Friendships - here and on Facebook

, , ,

Let me tell you right away that I never really got this Facebook hysteria. A friend of mine wanted me to join facebook, and when I curiously asked what I could use it for, she answered: "To pry into old acquaintances' lives". I don't get that. If they were only acquaintances back then, why would I be interested in what they do now? confused

And this "friends" thing. It seems to me that it's about getting as many on your friends list as possible. But this is like the social networks' STDs! You'll get whatever your friends' friends have too, and are you really interested in that?

A friend of mine has big problems with this. She has a couple of hundred "friends" on Facebook, which means that she's not always writing what she really wants to, because she doesn't want all of her "friends" to see it.

Here's a couple of examples of how it can get you into trouble...: (Read from the bottom and up)

The disease is spreading to MyOpera too. Heaps of people I've never ever talked with me want to be my friend. But I have only a selected few on my list, because I want my friends list to contain only friends!

It's as simple as that, really.

Anyone seen the Beaver??Ooh baby!

lol how awkward is that lol I have a facebook presence and the whole thing's as Boring As Fuck - although I *have* been able to contact two very old & dear friends - but other than that, B A F smile

Hey there's a movie out *now* about the facebook dude ('The Social Network'), supposed to be really good (although liberal with the facts) - wanna go see it?? smile (If you've already seen it, wanna go again? lol )

Bud McDonnellfammcdon Saturday, November 13, 2010 8:35:14 AM

+1 Because I welcome new members in the Introduction Thread, it seems that many take that as an open invitation to "Friend" me. Whether they contact me or not (probably not). Any more it seems like a contest where the one who collects the most friends wins. I've even had to block several persistent buggers. irked I could go into a major rant because this behavior really get to me but I'll stop here. angel p

KYrenKYren Saturday, November 13, 2010 8:50:44 AM

I am on FB. I have only 30 friends. Most are the people I know from OC. smile

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Saturday, November 13, 2010 9:34:48 AM

Facebook sucks.

Bad WolfCois Saturday, November 13, 2010 10:07:23 AM

i'm on facebook. Mostly a family thing for me though some mates from my old school and people i don't see much that moved. Thing is the FB thing took off here in South Africa so most people use that instead of Opera to get to the wonderous online world.. rolleyes

KittyliciousZaphira Saturday, November 13, 2010 11:18:14 AM

@ Flarin ~ I heard about that movie, and I also considered go seeing it. smile But I think I'll wait till it's out on DVD. Ha, I guess that means "yes please"! lol

@ Bud ~ This is a subject that pops up now and again. And I really mean it when I write that it's the social networks' STD! Why would you wanna befriend someone you've never talked with.
I sometimes imagine it happening IRL... like... someone passes you up in the supermarket, saying: "Hey! wink You wanna be my friend?" lol

@ Kiran ~ Facebook never really interested me, even though I might have to sign up at some point because of work. left

@ Gavin ~ Hear hear!

@ Wolfie ~ None of my friends know about Opera, but they're almost all on Facebook. And on.. umm... *thinks* ... I can't remember the name! left

Bud McDonnellfammcdon Saturday, November 13, 2010 11:38:06 AM

lol I'm gonna try that next time I go grocery shopping. p

Spaggyj Saturday, November 13, 2010 11:42:58 AM

Comparing that attitude to STDs is spot on lol . I hate Facebook, which is why I cancelled my account there.

Bud McDonnellfammcdon Saturday, November 13, 2010 12:35:28 PM

I've never had one...never saw the need. Might get one eventually just to see what all the fuss is about.

Dark FurieFurie Saturday, November 13, 2010 12:40:46 PM

Yes kitten, your "friend" is the one being mean on Facebook. p

der WandersmannderWandersmann Saturday, November 13, 2010 4:30:52 PM

I don't "do" FB ... always seemed really stupid to me.
See the sticky post on my blog re: friends.

