INTRODUCTION OF Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has been one of the poorest nations of the world since its coming into existence in 1971. In 1993, Bangladesh ranked 147 out of 173 countries in the UNDP Human Development index, which is a reflection of low life expectancy, low educational attainment and low GDP per capita. With a per Capita income of little over US $ 210, most of 119 million Bangladeshi live in miserable poverty within the area of 56,977 sq. miles. Bangladesh is one of the most density-populated countries in the world. Over 85% of the total population live in the rural areas of which 80% depend on agriculture, which is characterizes by small and marginal farming. More than 40% of the rural people are land less and 60% of the population suffers from malnutrition because 80% people live below the internationally recognized poverty line in terms of minimum caloric requirement. Bangladesh is a disaster prone country. Natural disasters and calamaties like severe cyclone, tornado, flood, tidal surge, storm, land erosion, drought occur almost every year plunging the country into serious economic, social, educational, industrial, environmental and overall developmental crisis.

EDUCATION PROGRAM
“Illiteracy is a curse”. Now a days this proverb has been proved all over the world .For all types of development education acts like medicine. For eliminating poverty and economical development there is no alternative of education. That is why education is called the backbone of a nation. In order to eradicate the curse of illiteracy of rural people AAAD Bangladesh has executed various programs such as Mother support program, Mother Child education program, Functional Adult Literacy program, Program for Library Studies, etc.
1. Mother Support Program:
The aim of the Mother Support Program is to sensitize mothers on subjects such as children’s developments, health, nutrition, care and creative play activities, discipline, mother-child interaction, communication expressing feeling and the needs of the mother. The program is implemented in the form of group discussion, lead by the facilitators who are trained by AAAD. AAAD has decided to implement the program as a 24-week program. The goal of the program is to create changes in the behavior of the participants and to establish a social support network amongst the participants. The main contents of the programs are given below:
• Social development.
• Emotional developments.
• Physical developments.
• Child development and the role of family.
• Importances of play and impact on development.
• Negative discipline methods.
• Listening.
• Discipline methods.
• Generalization.
• Toilet training.
• Health & Care.
• Preventing accidents.
• Problem behavior.
• Studying habits.
• Parent – school cooperation.
2. Mother Child education Program (MOCEP):
It is every child’s right to live and develop to his or her full prospective. In this regard AAAD Bangladesh always remember the great speech of Napoleon Bonaparte, “Give me good mother, I will give you a good nation”. So it is universal that to make a good generation the importance of a good mother has known no bounds.
AAAD has realized that, as the child’s development is most rapid in early ages, so the environment of the child is particularly significant in meeting his or her developmental needs. However, in some instances parents may need support to meet the developmental needs of their children.
AAAD thinks that in Bangladesh it clearly visible that the cognitive, social, emotional and physical development of children living in disadvantaged socio-economic environment can be lower than their peers.
The contents of Mother – Child Education program are as follows:
Mother child education program (MOCEP):
This program consists of three components:
• Mother support program
• Cognitive training program
• Reproductive health & family planning program.
Each component includes educational materials, which are distributed to the mother and child free of charge.
3. Functional Adult Literacy program:
The biggest number of illiteracy of Bangladesh is observed in rural areas and among them women are in great number. Being deprived of their fundamental education rights, they cannot take part in many daily activities or meet their basic social needs. There are many Government and non-Government organization in Bangladesh who could not be able to make free the nation from the curse of illiteracy. But AAAD has got the unique idea implementing its functional adult literacy program.
AAAD is continuing its adult literacy program using the students of high school and college, the trained teachers and unemployed educated people. All the teachers are being trained by the experts of AAAD.
Why this program is important?
This program is important because of many reasons. Firstly, without having literacy the large number of population will be deprived to take part in development activities. Secondly lack of literacy the parents will not be able to guide their children properly and as a result the country could lose many genius. Thirdly lack of literacy the major poor part of population could never be able to lead a normal life.
