My Weird Phones

, ,

I saw an article somewhere about weird looking phones, and that reminded me that I've had some weird looking phones too. I've always been a Nokia girl - and I've had quite a few.

The first weird looking phone I had was a Nokia 7110.

It was the first Mobile Phone to have a WAP Browser, and you may think that it doesn't look weird. But it did at the time. The one I had was annoyingly buggy. I couldn't hang up the usual way - I had to take the battery out to hang up. rolleyes

The next one I remember was the Nokia N-Gage QD.

That is a combined handheld game console and mobile phone, but it never really became the big hit that Nokia hoped for. I don't really know why. It's a seriously cool phone, and I've played a lot of "Sims bustin' out" on it. yes

Then I had the Nokia 3650.

That was the first Symbian Series 60 smartphone to appear in American markets. It was also the first phone with an integrated camera delivered to North America. Some stated that the rotary style keypad made text messaging easier and faster. I can assure you that it's not the case. I text pretty fast on phones with regular keypads - but I never really became fast on this phone. I love the look of it though - and I had covers in all kinds of colours for it.

I've had my hands on a Nokia 7280 once too.

I knew someone who had one, and I borrowed it for a week.
The 7280 "lipstick" phone supports GSM, SMS, MMS, HSCSD, GPRS, and SyncML. It has a VGA camera. Its design features a slider end and a Navi-Spinner in the place of a keypad. As part of Nokia's "Fashion Phone" line, it has black, white and red styling, and a screen that fades to a mirror when inactive. Fortune Magazine listed it as one of the best products of 2004 while its design was praised by the jury in the iF product design awards for 2005.
I gave up on it. Writing a simple text message was almost impossible!

Right now I am looking at a new phone. The GPS in my Nokia has decided to die, and since I get lost everywhere, I really need a new one.

I've been looking at the Nokia 6760 Slide.

I fell in love with it the first time I laid eyes on it. love

So... what do you say? Do I have a thing with weird looking phones? bigsmile

Oi! Phones!

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, May 7, 2010 5:05:36 AM

Cool, right? bigsmile

Dacotah Friday, May 7, 2010 5:07:18 AM

"I had covers in all kinds of covers for it."
Do you mean you had covers in all kinds of colors or do they have different covers completely?

The last phone looks cool. smile

arduinna Friday, May 7, 2010 6:49:58 AM

Vintage... psmurf my first phone ... I only had and have Sagem ... an unknown trademark by now but was the first in France 5-7 years ago ...

FlaRin Friday, May 7, 2010 7:10:55 AM

I have a Nokia 6300 for work :
http://dailymobile.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/nokia-6300-black-picture02.jpg -
and a Sony i-mate jam for texting my best friend :
http://affordablephones.net/fpdb/iMate-Jam.jpg -
..and an HTC Titan for both texting and phoning my best friend :

(The Nokia & the Sony are cool, the HTC would be very cool if the service provider was good, but they're really crap - but it makes a good stand-by device, for sure)

smile

I really like the look of that 6760, Pussy Cat up

Spaggyj Friday, May 7, 2010 8:15:43 AM

Nokia have certainly made some weird looking phones lol . The 6760 is quite nice, reminds me of another model but can't remember which.

Dark FurieFurie Friday, May 7, 2010 10:53:09 AM

Dennis was looking at that phone and I'll give you the same advice I gave him - try it out first. It's an oddly shaped device and some people have problems with that keyboard. Also it's quite a bit less powerful than you're used to from Nokia phones.

arduinna Friday, May 7, 2010 12:14:09 PM

The HTC Titan has a "sar" of 1.13 W/kg, the Nokia 6300 a "sar" of 0.57-0.63 according to the type, and Nokia 6760s a "sar" of 0.87 ... The Nokia 6300 double your life expectancy alien !

Dark FurieFurie Friday, May 7, 2010 1:16:05 PM

The Titan has been designed for laptop use while the 6300 has been designed for ear use. It's more about fertility versus life expectancy.

Mad Scientistqlue Friday, May 7, 2010 1:16:06 PM

I'm still waiting for the N900. awww.
It was predicted to land in April, it's may already and neither MTN nor Vodacom have heard anything about it! cry.

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, May 7, 2010 1:21:59 PM

@ Carol ~ Thanks for that, I meant that I had covers in all kinds of colours for it, and I've corrected it in the post now. up

@ Arduinna ~ I don't understand that "sar" thing you wrote up there. left

@ Flarin ~ That HTC looks pretty cool! up And the iMate shows your true identity, Mr R. Carmello. lol
I hate it when service providers don't do what they're supposed to do. Deliver the texts for heaven's sake! yes

@ Kimmie ~ You're right, they've really made some funny looking devices, and I haven't even tried all the weird looking ones. bigsmile

@ Mik ~ I can't try it out first, I've only seen it online (which is also why I haven't bought it yet!) awww

@ Aadil ~ Aww, poor you! So, what are you using until it arrives?

