What does a ninja mean

Sensei," I once asked my Teacher, "What does 'NINJA' mean?"

"It means human," he replied.

" Human?" I asked. " I thought it meant 'silent one' or something like that."

"The literal translation may be something like that, but being Ninja means to be a Human Being.

"And, what does that mean?" I continued.

He leaned very close and whispered to me, "It means when you have the enemy at your mercy, you don't kill him. There are lots of people, but only a few human beings. You must seek them out and cultivate them, for certainly you will need them in this life or the next."

"Is that what you meant when you told me that an enemy was merely a reflection of my Self and that if I hurt him I only hurt myself?"

"Yes," he replied.

"Then how can I know who the enemy is?"

"Because he kills without mercy or cause. A Hunter kills to eat, to survive. It is the great paradox of the universe that life feeds on life. The Hunter has a covenant with the Prey, he knows that as the animal sacrifices his life so that the Hunter may live, one day the Hunter will die and return to the Earth and nourish the soil and become grass that will grow and be eaten by other animals so that they, in their turn, may survive. The true Hunter does not slaughter the herd. He selects a few and manages the population. This is called Husbandry. Too many deer and they all starve or become diseased. The Enemy kills for power, for pleasure, for material gain that is useless on any other level of existence. This is the Lesson of the Temporal Plane. The Ninja, a Human in the act of Being on this temporal plane, knows this. So he never fights unless he means to kill. Then he brings the enemy back to life. So that he may continue his journey of self-discovery, having learned the Lesson of Humility."

"Should I then, armed with this power to kill and restore life, to penetrate anywhere unseen, and knowledge of Self, seek to enlighten those who would impose their will on others through force?"

"By using the Force against them?" He asked me.

"Yes."

"No." He said flatly.

"As a Ninja, you cannot use the Force to change to world to make it as YOU think it should be. Good and evil exist as naturally counter-balancing forces, they are merely two sides of the same coin, tampering with them upsets the balance of the Universe. Do not seek out evil, it is all around you and will confront you often. It is a measure of your character how you respond to it. Ninja seek only to be of service to others, to cultivate their inner nature. They are protected by the Armor of Righteousness. But, they never 'test' it, or themselves. Life is the test."

"How then," I asked, "Should I act as a Human Being?"

"Be kind. The Mood of the Warrior is waiting. Waiting for the Enemy to appear. For that is what moves his Will, and provides the opportunity to set a good example for all."

"But, how will I know if I can win?"

"The Ultimate Principle of Combat is the yield to the superior force and overcome it by its own momentum. He who strikes first sets in motion the pattern of his own destruction. Thus the Ninja uses invisibility to demonstrate the Principles of Self Defense. Never take a hit you don't have to, never strike until there is an opening, when there is an opening, strike decisively and win with one punch. This is the Way of the Masters. It requires intelligence, understanding the enemy, and your Self. Winning and losing are not important. The Ninja prevails."

"Thus, the Force can only be used to establish, maintain, or restore good order. You cannot feel it, you cannot 'test' it, but when needed, it will, manifest through you because you live in harmony with it. It is developed through the cultivation of Qi, the electromagnetic Force that flows through and around and within all things. You are part of it and it you, as are ordinary People. That is why every religion throughout the history of Man has taught the Golden Rule. Those that do not teach it are not true religions. The Enemy does not know it, yet he acts upon it without fail. Seeking to harm others demonstrates that what he wants is for someone to harm him. Just as a child seeks direction with experimental attention seeking behavior, the adult seeks attention for his self doubt and lack of confidence by seeking to use force to impose his Will. Since this cannot be done, he creates the openings, mental and physical, that permit the Ninja to prevail against him. That is the Nature of things. Thus, the Human enjoys his life, even the battles, and has no fear of failure, for he knows that all things are temporal and that what will happen in one's life is already written in the pattern of the Universe. But, he must choose to be there. Thus, Free Will and Fate act hand in hand."

