Easier to find and fix security bugs

Insecurity blues: What I learned from my buggy code

Commentary--It hasn't been a good month for my code. Samba, the project I'm responsible for, has had to announce several security flaws. Unfortunately some of them were in code I wrote. I always do a large amount of soul-searching whenever that happens. There's nothing worse than finding out something you were responsible for is the cause of many thousands of people having to waste their time rolling out patches. It always makes me wonder if the time has come to give up this programming lark and end my days peacefully in management, messing up other people's code instead of creating my own.

It's very educational however to look at the causes of the flaws, and try and learn what we can from the bugs and also our reactions to them. Samba is an old program. The initial code was originally written 15 years ago. At that time, modern security problems such as integer wrap (where adding two numbers together can end up with a number smaller than both of them, due to the fixed sizes of integers that processors deal with), or heap overflow vulnerabilities (where overwriting unallocated memory on the program heap can allow a clever attacker to seize control of a program) were unheard of. We knew about buffer overruns (where reading more data into a buffer than was originally allocated for it can cause a security breach) and denial of service attacks, but 1992 was a simpler, less hostile time for network software development. Most initial deployments of Samba were on networks isolated from the main Internet, by technically advanced administrators who knew how to download the source code from the Internet.

The kind of security bugs we get now are much more sophisticated than those that were originally present in the first releases of Samba. We also treat them much more seriously than we used to. In the early days, we (or someone else examining the code) would discover a security problem, and almost immediately we made an announcement of a fixed version. Those were also the days where binary releases of Open Source/Free Software were unknown, as everyone knew how to compile from source code. At least everyone who we were interested in working with did. Our response time for security bugs was usually measured in hours (depending on the timezone of the person reporting the bug). I still remember the first attempt by someone to sabotage Samba with a zero-day exploit posted directly to our mailing list without any warning. Andrew Tridgell (the original author of Samba) was so incensed that he immediately raced to ensure the very next message on the list was the patch for the bug. He succeeded. These days we rarely get zero-day exploits posted openly to lists. The bad guys who discover exploits keep them secret for their own illicit use, and the good guys go through the currently agreed-upon best practice of sending notice to the Samba developers directly (at the mailing address security@samba.org) and work with us in coordinating the announcement of the problem and its fix.

Microsoft roping more into Longhorn Server release

With Windows Vista, Microsoft had to cut features to try to get the release out the door. With its upcoming server release, though, Microsoft is actually adding a few features.

Since it released Beta 2 of Longhorn Server in May, Microsoft has brought back a new command-line interface known as PowerShell and added several new pre-configured server "roles."

By contrast, as Microsoft tried to get Windows Vista ready for market, it had to cut several features, including PC-to-PC synchronization and the WinFS file system.

"We come to Beta 3 with all limbs intact," said Ward Ralston, a senior technical product manager in the Windows Server group. "We even added things. We're feeling really good about the development of Windows Server 'Longhorn.'"

Microsoft is hoping to publicly release Beta 3 of the product before the end of June, with the final version available in the second half of this year. This week, the company released a new interim build to some testers, a version that Ralston said is "feature complete," meaning there are not any new tricks yet to be added to the code.

But some say it is too soon for Microsoft to declare victory. Gartner analyst John Enck said that features may yet be sliced out of Longhorn, noting that such moves often happen at the last minute.

Control on costs you need to strategize the moving.

How to Make a Claim Against Your MoverHow to Make a Claim Against Your Mover

Most people find that moving eventually exceeds their budget by considerable amounts. This is because we don't pay attention to the nitty-gritty of moving. If you want to have a good control on costs you need to strategize the moving.

Here are some simple tips:

1. Never choose a mover because he is friendly or close by. Make a comparison of costs by asking for estimates from at least three movers and checking the estimates carefully to ensure there are no hidden costs.

2. Ensure that the mover does not hand over a vague agreement with a lot of convoluted terms. He must give you a guaranteed not to exceed estimate. The estimate should include details of licenses, permits, shipping costs, insurance, packing , storage and so on.

3. Don't just pack all you have. Make time to take an inventory and determine what essentials are and what sentimental things are. If you can find out how much space your new home will have and the climate of the region. Put aside emotions and decide to take only essentials. If your home is owned by you, consider renting it out partially furnished, or give away things to charity, or put into storage. The fewer the things to be moved the lower the movers bill will be.

4. Reduce the bill by packing unbreakable things yourself. Find out if this is acceptable to the mover's terms and conditions. Let the movers pack breakable and valuable items.