‘Education for All’, keeping this slogan on the focus, TMSS carries out motivational activities through Group Discussions, using Festoons, Leaflets, Miking, banners, etc. In addition, publication of different books leaflets, reports, handout, brochure, etc. are being published time to time.
4. Program for Library Studies:
AAAD Bangladesh is maintaining a good process of library work for all classes of people, especially for those who have got light of education by AAAD. There is a big library established in rural area by AAAD Bangladesh to fulfill the demand of the thirst of knowledge of all typed people. The name of the Library is “Innatun-Nesa Public Library (INPL)”. The library has another type of support services to promote community peoples’ knowledge through reading Books & News Paper.
AGRICULTURE PROGRAM
AAAD Bangladesh has been established in 1999 dreaming the dream of a positive life style of rural distress people. For this AAAD Bangladesh initiated Agricultural program to provide privileges among those who are helpless. AAAD Bangladesh is conscious enough of taking care to Query Redressal Service, which will be helpful for providing relevant information to the farming community whenever needed. AAAD Bangladesh is working to promote networking of farmers belonging to similar sectoral villages and helping the farmers with their production and process-related activities in agriculture. It also foster producer-purchaser linkages by providing market places for the farmers to sell their produced items to the appropriate purchaser at the appropriate price.
Keeping all the above in mind AAAD Bangladesh has been implementing a good number of programs on Agriculture in its working areas, which are mentioned below in brief:
1. Crops:
AAAD Bangladesh has taken program for the overall development of cropping in its project area. Bangladesh has got a good fertile land but the back dated cultivating system is working as a dam on the way of development. So AAAD Bangladesh is giving emphasis in this regard to transform the traditional cultivation system into crop – diversification. To reduce the food insufficiency it is needed to cultivate multiple – Crop in the same field in a season.
To produce bumper crops the farmers need well seeds and AAAD Bangladesh is providing various equipments to the poor farmers for seed processing.
Production and processing of crop are the important tasks in the field of Agriculture. For this AAAD Bangladesh initiated some systems for producing different types of crops and also for the preservation of the produced crops.
2. Live – Stock and Poultry:
To make the distress people economically developed AAAD Bangladesh thinks the needs of livestock and Poultry farm. The major portions of the project are being benefited directly by this project of AAAD Bangladesh. AAAD Bangladesh is providing proper guidelines to the poor distress people through training for the development of poultry farms as a profitable and sustainable occupation.
3. Nurseries and Green House:
Keeping eyes on the pollution of environment and green house affected, AAAD Bangladesh has implemented various programs for growing up nursery and for this it is working to make understand its beneficiaries about the importance of plantation.
4. Horticulture:
The importance of Horticulture is well known to the educated society but in case of rural illiterate people it is not well understandable. AAAD Bangladesh did the right work to make a good number of people understand what is horticulture and how it could help them. A large number of people are being trained by AAAD about horticulture and now they have understood that horticulture is helping them to reduce their financial crisis and mal nutrition also. It has taken various schemes for cultivating vegetables in homestead garden. It collects various foods from its own farm such as Mango, Guava, Citras and different fruits and vegetables, etc.
5. Fisheries:
There are a lot of abandoned ponds, marshes / swamps, in rural area which could be the means of good earnings of the poor farmers. A good number of people are being trained by AAAD how to activate those abandoned marshes as good fisheries for the better earning source.
6. Bio-Mass Production/ Natural Fertilizer Production:
AAAD Bangladesh has been continuing to train up its beneficiaries about the production of natural fertilizer. Now a days it has been proved that “organic fertilizer is a more environment friendly and conducive for soil quality than inorganic fertilizer”. So, AAAD has taken an initiative for training up the farmers how to produce and use eco-sustainable natural fertilizer through the Bio-mass and compost production.