"So, Sensei," I asked. "If I choose a path that takes me into harm's way, it is permissible to kill the enemy?"

"No. The Enemy kills himself, that is a choice he makes. The Ninja brings him back to a better life, or sets such an example that the Enemy realizes his own imbalance and discovers it for himself and does no harm. No man is the master of another, unless the other allows it. But, all should act for the common good, that is the nature of civilization."

"So, if I choose to be a soldier and go to war, I may encounter men of the other side who have also chosen that Path and if we fight, one of us may die. But, that is our choice?"

"Yes."

"What then are the causes that we are justified in fighting for?"

"There is no justification for the taking of a human life."

"What about executing a killer for his crimes?"

"The murderer justifies his actions by pointing to a litany of injustices committed against him. He feels that he is alone and powerless and that everyone is his enemy. This is not so. He makes himself the enemy of the tribe by his inappropriate response to the injustices he has endured. Life is not easy, those it cannot break it kills. Nor should one forgive crimes committed against him and continue to be victimized. If possible, he should learn from them and avoid them in the future. Nor should he be tricked into sacrificing his life for a cause or forced to fight for a prince who never risks his own life. He must be intelligent enough to know that the cause is just from his own experience. He must act to secure the common welfare of all. If he is attacked, he is justified in defending himself. The Ninja, however, knowing that he can and will prevail, uses no more Force than is needed. Executing a murderer is not justified, but it is sometimes necessary for the public good. Even a pack of wolves will drive off a mad dog. If he cannot be driven away, and find his death elsewhere, then they will kill it. The rat does not steal, the cat does not murder. Each acts according to his nature. So too, it is with Man."

"War is merely the reflection of the chaos associated with Change. The temperature of boiling water and steam are both 100 degrees Centigrade. But, there is a difference of only a few Calories of heat that mark the threshold between them. So too, is life and death and the cycle of the Universe. Things come and go. Yin and Yang strive for Balance. When you encounter the forces of Evil, do your worst. The only thing good about a war is its ending. The sooner the better. That is why it is important to win with one punch, to strike decisively and effectively against the source of the conflict, rather than its tentacles."

"This is where the power of Invisibility comes in?" I interrogated further.

"Yes, one Human in the right place at the right time can affect the course of history, but only within the confines of the Tapestry or Life, the Web of the Universe. Not by trying to change the world single-handed, simply by tipping the balance, by making ripples upon the pond, if he but chooses to be there. This is the power of invisible action, that it is so subtle in goes unnoticed, but its effect is profound. It is said that if a man went back in time and killed a single butterfly, the entire history of the world would be different. So too, it is with every act. Ninja know this. Thus they strive to move in harmony with Nature. The wind may come from behind and assist you in your journey, it may come from the side and try to unbalance you, and it may come from the front so that you must fight it. But it does not change the Path. Nor the intent of the Seeker."

"Being able to blend in and move without notice is part of invisibility then?"

"Yes, in whatever land you may travel observe the customs and laws of the people there that you may come to know them and learn from them, and they about you. But, remember always that you are Human. That you will commit no act that will harm another person, nor by inaction will you allow harm to come to another."

"Doesn't that contradict the act of striking the enemy?"

"There are five ways to deal with violence. Being Human doesn't mean you will never be called upon to fight, nor that you shouldn't or can't enjoy fighting. What you must not enjoy is hurting people. A Warrior is sometimes forced to kill an evil person in order to protect the innocent. He is not expected to enjoy it. He does it because it must be done. One cannot save all the stray dogs in the world, but if you save one you have accomplished much. And when the war is over, he returns to his life. A true Warrior has few opportunities to demonstrate his skill. A Hunter must hunt every day. A Farmer's work is never done."

