Absalon

, ,

Most Danes have been taught that Bishop Absalon founded Copenhagen around the year 1160. But according to archaeologists from the Copenhagen City Museum, the city had already existed - and was a thriving trading centre - long before Absalon was born.

Archaeological discoveries in Copenhagen show that the town was already thriving around the year 1000 and stretched from what is now Kongens Nytorv to the town hall square. A large and splendid property was found at one end and a marketplace and early church and graveyard at the other.

Maybe it is time to rewrite the early history of Copenhagen!

Here is a photo of Bishop Absalon with a gull on his head.

I had no idea that was the earliest part of Copenhagen :D.

Zaphira 26. November 2008, 08:55

Me neither, until now. It's an oooold town! :D

I bet if they keep digging, they will find that it's much older than 1000 too .

Zaphira 26. November 2008, 09:47

You're probably right. What beats me is, where the hell do they digg? I mean, it's not like visiting Athens or something.

rose-marie 26. November 2008, 10:02

know they found some stuff when upgrading Gustav Adolfs Torg in Malmö, and when they built the Öresund bridge too. It seems like they find stuff accidentally, like when doing road work and such.

Zaphira 26. November 2008, 10:15

Ah, of course. Homer: Doh!

Moesring 26. November 2008, 12:48

The only problem is that when they dig up a road and accidentally discover ancient ruins, it means that the road stays closed for longer than intended. P:

Is there anything buried under Catfiania, President Permit? :D

Zaphira 26. November 2008, 13:23

That's true, Moe, but I haven't heard about that recently, which is why I wondered. P:

Let's just say that I hope nobody ever finds out what is buried under Catfiania.

Interesting!

I particularly like the matter-of-factness of the statement, "Here is a photo of Bishop Absalon with a gull on his head."

Zaphira 27. November 2008, 07:26

Sometimes it is good with a thing that brings the trivia just a little bit down to earth. p:

Dacotah 27. November 2008, 17:05

Gulls don`t care too much about famous people, don`t they P:

Zaphira 29. November 2008, 07:28

No. P:
Either it thinks that Absalon has a good head to sit on, or it disliked him and thinks he is only worth shitting on.

gdare 29. November 2008, 19:56

theoddbod 30. November 2008, 22:37