Reducing HIV related stigma is also vital in the fight against HIV/AIDS. “Those who are suffering from AIDS do not want to come forward for identification of their suffering and HIV disease. So initiative should be taken so that the AIDS patients can be identified through encouraging them or by giving them facilities that are safe and empowering. And this operation should be implemented at the grass root level. Then we will all benefit,” states Syed K. Zaman.

BASIC FACTS ABOUT HIV/AIDS
What body fluids transmit HIV?
These body fluids have been proven to spread HIV:
• blood
• semen
• vaginal fluid
• breast milk
• other body fluids containing blood
These are additional body fluids that may transmit the virus that health care workers may come into contact with:
• fluid surrounding the brain and the spinal cord
• fluid surrounding bone joints
• fluid surrounding an unborn baby
The modes of HIV transmission
HIV is transmitted mostly through semen and vaginal fluids during unprotected sex without the use of condoms. Globally, most cases of sexual transmission involve men and women, although, in some developed countries homosexual activity remains the primary mode.
Beside sexual intercourse, HIV can also be transmitted during drug injection by the sharing of needles contaminated with infected blood; by unsafe transfusion, of infected blood or blood products; and from an infected woman to her baby-before birth, during birth or just after delivery.
How to avoid the HIV virus?
On can avoid HIV infection by abstaining/nonparticipation from sex, by having a monogamous sexual relationship with an uninfected partner or by practicing safer sex. Safer sex involves the correct use of a condom during each sexual encounter and also includes non-penetrative sex.
Is oral sex unsafe?
Oral sex does carry some risk of infection because infected fluids can be transmitted through the mouth especially if there are bleeding gums or tiny sore/painful somewhere in the mouth. The same is true if infected sexual fluids from a woman get into the mouth of her partner. But infection from oral sex alone seems to be very rare.
Are woman at equal risk of being infected with HIV?
Women are, in fact, more at risk of getting infected because of their increased vulnerability. In addition, their low status within the family and society further heighten/increase their vulnerability to infection. It is therefore most important that every woman has access to information about HIV/AIDS to protect herself.
How does a mother transmit HIV to her unborn child?
An HIV-infected mother can infect her child in her womb during constant exchange of her blood. The baby is more at risk if the mother has bee recently infected or is in a later stage of AIDS. Transmission can also occur at the time of birth when the baby is exposed to the mother’s blood and to some extent transmission can occur through breast milk. Transmission from an infected mother to her baby occurs in about 30 percent of cases.
Is there any risk of infection if one is physically exposed with an HIV infected person?
There are no risks involved. One may share the same telephone with other people in office or work side by side in a crowded factory with other HIV infected persons, even share the same cup of tea, but this will not expose one to the risk of contracting the virus.
Can someone get infected with HIV from mosquito bites?
No. From the start of the HIV epidemic there has been concern about HIV transmission of the virus by biting and bloodsucking insects, such as mosquitoes. However, studies conducted by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, USA (CDC) and elsewhere have shown no evidence of HIV transmission through mosquito bites or any other insects even in areas where there are many cases of AIDS and large populations of mosquitoes. Lack of such outbreak/epidemic, despite intense efforts to detect them, supports the conclusion that HIV is not transmitted by insects.
It is important to know that:
HIV is not an airborne or food-borne virus, and it does not live long outside the body. HIV can be found in the blood, semen, or vaginal fluid of an infected person.
The three main ways HIV is transmitted:
• Through having sex (anal, vaginal, or oral) with someone infected with HIV.
• Through sharing needles and syringes with someone who has HIV.
• Through exposure/contact (in the case of infants) to HIV before or during birth, or through breast-feeding.
How can one tell if he has HIV infection?
The only to know for sure if one has this virus is by taking a blood test called the “HIV Antibody Test”. Some people call it the “HIV Test” or the “AIDS Test”, even though this test alone cannot tell if one has AIDS. The HIV test can tell one if s/he has the virus and can pass it to others in the ways already described.