5. Purchase special packing boxes wholesale this will cut costs considerably. If your move is planned well in advance you could collect empty cartons to pack unbreakable items and books from the local merchant.

6. If you are moving close by you could consider handling the move yourself by using au-haul.

7. Costs can be reduced if you use old newspapers, blankets, sheets and t-shirts as packing material instead of buying bubble wrap for everything.

8. Packing tape, rope, and string should be purchased whole sale.

9. Calculate the costs of flying as against driving down and incurring expenses of overnight stay as well as food and beverage.

10. Find out whether you will get any tax relief on moving expenses and purchase of insurance.

Create a budget that includes mover's estimate, packing, travel, stay, food and beverage as well as any other expenses you can think off against each entry mark what can be avoided and what is essential. Go over your notes with a professional mover or consultant.

If you can plan on moving off season this will reduce costs but create problems like school admissions and so on if you have children moving with you. Moving off season according to moving experts cuts costs by as much as 20%. Similarly one can save money by choosing to move in the middle of the month rather than beginning or end. Studies indicate that on an average an American moves at least 11 times in his life and the American Moving and Storage Association estimates that moving a nine room house from DC to LA would cost nearly US$ 12, 000 and more.

Be smart check estimates for "extras" you can do without. Trim costs but don't loose on essentials like breakage insurance.

You have the right to professionalism and a commitment on part of the lawyer.

How to fire your attorney

Often even after careful selection you may find that you and the lawyer you have hired have tangential views and cannot see “eye to eye.” If this happens however hard you try and resolve differences the chances are that your case will suffer. It is best that you gather all your guts and fire the attorney and right off any expenses you have incurred and start a fresh.

When you hire a lawyer to work on legal matters you have the right to professionalism and a commitment on part of the lawyer. Every state has laws on rights of consumers and what a lawyer must do. So, check with the Bar Association or on the World Wide Web what your rights are.

Never be afraid or passive you have a right to: set deadlines, receive copies of all documents, ask for an itemized billing, and get a second opinion when in doubt.

When a conflict on any matter occurs, the first thing to do is communicate. Sulking or speaking behind the back of the lawyer will not help. Be courageous and speak your mind. Many a time just laying the cards on the table can clear matters. If at the end of the meeting the problem remains unresolved you and your lawyer may mutually decide to part ways.

In order to fire a lawyer you must:

• Follow to a‘t’ the agreement made between you and your lawyer. You must include a disagreement clause in your contract and specify clearly the financial liability.
• Have on tab all the papers pertaining to the case and notes of why in your opinion things are not right.
• State clearly in writing why you need to fire the lawyer. And request the lawyer to hand over your file, give you a detailed bill of expenses, and return any retainer he may have in excess of the bill. In case you owe the lawyer money then he has the right to hold on to your file until you settle the dues.

Find a replacement before firing the first lawyer. And ensure that you are not delaying legal process by firing your lawyer in the middle of a series of hearings.

It is not prudent to fire a lawyer verbally. It is best done in writing stating clearly the reasons for firing a lawyer and outlining the payments made as well as terms and conditions determined when hiring the lawyer. Also make sure he receives your letter.

In case of any difficulties approach the courts or ask another lawyer to send him a legal notice. In many states you can submit a complaint about lawyers. Check out the guidelines by the Bar Association of the state you reside in. The law states that lawyers need to follow a code of conduct and must be professional in every way.

Just as it is up to you to hire a lawyer so also it is your choice to fire a lawyer too.

A true leader has two main characteristics about them.

Secret of Leadership – The Two Part Leader

By Jason Osborn

There are so-called leaders all around. You probably know someone that is in a leadership position that should have never been put there. Knowing that there are ‘leaders’ like this in the world should discourage you from becoming like one of them. So how do you separate yourself from the rest of the so-called leaders and establish yourself as a leader whom everyone will want to follow?

A true leader has two main characteristics about them. The first is the ability to motivate. Leaders must be able to not only motivate themselves, but also be able to motivate and inspire those they are leading. Of course, the best way to motivate people is to truly be passionate about what you are doing. People long to follow someone who is passionate about something.

The second characteristic that a true leader must have is the ability to create successful habits in their lives. Successful habits are the glue that keeps everything together between the time where the motivation began and the end when success is achieved. Habits will make or break a leader.

