Wow got carriers in Malaysia Promoting Android Devices, but they are STUPID

, , , ...

Finally, there are carriers in Malaysia promoting Android Devices, but boy oh boy, they seriously must be stupid? Why will a local telco company promote a USA telco company Application. Taken from:- http://www.maxis.com.my/personal/android/Android_Marketplace.asp as of 30th April 2010

Maxis, is a Malaysian Telco Company, but they must be seriously either
a) stupid, for promoting another company's application which won't work on our local devices, or
b) lazy, for just copy-pasting the application list from the original Android Marketplace.

Also by checking out here:- http://www.maxis.com.my/personal/android/Android_Phones.asp , we can see that there is up to 5 choices of Android phones, which is great, since we get more choices, but the difference between the prices that Maxis offers compare to the regular retail price is only RM400. In USA, the Motorola Milestone is 199USD (it is called the Motorola Droid there) if you buy it from Verizon Wireless with a package, which is around RM700 if you convert it using the current currency exchange rate. Here in Malaysia, we buy it with a package, is around RM1899 (original price RM2299). They really are greedy assholes. They really still dont grasp the concept of how to sell phones.

Even another local carrier, Digi offers a Android base smartphone, http://www.digi.com.my/internet/smartplan/htc_legend.html this carrier's price is slightly better, as they offer discount up to RM1000 if you buy a phone + package from them. Only problem is that the package limitation sucks, you are going to pay so much but get so little bandwidth. (this reason can is explained in my previous blog posting). Comparing Digi to Maxis, Digi is not so bad, best get a Android phone from Digi cause as I said above, Maxis are greedy assholes.

Why telecommunication providers dont want you have good mobile internet ?

, , , ...

I don't know about the rest of the world, but since I live in Malaysia, I am going to be basing this on what happens in Malaysia.

Smartphones are becoming an ever increasing thing in most people lives, just like how every tom, dick and henry owns a mobile phone in the present, every tom, dick and henry will be owning smartphones in the future. I am sure most tech-analysis will concur to this, hardly anyone will disagree.

Let's look at what can be achieved with most smartphones in general:-
a) Listen/Stream music or radio stations online (sometimes even PodCast)
b) Have your instant messenger on (GoogleTalk, MSN/WindowsLive or even Yahoo Messenger)
c) Surfing news websites
d) Updating Social Networking statuses (Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare, Myspace, etc)
e) Watching/Streaming a video
f) Uploading multimedia captured from phone (Video + Pictures)
g) Check Google Maps for directions or Navigations
h) or even maybe playing some social networking / multi-player games.

Here is the problem, most of these things need an Internet Connection, and in Malaysia not everywhere there is free WiFi available (unless you are pro in WEP cracking, since most people still use WEP here). To put it bluntly, to truly enjoy a smartphone you really must have 3G/Mobile Internet access.

There are basically 3 major players in Malaysia, which are Maxis (www.maxis.com.my), Digi (www.digi.com.my) and Celcom (www.celcom.com.my). All 3 of them offer 3g / Mobile Broandband services, but all 3 are charging the earth for it. They charge around RN68-99 for a 3GB Limit. (or maybe around 5gb, depending on package). The average working salary for a degree holder is around RM2500, and around RM2000 is already spent on basic necessities. Most people have around RM500 or less to spend on entertainment stuff like Mobile Broandband (since they already most likely have Internet in their homes which is also around RM99/month).

About the bandwidth quota, 3-5gb is considered little if you actually use most of it's features. Listening to MP3s online will easily take up 28mb minimum, and watching a 20 minute video on youtube will be easily 60mb. Assuming you use your mobile internet about 3-4hrs a day, you will already be using up your monthly quato with ease. I am all about having a quota to ensure fair usage and no abuses, but atleast make it a decent 10-20gb will be fine no complaints.

So now 2 questions pops to one's mind, why is the limit so low (3-5gb) and why is the cost so high (RM60-99). The answer is simple, Money, money and money. Lets review how telecommunication companies make money.
a) Charging you for making phone calls
b) Charging you for sending SMS
c) Charging you for sending MMS
d) Charging you to make video calls
e) Charging you for Data Plans (Mobile Internet/3g services)

By allowing you to have a decent mobile internet service for a cheap price, the telcos will be losing out on chance to DRAIN your cash. Why would you using SMS, when you can easily Instant-Message your friend, why would you make calls (voice or video) using their expensive service when you can use free stuff like Skype or Google Voice (if both people have the service, the call is free, Skype and Google Voice only charges you for making calls to regular numbers/ people not on their service). Telcos will becoming the next Internet Service Providers, they provide the service but we will be using other people's programs/service (just like what you do on a regular computer, I mean how many people use their default ISP's email, most will use GMail or Hotmail).