What are the symptoms/indicators/signs of the HIV/AIDS? (Syndrome = disease/set of symptoms)
A person infected with HIV is not likely to have any symptoms for about three to ten years. This period may be longer if the natural defense mechanism of the body is good. Although a person infected with HIV does not have any symptoms, he/she can spread the infection to others.
The symptoms of AIDS are divided into major and minor symptoms. As per the definition of AIDS given by the World Health Organization (WHO), a person is said to have AIDS if he/she at least two major signs and at least one minor sign and there is no other cause of poor immune mechanism. The term “AIDS related illness” is used when a person has some of the signs and symptoms, has antibodies to HIV in the blood but does not have two major and one minor sign.
Major Signs:
Diarrhea is very common in people with AIDS. It is normally clear and watery and may be associated with cramp-like/spasm-like pain in the abdomen and vomiting. Chronic diarrhea with excessive loss of weight is one of the important features of AIDS.
There may also be continuous fever and increased sweating at nights. Weight loss by more than 10 percent in a month’s period is also one of the signs.
Minor Signs:
Chronic/never-ending cough that does not respond to routine treatment, enlargement of the lymph nodes, fungal infection of the mouth called candidiasis, recurrent infections of herpes group of viruses.
Poor defense mechanism of the body allows several disease-causing germ to infect people with AIDS.
Tuberculosis is one of the most common opportunistic infections seen in people with AIDS. This is a bacterial infection and is normally transmitted when a person with active tuberculosis coughs or sneezes. Tuberculosis often occurs in the early stages of HIV infection. Since tuberculosis is already one of the major health problems, people with HIV infection are at a higher risk of getting it. Very often, tuberculosis is the first indication that a person has HIV infection. Although tuberculosis largely affects the lungs, it can affect other organs of the body also. People with AIDS are more likely to get infection in other organs of the body.
Special Message:
Religion can play a vital role in controlling HIV/AIDS. Every religion across the world is in favor of peace and salvation. Infringement / violation of religious rules results in unhappiness. By abiding by religious rules, we can control AIDS.
If we look at Muslim Religion, we find that having sex is prohibited without marriage. Illicit/illegal love is also restricted.
And indiscriminate/random illegal / illegitimate sex is the main reason of the spread of HIV/AIDS. So such type of sex should be stopped and follow the rules of religion to control HIV/AIDS.
The same doctrine / canon is also seen in Hindu religion where monogamy is encouraged and polygamous sexual relationship is hardly supported. If we go through the other religious scripts, we find that indiscriminate sex is forbidden.
So by stopping adultery/faithlessness/adultery, AIDS can be controlled to a great extent/level.

Self-Enterprises Development Program (SEDP)
Self – Enterprises Development Program (SEDP) is the window of development of AAAD. The organization strongly believes that development of micro and small enterprises in Bangladesh may contribute as the engine for socio-economic development of the country. So, the Program was initiated to create business opportunities for micro and small enterprises for the beneficiaries and upgrading their ability to cope with the highly competitive world of business by offering demand-driven multidimensional and integrated business development services. The objective of the program is to develop need-based small-scale enterprises for the creation of employment/self-employment of the beneficiaries for the earning of their income and improve their socio-economic condition to change their fate by their own will-force of work.
Keeping the above view in mind, AAAD has been organizing training courses on different need-based trades for its beneficiaries. AAAD Microcredit Program
The word "micro-credit" did not exist before the seventies. Now it has become a buzzword among the development practitioners. In the process, the word has been imputed to mean everything to everybody. No one now gets shocked if somebody uses the term "microcredit" to mean agricultural credit, or rural credit, or cooperative credit, or consumer credit, credit from the savings and loan associations, or from credit unions, or from money lenders. When someone claims microcredit has a thousand year history, or a hundred year history, nobody finds it as an exciting piece of historical information.
Let me suggest a broad classification of microcredit:
1. Traditional informal microcredit (such as, moneylender's credit, pawn shops, loans from friends and relatives, consumer credit in informal market, etc.)