Mad Scientistqlue Friday, May 7, 2010 1:43:58 PM

A Nokia E65 with seriously outdated (and 'branded') firmware! irked.

Dark FurieFurie Friday, May 7, 2010 1:50:07 PM

Poor Kitten. awww Hmmm, I'll have a look around.

Dacotah Friday, May 7, 2010 2:15:19 PM

You are welcome Kitty. I don't have a phone so I wasn't sure what way you meant. smile

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Friday, May 7, 2010 3:54:04 PM

I like! The QD was great.

r♡serose-marie Friday, May 7, 2010 4:09:35 PM

Oooh, I remember the lipstick! I even thought about getting one once. bigsmile

Is that first one the one they called the banana?

"SAR" is the "Specific Absorption Rate" in Watt/Kg, it gives an idea of how much power receive your brain when you phone. The problem is that some say it has no importance, others say it can bring cancer,... Better to be careful and take the lowest digit. Sorry for throwing that without explanation.

Mad Scientistqlue Friday, May 7, 2010 5:00:40 PM

Of course, the assumption is that you will be talking with the phone stuck to your ear. I probably absorb more EMI from the fluorescent lighting than from my phone. lol.

Martin K™Aqualion Friday, May 7, 2010 5:09:41 PM

My best phone ever was the Motorola Timeport 260. It lasted from 2000 to early 2007, which is quite long for a mobile phone.

http://opiniuj.pl/files/Motorola%20Timeport%20260.jpg -

Currently I have one of these...

http://www.clubsonyericsson.com/products/w810/w810.jpg -

I've had it for three years and it's still in mint condition.

Non of them particularly weird looking, though.

arduinna Friday, May 7, 2010 5:30:26 PM

Fluorescent lighting emit ultraviolet rays as well, which is the most dangerous, EMI not that much as it's doesn't interfere too much with other appliances. If you want to find the equivalence of what is emitted by fluorescent lighting to get 1-2 W in your ear, you will find it radiates like a micro-oven... but with open door.!! Nevertheless a lot is hidden to a large public that prefer to ignore it.

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, May 7, 2010 5:34:32 PM

@ Aadil ~ I'll cross my fingers that you'll get the phone soon! up

@ Mik ~ Thank you - any input is appreciated up

@ Carol ~ smile Sometimes it doesn't help to proofread the posts - typos like that slip in everywhere smile

@ Gavin ~ I know! yes I still play Sims on mine. bigsmile

@ Rose ~ I'm still glad I didn't actually buy that lipstick. I didn't learn to text in the time I borrowed it. rolleyes
I don't remember if the first one was called Banana... left

@ Arduinna ~ Oh, I see. I have heard about that, and then forgotten all about it again. Thanks for the explanation. smile

@ Lion ~ I am impressed that you can make a mobile phone last for 7 years! :whoa: Mine never lasted that long. awww

Dark FurieFurie Friday, May 7, 2010 5:37:32 PM

Rose, the banana is the 8110 or something like, only released in Asian markets and well known as the Matrix phone. This is the first European WAP phone and constantly mistaken for the banana because of its spring-loaded slide action.

Mad Scientistqlue Friday, May 7, 2010 5:37:57 PM

Mik has a hard time getting a phone to last seven months! p.

Dacotah Friday, May 7, 2010 6:02:59 PM

smile

Martin K™Aqualion Friday, May 7, 2010 7:31:20 PM

I don't use phones a lot. I have maybe one conversation per day lasting less than five minutes or so. Most of the time, it's just in my pocket. I was never much of a telephone conversationalist, so it's no wonder I can keep a unit for seven years.

FlaRin Friday, May 7, 2010 7:45:33 PM

Yeah!! If you can't rely on the text getting there *instantly*, it's very, very dangerous, 'cause you don't know what your friend's received - also very frustrating, and a constant worry - that's why I only use it as a backup - the i-Mate & Nokia are both on a different service provider smile The Titan is a very good phone, though up

Angelikiellinidata Saturday, May 8, 2010 12:54:29 AM

w0w!!! very "cool

Dark FurieFurie Saturday, May 8, 2010 2:13:39 AM

I'll help if I can, kitten, but you may have noticed a distinct lack of phone posts recently. There's hasn't been much going on in the mobile world that has been worth my attention for ages now. It's all pretty blah. Can I assume the Windows Mobile device didn't work out and you're looking for a Nokia?

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Saturday, May 8, 2010 8:58:29 AM

iPhone. left

*Goes behind a corner and waits for the explosion*

Actually, I really like the iPhone; it's just a bit too dear for what it is, a 'phone with built in toys.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Saturday, May 8, 2010 9:51:53 AM

Oops. We did clone him, right?

