Films that made me cry

As some of my regular readers know, I watch a lot of movies. I like action movies, comedies, thrillers and romantic movies. I do not like war movies and science fiction movies much, even though I've seen some of them. But that is not what this post is about. This post is meant as a "I  Movies"-post.

So - here is my top 5 list over films that made me cry:

# 5 : The World according to Garp
It has been one of my favourite movies for a long time. The writer of the book, John Irving, has a great way to portrait his characters. Robin Williams plays a great role as T.S. Garp, and his mom is played brilliantly by Glenn Close. The movie has a lot of hilarious scenes, but the ending is just soooo sad. It makes me cry every time.

# 4 : Titanic
I rewatched this fantastic movie not long ago, and it still made me cry. Not as much as the first times I saw it, but yes, I did cry again.
I think it's the fact that the story about Titanic is true - not the story about the characters in the film, but the historical facts.
It's on my shelf. I will watch it again. And I will cry. Again.

# 3: La Vita è bella (Life is Beautiful)
If you haven't seen this Italian film yet, then you ought to do it soon. It's about a Jewish man, who falls in love with a non-Jewish woman, marries her, has a kid and who is then taken as a prisoner in a concentration camp along with his wife and kid. The film portrays the way he protects his kid from the horrors of the genocide, and how he always tries to find ways to make his wife and kid smile and laugh.
If this movie doesn't make you cry, no movie will!

# 2: Highlander
I have the whole Highlander-series on my shelf. I like the first one the best though. These movies about the battles between the immortals where "there can be only one" holds a special place in my heart.
And how can they possibly make me cry, you might ask yourself.
It's especially the scene where his first wife dies of age that makes me cry my eyes out. awww

# 1: P.S. I love you
This movie was released only last year. It's about a young couple who has been married for nine years, when the husband dies of a brain tumor. Knowing he only has a short time to live he writes her a series of letters that will guide her through her grief.
I've watched it three times now, and it is the only movie I have watched where I cry from the beginning to the end. My throat is sore and my eyes are puffy after watching it. But I love it. It's a must see!
"PS. I love you till the end!"

Chick Flicks? Yeah maybe - but good movies too!

I've only seen Titanic and the Highlander series (tv and movie).
Wouldn't it be cool if Mcloud chopped off Jack's head as they went crashing into the iceberg?
Now THAT would make a cool movie :D

scott cumming 21. November 2008, 08:19

i haven't seen "p.s. i love you" yet, but i will. the others i've seen and i can't really say i cried... but i did tear up watching each of the others. "life is beautiful" was a really cool movie. i loved it. titanic i see once a year or so because i like the first half. nice post.

Kitty 21. November 2008, 08:58

@ Cois ~ I haven't watched neither of the two as a series. I think it would be cooler if McCloud chopped off the annoying husband's head!

@ Artman ~ The P.S. I Love You is really a must see. I don't know what it is, but it really touched me, and it's the only film that made me cry through a whole movie.
Oh, and thank you, I enjoyed writing the post.

r♡se 21. November 2008, 09:28

Awww, what a nice post!
I don't remember the last movie that made me tear up, but I'm quite touchy so it could have been anyone as long as the acting is good and the story is believable.

Here's a fun fact about me - I haven't seen Titanic... :left:

Kitty 21. November 2008, 10:34

Thank you Rose.
I tear up easily too, I even cry over cartoons if they're sad enough :left:

Thanks for the fact *Takes notes for later use* :D

OkayPJs 21. November 2008, 10:38

I think I have only seen Titanic - and I'm sorry but I laughed because I hate DiCaprio :D . I would like to see The World According To Garp, though, because Robin Williams is an outstanding serious actor.

Kitty 21. November 2008, 11:13

The scenes that made me cry in Titanic was especially the ones where people give up. There is one scene where a mother reads a good night story for her two kids as a goodbye, and another where an elder couple lays together, hugging each other because they know what way it goes. *sniffles*

Oh, you should see the Garp film if you get the chance. It's really good.

OkayPJs 21. November 2008, 11:17

Oh yeah, I remember the old couple. That bit did get to me.

I've put Garp on the list

Kitty 21. November 2008, 11:19

Cool!

The Dark Furie 21. November 2008, 11:24

Does number 5 end in a synagogue by any chance? :sst: It's Robin Williams.

Kitty 21. November 2008, 11:40

Number 5 ends in Ireland, and not in a synagogue... :left:
Robbie is now changed to Robin, thank you.

The Dark Furie 21. November 2008, 11:44

Not the film I'm thinking of then. Wonder what it was. :sherlock:

Kitty 21. November 2008, 11:45

I don't think I've seen any film that ends in a synagogue. P:

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsı 21. November 2008, 12:05

I only saw two of this list. Highlander (didn't like) and La Vita Es Bella (very beautiful). Titanic for some weird reason, never interested me.

The World according to Garp is a wonderful book! Read most of John Irving's books, they are brilliant.

The films that I really liked :
Motorcycle Diaries - Che Guevara's early years travelling across South America. Beautiful film. http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=motorcycle+diaries&x=0&y=0

The Postman - the italian film... beautiful scenery and the story of Pablo Neruda's love and isolation. Very touching. http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=the+postman&x=0&y=0

"Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel - loved the fantasy surrounding the love story, the magic of cooking. The author, She is a brilliant writer also. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103994/

The English Patient - a tear jerker.