2. Microcredit based on traditional informal groups.
3. Activity-based microcredit through conventional or specialized banks (such as, agricultural credit, livestock credit, fisheries credit, handloom credit, etc.)
4. Rural credit through specialized banks.
5. Cooperative microcredit (cooperative credit, credit union, savings and loan associations, savings banks, etc.)
6. Consumer microcredit.
7. Bank-NGO partnership based microcredit.
8. AAAD Bangladesh type microcredit or AAAD Microcredit.
9. Other types of NGO microcredit.
10. Other types of non-NGO non-collateralized microcredit.
General features of AAAD Microcredit are:
i. It promotes credit as a human right.
ii. Its mission is to help the poor families to help themselves to overcome poverty. It is targeted to the poor, particularly poor women.
iii. Most distinctive feature of AAAD Microcredit is that it is not based on any collateral, or legally enforceable contracts. It is based on "trust", not on legal procedures and system.
iv. It is offered for creating self-employment for income-generating activities and housing for the poor, as opposed to consumption.
v. It was initiated as a challenge to the conventional banking, which rejected the poor by classifying them to be "not creditworthy". As a result it rejected the basic methodology of the conventional banking and created its own methodology.
vi. It provides service at the doorstep of the poor based on the principle that the people should not go to the bank, bank should go to the people.
vii. order to obtain loans a borrower must join a group of borrowers.
viii. Loans can be received in a continuous sequence. New loan becomes available to a borrower if her previous loan is repaid.
ix. All loans are to be paid back in installments (weekly, or bi-weekly).
x. A borrower can receive simultaneously more than one loan.
xi. It comes with both obligatory and voluntary savings programmers for the borrowers.
xii. Generally these loans are given through non-profit organizations or through institutions owned primarily by the borrowers. If it is done through for-profit institutions not owned by the borrowers, efforts are made to keep the interest rate at a level, which is close to a level commensurate with sustainability of the programme rather than bringing attractive return for the investors. AAAD Micricredit's thumb-rule is to keep the interest rate as close to the market rate, prevailing in the commercial banking sector, as possible, without sacrificing sustain-ability. In fixing the interest rate market interest rate is taken as the reference rate, rather than the moneylenders' rate. Reaching the poor is its non-negotiable mission. Reaching sustainability is a directional goal. It must reach sustainability as soon as possible, so that it can expand its outreach without fund constraints
xiii. AAAD Microcredit gives high priority on building social capital. It is promoted through formation of groups and centers, developing leadership quality through annual election of group and center leaders, electing board members when the borrowers own the institution. To develop a social agenda owned by the borrowers, something similar to the "sixteen decisions", it undertakes a process of intensive discussion among the borrowers, and encourages them to take these decisions seriously and implement them. It gives special emphasis on the formation of human capital and concern for protecting environment. It monitors children's education, provides scholarships and student loans for higher education. For formation of human capital it makes efforts to bring technology, like mobile phones, solar power, and promote mechanical power to replace manual power.
AAAD Microcredit is based on the premise that the poor have skills which remain unutilized or under-utilized. It is definitely not the lack of skills, which make poor people poor. AAAD Bangladesh believes that the poor do not create the poverty; the institutions and policies, which surround them, create it. In order to eliminate poverty all we need to do is to make appropriate changes in the institutions and policies, and/or create new ones. AAAD Bangladesh believes that charity is not an answer to poverty. It only helps poverty to continue. It creates dependency and takes away individual's initiative to break through the wall of poverty. Unleashing of energy and creativity in each human being is the answer to poverty.
AAAD provide credit to the poor, women, and the illiterate in the rural and urban area, the people who pleaded that they did not know how to invest money and earn an income. AAAD develop a methodology and an institution around the financial needs of the poor, and created access to credit on reasonable term enabling the poor to build on their existing skill to earn a better income in each cycle of loans.
If donors can frame category wise microcredit policies they may overcome some of their discomforts. General policy for microcredit in its wider sense is bound to be devoid of focus and sharpness.
