Hanoi invests in largest ecological tourism site

VietNamNet Bridge - A 120ha golf course, hotels, entertainment and shopping centers will be built in Hanoi’s largest tourist site.

Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Quoc Trieu granted licence to CP Vincom to build an ecological tourism zone in Long Bien, Cu Khoi and Thach Ban wards of Long Bien District and part of Dong Du Commune in Gia Lam District.

In the first phase, CP Vincom will build outdoor works, an entertainment, sport and tourism zone, including a 36-holf golf course on 120ha, the largest in Hanoi at present.

Entertainment, shopping centres and restaurants will be built on 15ha. In addition, the zone will have a 5ha port to serve visitors to travel along the Red River. The project will also comprise a 20ha of park.

In the second phase, high-grade hotels and villas and 102ha of trees will be developed.

According to CP Vincom, the investor, the total investment in this project is VND1,500 billion (US$93.75 million) and the construction will begin this August. Some works will be put into use as of mid-2009.

GMS discusses measures to attract more tourists

VietNamNet Bridge – Countries in the Great Mekong Sub-region (GMS) should pay attention to improving tourism service quality and infrastructure to meet the increasing demands of holiday-makers.
Deputy Director of the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism Pham Tu made the suggestion at a forum on building a more conducive investment environment for small and medium tourism enterprises in HCM City on March 30.

As the number of foreign tourists to the GMS is predicted to double the current figure by 2015 to reach 50mil visitors, the GMS needs to boost mutual cooperation to put forth suitable common policies to support enterprises involved in building tourism establishments, Tu added.

Senior Consultant at the Thai Institute for Small and Medium Enterprise Development Kamol Ratanavirakul suggested that the International Finance Cooperation (IFC), the Asia Development Bank (ADB), and the Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund (OECF) should give more support to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the GMS.

More than 200 participants at the forum discussed opportunities, challenges, and shared experiences on financial support to SMEs involved in sustainable tourism.

The GMS is home to four natural and 10 cultural heritage sites which were recognised by the United Nations on Educational and Scientific Organisation as world heritage sites.

In 2005, the GMS welcomed over 20.5mil foreign visitors, representing 11% of the total visitors to the Asia-Pacific region.

The tourism sector brought in US$16bil, created 4mil jobs, thus contributing to hunger eradication in regional countries.

Mekong subregion to develop community-based tourism

VietNamNet Bridge - The 6th inter-regional conference on measures to develop community-based tourism in combination with poverty reduction was held in southern Tien Giang province on Mar. 31 with the participation of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and China.

According to Tran Van Ngoi, Director of the Management Board of the Project on Tourism Development in the Mekong Subregion, the project, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), comprises three components.

They include upgrading tourism infrastructure facilities, developing community-based tourism in combination with poverty reduction, and increasing tourism cooperation in the Mekong Subregion.

The upgrade of tourism infrastructure facilities is underway in Vietnam's Tien Giang and An Giang provinces from March 2003 to December 2007 with a total investment of $12.2 million, of which Vietnam contributed $3.7 million.

For component B of the project, participants gave opinions on how to develop proper community-based tourism, contributing to generating jobs, alleviating poverty and increasing incomes for families, taking into account local characteristics.

The participants also shared views on involvement of all sectors in tourism development, environmental protection, initiatives on tourism and bringing into play women's role in gender equality, as well as experiences in management of community-based tourism.

Golf courses sprouting in Vietnam

VietNamNet Bridge - With numerous golf courses popping up all over the country, it looks as if golfing is coming of age in Vietnam.
A US$100 million tourist area covering 2185 hectares in Ha Noi’s neighboring province of Ninh Binh will include a 740 hectare, 54-hole golf course.

The new golfing Mecca will be developed by the Investment Consultant and Enterprise Support Service Joint Stock Company (INCONESS). Divided into three phases, the first of which kicked off at the beginning of this month, the project is expected to be completed by 2015.

Construction of another 27-hole golf course in the city of Hai Phong will begin in September. The US$17.3 million project invested by Korea’s Mibaek Industrial Company is expected to come into operation by the end of 2008.

Meanwhile, the Global Petro Commercial Joint Stock Bank (GP-bank) along with the Central Investment Joint-Stock Company and a Korean firm will join hands to the tune of US$100 million to develop an 80 hectare resort in the Mang Den ecotourism area of Kon Tum Province. Along with the resort, a 100 hectare, 18-hole golf course will also be built. Construction of the two facilities will begin early next year.

Several Korean firms have also previously registered to invest in golf courses in Vietnam including East Asia Air Express Company’s 300 hectare Long Son golf course in Hoa Binh (worth US$20 million for the first phase alone) and Lade Filter Engineering’s US$12 million investment in the Ba Na golf course in Da Nang.

Quang Nam organises travel festival

“Phu Ninh – Meeting Place” Festival was held on August 8-11 at the Phu Ninh Lake, Tam Ky Town, the central province of Quang Nam. The festival is a part of the Quang Nam Tourism Year 2006.

The festival started with an art performance. Tourists to the festival toured around the lake, Bong Mieu Gold Mine, hot mineral water, Su Island, Monkey Island and Chong Island.

Folk games, fishing or discovering beauty of the area also drew a large number of tourists during the festival.

Hoi An in good eyes

Hoi An ancient town is preparing such cultural activities to welcome delegates representing 26 countries for the Tourism Ministry Conference of APEC taking place in October 2006.The photographic competition named ‘Hoi an in good eyes” is also organized to focus on pulicizing Vietnam.

Photographers can send beautiful photos (size;30x45) from early August to 22nd Sep. The winner will receive an award at the Art Exhibition in Hoi an during the click-off APEC Tourism Ministry Conference.

My Son to open at night

The My Son cultural heritage site will officially be open to visitors at night as of March 11, 2006, said Mr. Dinh Hai, the director of the Tourism Department of the central province of Quang Nam.

The management board of the My Son site invested VND 2.8 billion in an underground lighting system to increase the security of the artifacts at night and make them livelier.

A festival, “My Son - illuminated night”, will be held on March 11 under the framework of the National Tourism Year 2006, titled “Quang Nam - one destination for two world heritage sites.”

Quang Nam: Cu lao Cham to become special tourism zone

Quang Nam plans to develop Cham Islet, or Cu Lao Cham, into an international tourism – service zone with a special operation mechanism.

Turning Cu Lao Cham into a special tourism zone is included in the instruction recently issued by Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee Secretary Vu Ngoc Hoang.
Mr Hoang said that resolution No 07 by the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee has emphasised the need to develop Cu Lao Cham, considering this an important part of the province’s tourism development strategy.
He said that Cu Lao Cham should be an international tourism zone with a special operation mechanism which will provide high-grade services and ecological tourism. The most important task for developing Cu Lao Cham zone is to harmonise the development and preservation, the tourism zone development and defense works and the development of Cu Lao Cham and Hoi An ancient town.
Quang Nam Peoples’ Committee Chairman Nguyen Duc Hai said that in 2007 provincial departments would draw up the master plan on the socio-economic development of Cu Lao Cham. In addition, they will form the steering committee in charge of developing Cu Lao Cham into a special tourism zone in Quang Nam province.
Mr Hai has also asked Hoi An town to begin recruiting good staff for Cu Lao Cham.
In addition, Mr Hai also said that Hoi An needed to continue implementing projects on environmental improvement, biological diversification, and historical and cultural values preservation.
