The Perfect Body?

, , ,

Do you think it's hard to make the clothes you buy look as good on you as on the models in the magazines? If so, worry no more. The models can't make it look good on themselves either.

In the latest underwear ad from clothes chain "Hennes & Mauritz" different women are showing panties and bras. Their bodies are strikingly similar; take a look:

They are similar because the bodies are computer made, and the heads are photoshopped on afterwards.

- "It is not to create a specific ideal, or to show a perfect body. We have only made it to show our clothes. We do this on all clothing. Not just underwear, and and with both women's and men's wear", assures Håcan Andersson, who is press spokesman for H & M in Sweden.

I say it's bullshit! This is another step towards creating an unreachable ideal! Another step to show women that there is no such thing as "the perfect body". Another step towards eating disorders and low self esteem.

Shame on you, H & M. You won't be seeing me in your shops before you get real again! mad

It's disgusting. The clothes chain Gina Tricot did something similar (they used mannequins without faces and with toothpick thin bodies. Thighs the size of arms.), but after massive criticism they have decided to remove them.
I hope H&M removes the computer bodies and instead embraces the fact that we are all different.

Robert Jacobsenrobertj Thursday, December 8, 2011 12:11:49 PM

D:

It looks as doll bodies... So shiny.

(Is it just me or does the first and last "girl’s" necks look a bit thin?)

J Andersonjimary1999 Thursday, December 8, 2011 1:18:45 PM

You are right on Kitty. I work in an office with about 15 women of all sizes and shapes and they are all beautiful just the way they are! The clothiers and fashion gurus have been doing this to women for many years.

Martin K™Aqualion Thursday, December 8, 2011 1:25:31 PM

Why is it so?

1) The ideal female body apparantly has the shape of a fifteen year old boy.

2) Most of the leading fashion designers are homosexual men.

Combine these two things and you have the answer.

KittyliciousZaphira Thursday, December 8, 2011 1:55:29 PM

@ Rose ~ At least it's something that Gina Tricot decided to removed their "models". As if it wasn't bad enough with the models as skinny as they are. irked

@ Rob ~ You're right, she could be a Barbie doll model with that neck!

@ J ~ Thanks for those words, they are appreciated!

@ Lion ~ Those homosexual designers must have a thing for very young boys then. Eek!!

FlaRin Thursday, December 8, 2011 1:57:40 PM

They're using some marketing exec kid's SIMS 2 to design & display clothes. Ridiculous rolleyes. And as for Va Gina Tricot...yeah, well.

KittyliciousZaphira Thursday, December 8, 2011 4:17:10 PM

Ridiculous is the word. I shall keep my eyes on this and see if they change it back.

Only because you can see both sides .... it doesn't show on the middle two because you can't see both sides; the hair covers one side.
My Gran'pappy told me "Rooster, don't mess around with women who look like if you went to bed with 'em, you'd get all cut and bruised."

Spaggyj Thursday, December 8, 2011 4:31:41 PM

Okay, it's one thing to select painfully thin women, but to shop different faces onto ONE body? And a made-up one?
Fucking disgusting. Fuck you, H&M. This world's hard enough as it is, self-image wise. Boycotted.

DHdarkesthour Thursday, December 8, 2011 7:05:06 PM

I am glad to see that there is a good use for unwanted Barbie dolls..

A lot of the time, advertising companies convince their clients to use controversial images for no other reason than to get attention. Doesn't matter if it's bad attention or good attention, these people figure, so long as people are talking about the company/product. It's stupid, of course, but it doesn't stop them.

It's like the kid who sits up the back in class and makes fart noises with his hands every time the teacher's back is turned; even when the teacher ultimately snaps and hurls a duster at his head, he doesn't care whether the attention is good or bad, so long as he gets the attention.

That's why there's ads like this ... that's why the jingle for that electronics store on TV drives you mad ... that explains the endless insurance ads where Walter died and his family didn't know what to do, but thank God they had insurance for less than the price of a cup of coffee per week ...

It's tragic how a handful of people can affect so many others like this, particularly when it comes to whole generations of people, worldwide, developing eating disorders in an attempt to be 'normal' (whatever that is). And it's shameful how a lot of company heads don't simply tell the advertising gurus to piss off.

"This ad is bullshit and I don't want my company associated with it?"

Nope.

Instead, they accept what the advertising gurus say because, hey, they're the experts. doh

It'd be marvellous if there were laws requiring advertising to indicate whether an image has been computer-generated/enhanced or not, ideally, with the following disclaimer:

"Warning: Images of women in this advertisement are not indicative of actual women. They have been digitally altered. Do not attempt to imitate as such looks are not attainable by humans".

Sort of the fashion equivalent of 'Serving Suggestion' on the front of a box of Cocoa Pops ...

