2009, Free, FOSS, Open Source
Last year was a super good year for most Linux and Open Source news (well in my opinion anyways). So many things related to Open Source or even Linux occurred.
Android Gains OEMs - Many manufacturers example Motorola abbadon their windows mobile lines of phones for Android (
http://phandroid.com/manufacturers/ ), tons of Android phones have been announced or even out (
http://phandroid.com/phones/ ). Some e-books have announced to be powered by Android.
Dells gets into Handphone Market - Dell one of the world's largest computer markers have jumped into the smartphone market and chooses Android as their OS
Acer gets into Handphone Market - Same as Dell
Google announces Chrome OS (and the Chrominum OS project) - Google, has finally went into the Operating System market and coming up with a totally new OS which is of course open source and is Linux.
E-book readers Powered by Linux - Many ebook readers have been announced and guess what? Most of them run on Linux
Symbian goes Open Source - Finally Symbian frees their source code for their famous mobile OS
Nokia releases Meamo 5 - Beside releasing a debian-base OS for their flagship the N900, their first internet tablet which also works as a Phone, they have announced that all future high end phones will be Maemo. Maemo is a Linux OS too.
Nokia markets QT - Finally nokia is pushing QT and allows multiplatform development.
Android upgrades so quickly - From 1.6 to 2.0 and finally 2.1, all in 1 year. Wow that sure was fast development.
Open source and Free Web Browsers gain Market Share - Internet Explorer finally starts LOSING market share, and it is ALOT. Google Chrome, Safari, Opera and Firefox all gained market share. ( 1 out of 4 internet users now use Firefox, as firefox is 25% market share now )
White House website now runs on Linux + Drupal - As it says
Palm release WebOS - A Linux base mobile OS for all future palm phones.
Motorola releases the DROID - Heavy promotion by Verizon and a great device from Motorola.

Open Pandora, Handhelds, Open Source, ODROID
Hey check out these 2 future Open Source Handhelds.
The ODROID
- Basically an Android powered Device but acts more like a PSP
http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/29/android-based-odroid-handheld-available-for-pre-order/They already got the Developer's Version
http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/11/odroid-the-android-gaming-handheld-now-shipping-to-android-gam/It is abit expensive around 349 USD (or around 1.3k RM) but for developer's the risk may be worth it since you can easily port over your applications/games to other android devices if the ODROID failes.
Second is
OpenPandora

Linux, FOSS, Microsoft, Open Source
...
Technology is technology, this is what I believe. I normally like to give credit where credit is due and also bash whatever needs bashing. I prefer to be honest about stuff like this than lie about it just to promote a certain product. At one point of time, I used to attend tons of Microsoft events (close source) and also tons of Open Source events (FOSS and other related stuff). I use to check out what both sides have to offer, even at certain open source events, lets take example the Malaysian Open Source conference at Berjaya Times Square which was sponsored by Microsoft, Novell, Google and Red Hat. At this particular event I was quite shock to see Microsoft was there, Microsoft at an Open Source event? This is weird. Well they were actually just giving away their windows 7 Release Candidate (nothing wrong, since they sponsored) and also showed that now PHP can be hosted on Windows server too (again nothing wrong, just showing their additional feature of their product).
What I didnt notice that I was being gulled (By Microsoft people, I wont mention names) into thinking that Microsoft also supports open source and they are all for interoperability. I started adding some Microsoft friends to my Facebook/Twitter. But that was my biggest Mistake, everytime I post something related to stuff on open source or other software which is Anti-MS, they get angry. Example if I say Opera is better then Internet Explorer, they will get angry, or if I post a bug that something they new Windows 7 cannot do or has a bug, they will get angry. I even got a call from one of my friends saying I am causing a lot of trouble online, when all the time these people making it seems like they are the victims that FOSS people make fun of them (Microsoft). Now I realize that Microsoft thinks they are the best at every product they own and are not really into interoperability, they just into making money.
I rather be neutral, I dont see the need to promote a product if it sucks. I am also utterly ashamed with myself, as my Microsoft friend requested me to present about IE8 (Slides below) at a Microsoft Innovation day event. I dont mind presenting just on IE8, but what I had to do was lie, and make it seem like IE8 is the best browser out there when deep down it is not. I also notice that Microsoft love taking pot shots at Firefox only.
Presentation Slides:
http://files.myopera.com/Zentarien/files/Developer’s%20New%20Best%20Friend.pdf
I also noticed that even though my friends from Microsoft claimed that Microsoft is neutral they are not, they are just a company interested in making money and keep thinking they are the best at everything they do. Thankfully, Microsoft really sucks when it comes to the internet.
Also, dont get the wrong idea, I am not saying to go use Linux and avoid Microsoft completely, I am just saying they are not the so call good company I believe them to be. This is from my experience.
