusiastic staff, trying *very* hard
We were not at all happy with the first table we were shown to, blocked in as we were by a trio of very, very fat, slackly dressed and sprawling men, belligerently unwilling to move their seats in by one iota to give anyone else any room to move to the adjoining table. The staff happily moved us, upon request, to another uncompromised and less crowded spot in the restaurant. Good
The waiting staff were pretty quick to attend, and carefully explained our dining options. My choice was the local speciality - a 16 oz burger with the usual trimmings (Cheese, Bacon etc.), plus a big chunk of Goose Liver. It'd be rude not to, right?
An interesting combo, but...ever had Goose liver? I hadn't, and it has the consistency of butter, and melts on a hot burger, Weird and not totally...err....what I expected. It was a *big* chunk, too. Glad to have tried it, won't try it again.
Problem was that one the first take, my burger, underneath the liver, was literally completely raw. I had requested medium rare, but...this was stone cold raw and yet still twitching - not good for minced beef.
I sent it back and the manageress herself came over to sit with and apologize - a gratifyingly quick response to the problem, and sorted with minimal fuss, although it delayed my meal by another 15 or so minutes after we had originally been served.
But it ended happily...Pussy Cat's meal was fine and of the usual standard and appearance...I'd definitely go back (although I wouldn't choose the house speciality again)...and I'd like to mention the impressive interior design...a spiral staircase climbing at least 3 floors, up the middle of which hang a huge number of stainless steel guitar templates (i.e. flat), in a corresponding spiral pattern. Impressive and entertaining
Good luck, HRC Budapest, in a couple of months the place will be running on all 6 cylinders