You see, these qualities have to go together. If you are a good motivator but don’t have good habits, then things will fall apart. If you have great habits but can’t motivate, you will not inspire anyone to help, follow, or assist you along the way. If you want to separate yourself from the rest of the ‘leaders’ in this world, master these two characteristics so you can be the best leader possible.

ShoWest offers a peek at electroluminescent signs, high-end nibbles and a system that assigns seats once moviegoers buy tickets.

Theaters of tomorrow: bright lights, big taquitos

If the sights, sounds and smells of the ShoWest exhibition floor are any indication, theaters of the future will be digitized complexes with LED signs, ATM machines that dispense money and movie tickets, and concessions selling everything from pizza to steak taquitos.

That's right, steak taquitos.

Visitors to ShoWest in Las Vegas, the world's largest annual movie exhibition and trade show, lined up three and four deep to snack on bite-size taquitos from Ruiz Foods, a Mexican-food company out of Dinuba, Calif.

Based on the number of folks getting seconds, the ranchero cheesy beef steak and the pepperoni tied for most popular flavor.

Food companies also gobbled up a nice chunk of convention space.

FuNacho representatives talked up their single-serve nachos (less waste), while other companies touted new flavors of ice cream and fountain drinks and larger serving sizes for candy and handed out piping-hot bags of popcorn.

Bright green and twice the size of a normal soda dispenser, Vivian St. Louis' Flavor Fusion machine attracted interest for its look and concept: 16 different flavors, 8 flavor shots and endless drink combinations. Want a cherry-lime Pepsi? It's yours. A Diet Coke shot through with vanilla? You got it.

The machines are not in theaters yet, but Adam Fanger, a customer service coordinator with Fenton, Mo.-based Vivian, expects that to change after ShoWest.

Among the new designs for theater chairs--all offered extra seat room, bigger arm rests and more comfort--Mobiliario's new VIP chair stood out.

More like a love seat than a theater chair, it is designed for a luxury experience, said Miguel Argueta, international sales manager for the Mexico City-based company. Argueta said interest in the VIP movie chair is high.

"Our reputation for quality is well known," he said. "People were waiting for this chair, asking for this chair."

Aisle after aisle showcased technology that promised to revolutionize moviegoing.

In the near future, consumers can expect restaurant-quality meals made with ventless cooking equipment; interactive concession signs; and lightning-swift mobile-phone service allowing customers to reserve seats and pay for tickets.

Todd Alexander, president of Signs Factory Direct, boasted about pioneering the industry's use of electroluminescent signs, which light up when exposed to electric currents.

With the flip of a switch, his digital images sprung to life: beer bubbles appeared to be floating, the wheels on a car to be spinning. He said the energy-efficient and relatively maintenance-free signs can stay on for eight hours a day for six years without being replaced.

"This technology has been around since the 1930s, but nobody thought to bring it to the movie theater industry," Alexander said.

Writing is a great way

The Gift Of Writing
By Neel Raman

For a short time each day, take time out by yourself to reflect on your personal journey. Maybe in the early morning when everything is quiet and still, or just before you go to sleep at night.

Sit quietly for a while and think about the lessons you've learned that day or the challenges you're about to face. Let your mind wander across the landscape of your being and feel your heart slowly waking to the incredible freedom that openness and love is giving you. Think back to previous times, when you hadn't yet given yourself the freedom to explore new possibilities and ways of living and as a result, things were such a struggle.

When you're in these quiet frames of mind, take some paper and a pen and just write from the heart. Write it all down. Let your mind go into freefall and put whatever you are receiving onto the page; write what comes. Explore the feelings you experience every day, and the challenges you face. What are they telling you? What matters is that each day you identify the seemingly insignificant landmarks of your journey and bring your mind into gentle focus on the things that you're learning and the emotions they conjure up in your body.

Listen to your heart.

Finding the words isn't always easy when you're trying to capture intangibles or wanting to express very deep and significant shifts in your thinking, but the more you do, the easier you will find it.

Giving yourself the chance to use your creative mind in this way gives you time to reflect and to acknowledge the setbacks that you've faced and the progress you've achieved. It also gives you some space in your busy life to be alone with that inner truth that tells you when things need to change or encourages you that you're on the right path.

Using the early part of the day or before you go to sleep taps into a state of being where your rational mind is less prone to edit and make judgments. The writing that flows from your heart will be truthful and sincere, and you'll experience a real sense of comfort in this daily connection with yourself.

It gives you a chance to honour the achievements and progress you've made, and to nurture yourself for the times when things were painful or difficult.

Take the time to honour yourself. Writing is a great way to do it.