"If a man hits you with a stick, you can endure and suffer a beating; you can run away; you can fight back and injure him; you can take the stick away from him; or you can set such an example of kindness and compassion that he is powerless to attack you before he even thinks of it. How many fights have been stopped by the appearance of a priest of any religion or a warrior with his sword in his belt who speaks a calming or commanding word? Who would strike such a man? It is not a matter of any theology, doctrine, swearing an oath, or adhering to any specific code of conduct. It is a matter of demeanor and quiet confidence and knowing what is right. This is inherent in all people, but not all become Human Beings."

"Why?"

"Because they have lost the relaxation of play. They have been taught and trained and conditioned to work, to suppress their creativity, to lose the joy of life and simply exist and follow blindly the whims of self-elected princes. Some are benevolent and wise and rule kingdoms of peace and prosperity. Others are sinister and cruel and rule by fear. Neither is worthwhile. Freedom is the key. Freedom to choose, even if it is the wrong choice. If you never make a mistake, you aren't doing enough. If you don't learn from them, you must try harder. The spark of greatness lives in everyone, but it is not kindled into the fire of the Will by demeaning rules and regulations. Rather by encouragement and guidance is it cultivated and allowed to flourish. Human Beings know this, thus they have the power of joyous play. Everything is fun for them, even a battle for life and death. They see work that must be done as a religious experience. To be absorbed in minute detail and pressed into the Memory like the pages of a diary. To them the boring and routine is a meditation. Every sunrise is a rebirth and every sunset a tapestry. They see the world as a child, amazed and entertained by all that occurs and is experienced. Every child is a wonder and a joy to behold, until they are turned into adults by being told what they must and may not do. If they are unfortunate, at some point they are told they must grow up and never be a child again. Usually by others who had this inflicted upon themselves previously and believed it, and can no longer relax through play themselves. But, like all things, that injunction is not absolute or permanent. Nor does a Human require permission to permit himself to play and enjoy life from time to time. When you were a child, you ran like a child, simply for the joy of doing it, and it felt good. That is the true magic, Imagination. You didn't worry about how far you went, how fast your heart was beating, what you were wearing. That takes all the fun out of it. Growing up doesn't mean you can never be child again. It just means that you must now balance that with responsibility and duty."

"Thus, if you want to make yourself feel good like that again, run as you did when you were a child. When you face the Enemy see it as an opportunity to shine, to prevail. No matter how much you practice, you can never be ready enough, practicing is just fun and healthy. When you face the Enemy you cannot anticipate his attack, you cannot know if his intent is to kill or simply unbalance you, you cannot control him at all. The only thing you can control, if you are skilled, is your Self. When he moves yield and let him be overcome by his own aggression. That is the lesson he is seeking. That is why he attacked you, however he may have come to choose to be in that place at that time, or you. Help him up and let him try again. Do this as long as it takes for him to realize the futility of it and seek another solution, even to exhaustion. In that way he learns what you already know, that all life is precious, nor can any be replaced."

"This is the Great Game of Life."

"So, if I choose not to go to the battlefield, what should I do?"

"Be ready. If the opportunity to tip the balance presents itself to you, decide then whether to intervene, knowing that you cannot fail because you are in harmony with the Universe, and choose which of the five courses you will employ at that time. You can only do what you did at any given moment, you cannot anticipate every moment to come, you must live spontaneously. If you do unto others as you would have done unto yourself and know that others, aware of it or not, are demonstrating how they wish to be treated by their actions as well, peace and harmony will prevail through courtesy. If you make, first do no harm, your Law, you will never strike the first blow and will be known as a man of peace who can fight like ten tigers, a Human in the act of Being. There is no greater rank than this."

I remain,

The code

The Mystic Knighthood Code

Humility in service to Strength
Strength in service to Justice
Justice in service to Compassion
Compassion in service to Humility

These are the principles upon which our code is built.
All Novice Members should study the Code.
All Knights are expected to act according to the Code.

Our "Code" is a guideline rather than an actual restrictive rule set. Each member is encouraged to apply the virtuous principles of the code according to his/her own interpretation, and to remain open-minded to other interpretation possibilities. You are encouraged to progressively integrate the “Code” in your daily behavior.