This is something all MAJOR telecommunication companies want to avoid. They are afraid that their old business model than they have invested in will die out and they will do ANYTHING to keep it from happening. Do you really think they care about making the user's happy? Everyone of them just wants to make money.

Android Market in Malaysia

, , , ...

For the past few months I been trying to push (of course not much success) the issue of the Android Marketplace exclusion from Malaysia. Yea there is so many topics in this very forum about how the phone is broken or not complete without the marketplace. I taught I will highlight what is going on, just so most people will get the idea what is actually happening.

Disclaimer, I am not bashing Google, and other companies just for fun. In fact I hope they can improve for the benefits of all the users.

Thread Title: Android Market in Malaysia
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Andr...5a83d524b&hl=en

Basically, someone ask when it is available on 6/23/09 and Google's response was they dont support Malaysia.

Thread Title: When will Android Market be available in Malaysia and why is google limiting access to the market so severly?
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Andr...509b9a2c6&hl=en

Here we see, people complaining Google and HTC is pushing the blame to each other, and some even said it is our local government's fault.

Just search around the forum for with the keywords "Malaysia" and you can see tons of speculations about this problems.

Now I will provide the Official Reasoning (or what looks like legit so far) on why this is happening.
First thing is you must understand the Malaysian Handphone market is way different that those from UK and USA, in those two countries when people look to buy a phone they will go their operators (Vodafone, AT&T, Verizon, Rogers, T-Mobile, Orange, etc) to get a discounted phone with a contract (most likely 12-24months). Yes, recently this thread has been getting popular in Malaysia too, thanks to the introduction of Blackberry and Iphone handsets, but majority of the Malaysian public buys Handphones from Handphone shops, and not telcos (Maxis, Digi, Celcom, U-mobile). Basically point is we are opposite of UK and USA. (another reasoning is because we use 100% GSM, hence why we do this, since CDMA technology will ensure you most likely get a phone from your telco)

If you actually talk to Google Employee's they will tell you to get Android Marketplace in Malaysia. both the Phone Maker (In Malaysia's case most-likely HTC or Samsung) and the Telco providing the phone must be part of the OpenHandSet Alliance. ( List of members can be seen here. http://www.openhandsetalliance.com/oha_members.html ).

Some response I got from Google is saying that the telco I am using is choosing not to include the Android Marketplace with my phone. :stars: Which is confusing since I didnt buy a phone from my Telco (in my case Maxis-My). So basically, if our telcos in Malaysia dont want join OHA, we are screwed not to get Android Marketplace at all. As you can check list of countries where Android Marketplace (Full Free + Paid) is available has both the Phone Maker + Telcos representing them. So now unless anyone here got any idea how to push Maxis, Digi, etc etc to joining the OSA and help to push for Android marketplace we wont be seeing it for a very long long long time. According to Google, they give 30% profits from Paid Apps to the Telco's anyways so I dont see a disadvantage for our local telcos, I mean they are getting more money.

But then we come to another problem, Google expects that the Telco's version of the Android Marketplace must be in a Firmware customized by the Telco itself. Which I doubt any local telco wants to do it. :w So now even I am lost what to do.

Another reason Google Claims is because of Copy-protection, the currect marketplace (paid one) copy-protection can be by-passed by root users using a bug. Basically if your friend buy's a paid app you can take it from him and use it. Which is ironically funny, since almost everyone I know with an Android Phone in Malaysia is currently with custom firmware (rooted) and some even have those paid apps installed free of charge. This supposed to stop the piracy, but it looks like encouraging it.

I just hope this brief explanation helps to highlight what is going on. If you feel I am wrong, please by all means do correct me. I am only repeating what I get from Emails from HTC and Google and also the Android help forums. I myself now being a long time Android Fan/ evangelist am trying desperately to love the operating system but it is getting harder day by day due to Google's way of doing business.

P.S. : Even-Though Android is partially Open-Source (it is not full due to the Apache License for most part), stuff like the Android marketplace is closed-source and belongs to Google. So basically when we install those custom firmwares we are actually doing something illegal. :hyper: (Remember 1 year ago few custom roms was forced to be taken down due to containing GoogleApps)

EDIT: By the way, Malaysia not only one with this problem. Even my friends from Sweden and Finland all having the EXACT same problem as us with the telcos. Specially Finland since they support Nokia there, and dont buy from telcos (unless Iphone of course).

Also, here is something funny, check out this Swedish developer that I know. If you see his topic he opened you will be wondering if Google really cares. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Andr...fcd4b4140&hl=en