I am sure to think of more to add to the list. :D

Kitty 21. November 2008, 12:09

I've read most of Irving's books as well, and I liked most of them. He is really a good author!
I haven't seen one single film from your list. awww

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsı 21. November 2008, 12:12

Really? :eyes: They are mostly foreign films, but they have this special quality to them. The scenery in most of them is breath-taking!
I have nearly all of them in my personal dvd collection.

Just thought of another - The Hours - the story of Virginia Woolf and the life of 2 other women and how their lives intertwine. Definitely a chic flick, but is one of my favorites also! :D

The Piano - another beautiful passionate love story and the music is amazing!

The Pianist - broke my heart.

Kitty 21. November 2008, 12:18

I've seen "The Piano", and I remember it as good, but it's been so long since I saw it, so I don't remember any of the details. I have heard about the "English Patient", and lots of people I know think it's good. But it never really found the way to my DVD player.

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsı 21. November 2008, 12:20

I added some links to the films above. :D

Kitty 21. November 2008, 12:32

Thank you - I'll take a look!

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsı 21. November 2008, 12:40

There are trailers for most of them on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwnrswrTkhU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Cw7HtSHQgE

- the actor Gael Garcia Bernal is so cute! A brilliant actor. He speaks a lot of languages fluently. He is amazing.

The Dark Furie 21. November 2008, 13:02

Last film to really choke me up was Dead Poets Society.

"Oh Captain, my Captain!"
*stands on desk and wave's at Til's co-workers*

Kitty 21. November 2008, 13:03

 @ Issy!

@ Mik ~ oh yes, I completely forget about that! I cried at that one as well.

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsı 21. November 2008, 13:19

That film was brilliant Mik!

Mit 21. November 2008, 14:59

I've seen Titanic (don't really like) and Life is beautiful-it made me cry whenever I see it.

Now, I'm seeing PS I love you

Have a nice weekend!

Kitty 21. November 2008, 15:53

Thank you Mit, I hope you'll have a nice weekend too.

Mit 21. November 2008, 16:50

 And I've just seen it. I can't express clearly my feeling but I'm deeply impressed. It's good that today I'm alone in the apartment.

Cois 21. November 2008, 16:53

Patch Adams was one of Robin Williams' flims that gave me a lump.. awww real men don't cry.. oh and when Mufasa died in Lion King *sniff sniff* p:

Kitty 21. November 2008, 17:12

I cried my eyes out when I watched Disney's version of Tarzan, when the big monkey daddy dies. awww

Suntana 21. November 2008, 17:28

I haven't seen any of those, Zap. Yep, before you stands the person on the planet who did NOT see Titanic.

Kitty 21. November 2008, 17:41

Allright - soon there'll be another list of movies, Suntana, perhaps you'll do better next time. P:

And hey - Rose didn't see it either. :D

Angeliki 21. November 2008, 18:25

Zaphira,

:o: Thank you very much for the nomination!
it was very generous of you, I appreciate it immensely!

have an amazing weekend
Angeliki

Kitty 21. November 2008, 18:27

Did I nominate you? :eyes:
I think you mistake me for someone else.

I wish you a great weekend anyway.

Angeliki 21. November 2008, 18:33

if I do,
I apologize,
I wrote down all the names of members that nominated me and I see yours here too
well I was delighted that it was a reason to visit your post ,
it seems that it might be a place to visit in the future more often!
thanks for returning my good wishes

Kitty 21. November 2008, 18:35

It's not a problem at all.
Thank you for the kind words.

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsı 21. November 2008, 21:00

I did NOT see Titanic either! :irked:

Kitty 21. November 2008, 21:05

Sowwy Issy. awww

Please forgive!

Cois 22. November 2008, 12:08

Did you see Titanic 2?

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsı 22. November 2008, 12:30

nope!

no problem Zaphira!

The Dark Furie 22. November 2008, 12:46

Revenge of the Ship. It was excellent. Titanic rose from the sea and was killing teenagers because they had sex or did drugs. Classic slasher movie. :headbang:

Cois 22. November 2008, 16:14

theoddbod 24. November 2008, 21:16

I've only seen PS I Love You, which was pretty good.

Last thing to move me to tears was actually the ending scene to the Futurama episode Jurassic Bark awww.

Kitty 25. November 2008, 06:25

@ Mik ~ I thought the ship already got revenge in the first one. :D

@ Mart ~ I haven't seen it. What did it end with? :left:

theoddbod 25. November 2008, 08:04

I'm not going to describe it - I couldn't do it justice. If you've not watched Futurama, you should do. Indeed, you must! :knight:

I'll let IMDB and Wikipedia fill you in on this particular episode :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0584444/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurassic_Bark

Kitty 25. November 2008, 08:15

That sounds pretty sad awww

Perhaps even sadder if I had seen just one episode of the Futurama. I don't think it has been on TV here.

The Dark Furie 25. November 2008, 14:40

If it's the dog one then it's brilliantly played. Most comedies portray deaths really well, getting the emotion over in realistic ways that dramas tend to over play.

Kitty 25. November 2008, 15:35

The links describe the "dog one", and I agree. Dramas are often "too much", not even real life is like that.

Darko 28. November 2008, 18:26

"P.S. I love you" is the only movie that made me cry for most of the time - I didn`t even know it is possible :left:
:sst: I cried at "Beauty and the beast" and "Little Mermaid" too :left: :right:

scott cumming 28. November 2008, 22:25

don't forget forest gump. that had a few touching moments. i cried when he started running and his leg braces burst off.

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsı 28. November 2008, 23:44

Forest Gump was really good.
