Creepy Crawly

, ,

The Copenhagen Zoo has an entire section of creepy crawly. Sometimes I'm lucky to get a few good shots of the little insect.

Look at this - it's an insect that survives by looking like a branch:

The poisonous frogs are so fascinating. I think it's amazing that some tribes have actually used the frogs' poison to make their arrowheads deadly when hitting the target!

Other little beetles had their breakfast. :D

Playful Polar Bear

,

Polar bears - or Ursus maritimus in Latin - they're one of my favourite Zoo animals. We call them isbjørne in Danish - which can be translated into Ice bears.

The polar bear is the biggest of bears, an adult male weighs around 350–680 kg (770–1,500 lb), while an adult female is about half that size.

The male was in a very playful mood the day I was there. He had a little piece of bone that it played with:

He stood on the shore and tossed the bone into the water, and then jumped into the water after it
I know the pic is a bit blurry, both because of the movement in the picture, but also because it took me totally by surprise! But it can at least give you an impression of how playful the bear was:

Then he dived and got the bone up, swam around with it, dropped it to the bottom, dived down after it again... Here he's splashing around with the bone on his giant paw:

Then he got back up on the shore, shook the water off himself...

... and started all over again.

Butterflies!!

, ,

Since one of my Zoo posts made it to the front page of My Opera, there's been a lot of requests for a butterfly post.

My Zoo holds a little Tropical Zoo as well, with an entire room for the exotic and beautiful butterflies. I love going there, especially in the summer. Why in the summer, you might ask yourself (or even me!) - that's because the temperature in the tropical zoo is high - it is a tropical zoo after all - and it's much more fun to go there in summers clothes and flip flops than in big parka coats and boots!

Anyway - here's what you've been waiting for... butterflies!

I had a butterfly like this on my lens... silly butterfly, I can't take picture on it when it's on my camera!

And one of these wanted to land in my hair!

I think this sort is the biggest sort in the zoo here. It has got a pretty large "body"!

Butterflies are so pretty. They're my favourite macro models!

And today's last picture:

I hope you enjoyed the tour! Now go have yourself a great weekend!

Cute little Lion cubs

, ,

The last time I went to the Zoo it was a grey day. That means that some animals are more active than they usually are. I mean - if you go there on a warm summer day, you can be sure that the lions aren't doing anything but sleeping.

But look at these cute attentive lion cubs:

This was quite funny. I haven't seen them paying any attention to the audience before:

And the last pic for today:

It was a nice day at the Zoo - I'll post more pics later!

Have a great weekend!

Taking a Break ~ Going to the Zoo

,

It feels as if it's been ages since I went to the Zoo. I do have a season ticket because I see the Zoo as an oasis in the middle of a big city.

So anyway - I needed a little break - so I grabbed my camera gear and my bicycle and went there.

Long time ago I promised Cois to take a photo or two of the wolves - and I forgot. Sorry wolfieboy, my bad. Here's to make it up to you:

The wolves were very active that morning. It was a cold, grey, but dry morning, the time of day where many of the animals are more active than during the day.

This wolfie even took a bath in the yucky green water:

While he was in the water, the others stood on the "shore", whimpering.

Then I passed the red pandas. They are so cute!

I promised Angeliki a picture of the elephants. There wasn't many of them out this early, but I caught an early bird. :D I hope you like it.

No visit to the Zoo without saying hi to the tigers! They had a baby tiger!

Unfortunately it wasn't out for long, because the male tiger was about to be fed. And I think they take the cub out when he eats in order not to risk any kinds of "accidents"...

I had planned to visit the tropical Zoo too, to take some photos of the butterflies, but honestly, I'd rather go home, so I did. I think I might take a short tour there next week.

I hope you enjoyed the tour to the Zoo just as much as I did.

The Lion and the Lionesse

, ,

I just thought I wanted to share a couple of shots of the lions, I took last time I was in the Zoo.

Here's the male lion, Oleg. He came to Copenhagen Zoo in July 2003, after two lionesses had killed the old male lion. Oleg was five years old when he arrived, and he managed to earn the female lions' respect. He is now the father of many lion cubs, and the new life makes the lion cage worth a visit.

The staff passed the cage with two Camels, that's why this beauty of a lioness is so attentive!