Without Humility, we will restrict our growth in strength. Regardless of whatever level of strength we believe we may have achieved, we will not recognize it in any form when one is lacking Humility. Humility teaches us that no matter how great the man (or woman) they are still just one person. They still rely on others in some degree. No matter how wonderful a person is, no matter how powerful, they are no greater than any other of our brothers and sisters. When one cultivates the virtue of Humility, they can come to understand their own strengths and weaknesses. This will allow them to have a better understanding of the roles they can play in the Knighthood, but mostly throughout their daily lives. When one is ignorant of their own weaknesses they are robbing themselves of strength by making their weakness even more vulnerable. Through understanding Humility, one can come to understand and gain access to the true reservoirs of strength that can be made available to them.

Strength follows, being nurtured by Humility. Strength is the foundation of power. It allows one to act. When one lacks strength of character, of body, or heart, all of their works will be weak. When one is strong, everything of their creation, every word and deed will emanate with power. They will have stability and focus. Strength is the tool of Justice. When one acts in service to justice without strength, their action will be weak, and unable to succeed, often causing more harm than good. When you choose to walk the path of Justice, you must cultivate Strength. Each day add to it, little by little. Should you be called upon to serve Justice, you must not waver, and need to be able to act on the spot. Justice served weakly is a disservice to not only yourself, but the community at large. Strength can be manifested in the power of your speech, by the cunning of your mind, in the overcoming of your fears, in the flex of your muscle. Strength is the virtue that allows one to act. Strength allows free-will.

Justice rules the heart of a Knight. Born of Strength, you are in service to something greater than yourself. You seek to better the community, even the world, with the power of your actions. Not everyone is strong. To serve Justice, one needs to understand this. You seek to bring calm to the situation, not chaos. By speaking out against tyranny, by alerting authorities of wrong doing, you are serving Justice. Justice serves Compassion. The Code revolves around this fact. You must be able to look through the eyes of others. If you would not like to endure what others are being forced to, you should take appropriate action to help alleviate the situation. Above all, you need to use your common sense. If you act too boldly to serve Justice, your efforts can be twisted to further enslave and defeat the innocent. Actions should only be as bold as you are strong. Know your weakness. Justice towards one-self is free-will. Towards others, it is respecting their choices, even if you don't agree.

Justice is driven by Compassion. Compassion is a loving understanding of the human experience. It shows the lessons hidden behind what seems to be pain. Compassion sheds light on anger and fear. Without understanding Compassion, the other virtues fall apart. Without Compassion, one will misinterpret Justice and blind his own heart. One needs to understand the point of view of all involved, and act accordingly. This is the Compassion that fuels the fires of our Knighthood. Things are often not as cut and dry as they may appear at first. It takes a constant development of Compassion, with unconditional love, to see without bias. Through the development of Compassion, we understand how to serve Justice, and how to apply our Strength. Compassion, as great and powerful as it is, serves Humility, and we come full circle. One will never have a complete understanding of every situation. You will never be done learning about Compassion. You’re understanding won’t ever be complete. This returns us to Humility. We need to be patient and kind with ourselves, Compassionate, and understand that we still have more to learn. We still have more to do. The path of those who wish to become Knights can be difficult at times, for we are never done. We must constantly polish our character, build our Strength, serve Justice, develop Compassion, and have enough Humility to accept that we alone cannot save the world, that we too have our own flaws and weaknesses.

Virtuous Behavior

These are the virtues our Code is based around. There are still more qualities for us to develop to reach a better understanding of these. Each virtue that you develop will bring more power into your life. Each virtue can be developed infinitely. We ask that you work towards the development of each of these over time.