Mad Scientistqlue Saturday, May 8, 2010 10:31:00 AM

Martin K™Aqualion Saturday, May 8, 2010 10:53:38 AM

I have yet to find a phone with build in cigarette lighter and bottle opener. Until I see that, I am not impressed.

FlaRin Saturday, May 8, 2010 10:57:15 AM

Hey - those fists....they look kinda...familiar... left

KittyliciousZaphira Saturday, May 8, 2010 3:58:25 PM

Whoa, that's a lot of explosions here! bigeyes

*gets the broom and starts cleaning up*

What a mess you guys made! mad

@ Mik ~ No no, the HTC works just fine, but that's my work phone, I'm not supposed to make private calls on that one, or texts. It's my 6110 that needs a replace - the GPS part doesn't work anymore. awww And yes, I definitely prefer that the new one is a Nokia too. yes

@ Lion ~ Be impressed:
http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/lighter-phone.jpg -
bigsmile

@ Flarin ~ Without the head he didn't need the hands anymore, so they chopped them off and are now selling them in a Catfianian shop. up

Martin K™Aqualion Saturday, May 8, 2010 6:40:10 PM

I am impressed. On the other hand, this means I can forget about getting a patent on my Nokia 5110 with a duct tape attached Bic Lighter... Damn, too slow again.

Dark FurieFurie Saturday, May 8, 2010 9:00:49 PM

Okay, working on a best price for features ratio the 6210 and 6710 are sliders in the navigator family and the 5800 has a navigation edition. All have the new Ovi Maps service with free travel and city guides as well as free navigation but that requires data to download. No specific problems I know of with any of them.

FlaRin Sunday, May 9, 2010 3:30:27 AM

< puts away stethoscope, looks at headless, twitching torso, points at shoulders and says "well, there's your problem..." > smile

Excellent idea up I guess the head-sized dollop of Coulis made quite a mess, huh?? lol

\\edit : by the way - here's a useful phone-mutation - just touch a potential attacker with this, and he'll benefit from a 180,000 volt charge and know he's been put down by a Pussy Cat!! bigsmile

KittyliciousZaphira Sunday, May 9, 2010 12:33:46 PM

@ Mik ~ Thanks a lot. I have actually been looking at the 6710, but I fell for the look of the 6760 instead. I might take a second glance at the 6710 before I make the final decision. smile

@ Flarin ~ That's awesome! yes Does it come in red? bigsmile

Martin K™Aqualion Sunday, May 9, 2010 12:53:55 PM

I picture some poor sod visiting the phone shop at the shopping center with his tazer/cigarette lighter/x-ray vision/gatling gun/touch screen/biometric lock model, putting it on the desk with one questiuon: 'Exactly how do I activate the telephone menu? I want to call my mum?'

Dark FurieFurie Sunday, May 9, 2010 1:19:16 PM

I just wish you could try it out first, see if you can use it properly. The only complaint I've heard is about the keyboard being quite flush with the slide, the RAM, and the American network branding on their version.

KittyliciousZaphira Sunday, May 9, 2010 1:57:28 PM

Hmmm... I'll see if I can pull a string or two and get my paws on it before I decide. I might be possible.

FlaRin Monday, May 10, 2010 8:59:49 AM

Dark FurieFurie Monday, May 10, 2010 1:20:53 PM

You may indeed be possible. left

Martin K™Aqualion Monday, May 10, 2010 1:40:45 PM

My wife talks about the Sony Ericsson Xperia all the time. Her old Nokia 6102 is slowly dying, and I have managed to brain wash her into Sony-mode. I don't know dick about mobile phones, but as far as I can tell, Xperia seems like a good choice, if you need to use the phone for other things than just talking and texting. Especially the GPS seems to be a fancy of hers.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Monday, May 10, 2010 3:09:14 PM

Sony Ericssons are slow. Nokia have the mobile thing down. Mostly.

KittyliciousZaphira Monday, May 10, 2010 3:10:48 PM

I'm so lost without my GPS. awww Went to the local phone shop today - the 6760 was not there. awww

I'll keep looking though. At some point I might even find out where I am. lol

Martin K™Aqualion Monday, May 10, 2010 3:17:55 PM

Sony Ericsson makes the best phones. Period. If you need a small computer, you should chose something else. I know that. However, I very rarely need to go online with my phone, I can't be arsed with the small screen and small keys and lousy sound, so I don't. The way people use their phones for internet business... Well, I don't get it. Why bother? But that's just me being oldfashioned.

Dark FurieFurie Monday, May 10, 2010 4:03:52 PM

Actually Sony Ericsson has dropped in my estimation over the past couple of years. Their highest quality phones have pretty much all been licensed to other companies recently.

Anything a PC user can do, I can do better from my phone. p