KittyliciousZaphira Saturday, November 13, 2010 8:04:32 PM

@ Kimmie ~ The concept of Facebook don't appeal to me *at all*, so why don't you and I just stay here and make ourselves at home? flirt

@ Mik ~ What? left *checks friends list* Oh... I see at least one mean person there. p

@ dW ~ We're on the same page for sure. yes

I experience that to a certain extent too (we probably all do) and it's just... I mean - what's the point of 'friending' someone you've never even spoken to, not once?? I don't get it.

It makes the whole thing just like collecting stamps (something else that I don't understand the magic of).

It takes me personally a long time to make friends (here and in The World) and I value them, their company and their views, comments etc. You said recently, Pussy Cat, that it's like some random shopper coming up to you in the supermarket & nudging you & saying "wanna be my friend? Huh? Do ya? Huh?" and giving you a sleazy grin...well, that's about it isn't it - you gotta be careful who you interact with. Just say No!! rolleyes

I know a heap of people have words to this effect on their 'about' page, or introductory sticky post - but - does it make any difference?? <listens up to hear...>

I still think facebook's as B A F, but it's still a viable means of communicatiuon for a lot of kids, just like texting. And if there's one thing that's important, it's communication by any means - so I guess it has it's place smile

Spaggyj Sunday, November 14, 2010 1:55:40 AM

Ooh, saucy left right bigsmile

Martin K™Aqualion Sunday, November 14, 2010 8:18:57 AM

I use Facebook for a lot of different purposes, mostly to keep updated with what is going on in my city, but also as a means of tjecking out what people think of different things. There are serious people doing serious business on Facebook. It is not only crap. I have met some people through Facebook that I would not have met IRL, since we are talking about people who don't come out at all, people - like me - with dissabilities. And almost all the activities I have IRL need a central communication device, and we use Facebook, because it is already there and we don't have to invent it all over again.

FlaRin Sunday, November 14, 2010 5:37:30 PM

And there you have it - communication - that's what it's all about up

Bud McDonnellfammcdon Sunday, November 14, 2010 5:54:11 PM

I thought the Hokey-Pokey was what it's all about. confused

FlaRin Sunday, November 14, 2010 8:10:22 PM

Maybe it's because you're a Londoner? confused

Bud McDonnellfammcdon Sunday, November 14, 2010 8:36:50 PM

I moved and nobody told me? irked I don't remember giving permission for this. mad

KittyliciousZaphira Sunday, November 14, 2010 8:53:54 PM

Just blame the cat. Everybody does that anyway. awww

FlaRin Sunday, November 14, 2010 9:16:51 PM

Awwwww :hugs the poor Kitty, even tho' she has a naughty & amused gleam in her eye: Are the nasty people upsetting you??

<resounding bitchslap arrives upside Flarin's head>

Owww!!

lol

Dark FurieFurie Sunday, November 14, 2010 9:58:48 PM

Awww kitten, I'd never blame you for anything. left

Jurjenjekav Sunday, November 14, 2010 10:04:35 PM

My opinion is that personal stuff needs to be shared in person and definitively doesn't belong on the public internet. Many people don't seem to care about that. I think I have people in my friend list in OC that I never spoke to... I don't really give value to my friendlist, I never make friends only post, so if someone seems interesting enough and want to be 'friends' I'm okay with that smile

I'm not into facebook neither. Had to create an account for work, I have 1 friend and zero content bigsmile

Bad WolfCois Tuesday, November 16, 2010 4:58:58 AM

and you had to create one for work? sherlock

Jurjenjekav Wednesday, November 17, 2010 8:18:03 PM

Yes, to develop some facebook implementations on a website.

Bad WolfCois Wednesday, November 17, 2010 9:15:06 PM

i see..doh somehow that escaped me.. p

r♡serose-marie Saturday, December 11, 2010 6:33:41 PM

Hahaha! Hilarious picture!
I use fb to easier stay in touch with friends and family back home. I do keep specific photo albums and such private, and made my profile unsearchable on teh interwebz. That works for me up

KittyliciousZaphira Sunday, January 9, 2011 12:15:34 PM

lol

FlaRin Sunday, January 9, 2011 8:24:13 PM