The most powerful and direct links to power are the development of virtues. Your energy bodies continuously manifest according to the type of person you are. When you develop virtues, your energy system is more powerful than if you were continuously doing rituals and spiritual practices. With virtues developed, it is like if you where in a continuous state of ritual, of meditation, of contemplation of the beauty of the world. With virtues, you are always in a state of power towards the universe, and the universe obeys to those who have developed the means to command it.

Although there are many virtues, here is a brief description of seven major virtues that have a direct implication with the seven aspects of our evolution.

Temperance

Do not give in to anger. Do not give in to judgment. Be compassionate. Endure the pressure when it can help others discover Love. Smile and be happy of what life has given you. Accept your role in the universe, and work to discover it. Do not be susceptible. Do not take anything personally. Be careful of your words when you answer back to some offense. When people offend you, tell them you are sorry if you have offended them.

Justice

Integrity, honesty, truth. Act in ways you know are right. Do your best to respect the human laws of your country. Over that, do what you think is best according to the laws of the universe. It can take some time to understand the laws of the universe, but deep within, all of us know what is right or wrong. Do not take decisions that would lead you to abuse. Do not let yourself abuse by anyone. Accept to earn less when it is right to do so, and defend your right to profit when it is right to do so.

Strength

Move! Do not stop unless it is necessary. Determine yourself to peaceful actions. Make a plan and deploy the necessary energy to accomplish it. Do some physical exercises to enhance your physical strength. Then, transpose the feeling of strength to a higher level, with analogy as a tool. This will help you understand the mystic symbolism of inner strength, of self-empowerment.

Faith

The universe, the great Love of the universe, will take care of you. Know that you are in a classroom, in an experience to learn to master yourself. Realize all of your projects with the assistance of God. Take care of the matters of God, and God will take care of your human matters. God is without shape, without name, without any definite identity. He is the absolute truth of the universe, and he loves you. You are never alone. Thus, all will be fine.

Charity

Give to others without any return. Do not expect recognition or payback. Give without any expectation. Do not ruin yourself. Do not give your physical means of subsistence; It would not be prudent. Give your time, give compassion, take care of others, and take care of yourself in the process. Give love only to give love. Give yourself the opportunity to love others more than you have done yesterday. Take care of your heart in the process, and do not play the “savior” game.

Prudence

Think about it before you move. Develop trust, and develop a sense of responsibility. Make sure of what you are doing. Be careful with any detail. Do not think that nothing will go wrong, take care of it personally. Study, set everything in place, and counter verify. Then act. Do not stop because of fear; hesitation is not prudence.

Hope

A higher version of having a positive attitude, hope is a more tangible expression of faith and self-trust. It is a determination to never give in to negativity, never to play the victim of the events that compose your life. Smile, trust yourself, be positive, and know that all will be fine. It is easy to keep this attitude alive when you know, deep inside, that every event that seems negative is only a lesson to go thru, an experience of knowledge sent by your higher consciousness.

Guest membership is free, and becoming an active member will allow you to progress in the knighthood and access higher level training material as you progress.Awake and aware, I search my soul and lay it bare.
On my path there are obstacles over which I might tumble.
But through human frailty, with human capability, I rise in courage rare.
In my search I may falter and stumble, but through it all I remain humble.
Through valley and over peak I travel, sheathed in the cloak of humility I wear.

To survive the falls and to reach the heights, I strive each day to increase my might.
I train my body; I discipline my mind, in hopes of courage and strength to find.
I discipline my body and train my mind and each day I work to do what’s right.
Each day I open my heart and offer myself in service to all mankind.
For I have the strength of body and mind and the courage of heart to carry on the fight.

Centered in humility, on the strength of my convictions I stand tall.
For those less fortunate and those oppressed, I take my stand.
Though the fight is hard and the fight long and in the end I might fall.
For those without and those in need, I toe the line and lend a hand.
I’ll take my stand; I’ll take the fall, because I believe in liberty and justice for all.