It would be really nice to try on a piece of clothing that was designed for human beings, rather than for sticks. Just once.

irked

Freya RedFreya Friday, December 9, 2011 7:36:34 PM

The second one from the left is me. My diet really worked. p lol
I sometimes buy stuff on-line from American Apparel and their models are not all thin and do look a bit more like normal teens/twenties, if within a narrow range. They encourage ordinary young people to model for them by submitting photos and organizing photo shoots for potential models. smile

Mad Scientistqlue Sunday, December 11, 2011 2:49:36 PM

David, those insurance 'infomercials' are one of the reasons I stopped watching tv. lol .
As a kid we had one channel and every show was enjoyable. Of course, this meant that broadcasting started at 17h00 and ended at 21h00 left .

Cleanclean Sunday, December 11, 2011 3:27:26 PM

Nowadays you get the equivalent in reasonably entertaining content, but it's spread throughout the week over dozens of channels and interspersed with countless ads. Still, roughly four hours hours of decent content out of every 168 is actually pretty good these days ... sad

Martin K™Aqualion Sunday, December 11, 2011 6:00:48 PM

I find 24/7 news channels the most annoying. Especially the Danish. Now, Denmark is one of the smallest countries in the World, and we have the lowest crime rate in Europe. This means that nothing much happens. Still, we have two news channels, broadcasting 24/7. Complete bullocks. It's like this: if a stork lands in somebody's field, a broadcast team will go there and a reporter will stand in front of it while the camera is rolling and report in a serious, dramatic voice, as if it was the beginning of World War III. Everything gets this coverage. Which of course means that the important stuff sort of drowns in the stream of rubbish. It's the end of journalism as we know it. Which I find very sad.

DHdarkesthour Sunday, December 11, 2011 7:35:50 PM

If the most news worthy thing that happens is that then you are living in a good place bigsmile

der WandersmannderWandersmann Sunday, December 11, 2011 8:54:53 PM

Yes, Martin ... DH's place shakes the bloody buildings down on your head.

DHdarkesthour Sunday, December 11, 2011 9:11:23 PM

Its not called the Shaky Isles without good reason..

Cleanclean Sunday, December 11, 2011 9:57:27 PM

Do news programs over your way introduce an upcoming story with a set of footage, then run the story using the exact same footage, then have 'experts' (very few of whom are actually known by anyone) talk about the story while the same damn footage runs a third time in the background, followed by a review of 'the day's top stories' with (you guessed it) the same bloody footage?! doh

On free-to-air over here, we've got ABC 24 which (like the corresponding radio program) has news updates every 15 minutes. Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent channel (non-corporate-owned) and I have either it - or the radio version - on as background noise quite a bit. But some days it's like watching a program on video, rewinding, then watching it again! Like the stork you were talking about, unless something actually happens, they rabbit on about whatever they can to fill time!

As I write this, they're featuring 'news' on the Guinness World Record attempt to break the record for the longest one-on-one radio interview (it's been going on for nearly 22 hours now)! Now, that might be interesting to some people, but it's hardly what I'd call news!

And it's typically like that unless, of course, something 'exciting' happens! Then they hang on to it like a dog with a bone, trotting out two, maybe even three 'experts' to talk about it! God help us on the days when the PM makes a speech and we have to listen to her drone on endlessly and the opposition yap on endlessly about how opposed to it they are. zzz

And, of course, they keep showing the same damn footage! bigeyes

(I take my background noise pretty seriously ... lol )

Edit: Sorry, Zappy! This isn't about your post at all! sad

DHdarkesthour Sunday, December 11, 2011 10:04:26 PM

Most programs, news or otherwise are fairly much like that now, I think they try to please the channel hoppers by regurgitating the "whats happened, what happens next" several times around ad breaks..

Cleanclean Monday, December 12, 2011 12:39:41 AM

And they wonder why people are looking to the Internet for their news ...

DHdarkesthour Monday, December 12, 2011 12:45:26 AM

I find it so irritating now that I have almost completely stopped watching TV. Iwill watch a film, but even that is usually broken up by inane ad breaks every 10 minutes... faint

Cleanclean Monday, December 12, 2011 12:58:26 AM

There's plenty of places on the Internet where films can be downloaded (commercial free) in their entirety, many of them for rental (the file expires after a few days), or to legitimately buy. Of course, I wouldn't advocate illegally downloading films. In any case, there's some nice films out there. smile

DHdarkesthour Monday, December 12, 2011 1:02:40 AM

I just go down to the local rental shop, I can get 8 older movies for $8 and get to keep them for a week. I have been happily re-watching old favourites for months now yes

I used to do that too smile Only problem is that in Tuakau (pop approx 2,500) the outpost of Video Ezy only has a relatively small number of films that I want to watch - and once you've done those....*shrugs* - then it's buying 2nd hand DVDs online from Realgroovy. Hence I now have over 400 DVDs at my disposal to watch (plus Pussy Cat's considerable collection...). There is a space issue, as a consequence rolleyes

Yup... And if they haven't had the time to shoot new footage, they'd use the same footage as last time something similar happened, over and over.

Cleanclean Monday, December 12, 2011 9:28:07 AM

doh

Oh, well ... at least we can see that same footage again when they do a year-end wrap up ... and, in 2012, a 'looking back special' ...

Cleanclean Tuesday, December 13, 2011 9:14:21 PM

Not sure if this is applicable outside the US, but it's from the MPAA, so you know it's legal. lol