I have the tools at hand to live life in such a fashion.
I have the will to talk the talk and walk the walk in the company of light.
I aim to live a life of impeccability with a warrior’s strength and passion.
To weather any storm and shine my light like a beacon through the night.
My gift to my fellow man is understanding and compassion.

Aware and awake, my soul is turned towards the light.
Striving and questing for the truth that lies at the crowned heart’s core.
I will give of body, mind, and heart, in service right.
I know that something greater than self is guiding me to that distant shore.
Humility, Strength, Justice, and Compassion, are the arms and armor of the Mystic Knight.

- Anthony S Griffin, Daisan Shinzen, Knight Protector

As I walk the path in my humble ways,
There’s strength in each decision and step that I take,
For justice is my shield and great is my faith,
That compassion is my companion day by day.

Humility is called forth to light the mind,
Strong is the will for obstacles to be overcomed,
Being just is more than a quality for it’s the sign,
That a compassionated heart within me you will find.

Humility, Strength, Justice, Compassion is the start,
Are all qualities and more for the Truth is our light,
These are my vows just as my sword is as sharp,
For I Am a Mystic Knight of the Crowned Heart!

- Arnold D. Vargas, Kongo Shugenja, Knight Priest

…it was dark.
I was a man, just a little ordinary man.

Heavy clouds upon the earth, there was rain, there was snow.
I was frightened, I was lonely, I was lost.
I dropped down on my knees…
I bound my fingers together and, with all my will left, deep from my heart, I prayed:

Lord the Sun, Lord the Great Spirit, please, bring me light, give me life…
A lightning…a thunder hit me.
But not shock, not pain… just a current of love… and a dream?
I was a blazing tiger now, how strong and fierce,
I was roaring, I was hunting full of life,
I was playing full of joy.

And then I became an eagle,
flying up and down in the sky…
how free… no bonds, no chains…
A ladder appeared in front of me… A rainbow… pointing up to the sun…
I crossed the colored steps, I reached the sun… I became the LIGHT

Making progress is the most important part. Whatever level of strength, competence or spiritual depth you have acquired yet is of no importance. The main goal of walking the Mystic Knight’s path is to start at the level you are, and practice yourself at becoming better. You are the one who selects how fast you will travel the path, and far you will go.

The Mission of the Mystic Knighthood

On the path of self-mastery, one might need guidance and resources. The Mystic Knighthood is devoted to this, offering training to raise one's level of physical prowess, mental clarity, and spiritual depth. We are here to guide you on this path, and offer fellowship when you hit difficult areas in your life. Guided by the virtuous principles of our sacred code, we live our lives for the betterment of the community. The Mystic Knighthood exists to provide guidance to those engaged in their self-development, providing the opportunity to help you develop yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually, all at one place. Our goal is to serve as shining examples of personal achievement, living our lives in service to the world around us. We are not a cult, religion, or sect. We are a simple community that provide guidance, and a platform to share with other who seek the same goals.

Training Areas

Body

The body of a Mystic Knight is his temple, his home. It must be cared for with nutritious foods and exercises to keep it healthy. In this section, we will present guidelines to good nutrition and basic bodybuilding exercises.

Mind

It is suggested to practice your cunning either by studying various subjects, or by playing mind games. The more you study, the more you will become knowledgeable in many fields, either in wisdom or technical application.

Spirit

Spiritual self-development is the key to becoming a Mystic Knight. In time, it will help you develop extra-sensory perception, but first, it will set the grounds for spiritual improvement. Developing your spirituality will bring concentration, self-trust, and personal empowerment.
Martial Arts

The practice of martial arts is the ultimate tool to assist in the integration of all other aspects of becoming a Mystic Knight. It will work on your body, mind and spirit. Any kind of martial art can be practiced. It is recommended you find a school near you.

Training Plan Outline

All knights have to go thru all the aspects of the training plan, from guest to knight, in the areas of body, mind and spirit (except for special handicap cases). All specialization programs are offered to all knights, but we allow the recognition of one specialization per year, on a successful evaluation.
