Opera Add-ons

Extensions and themes for the Opera desktop browser

Increased focus on Opera extensions and ending support for Unite applications and Widgets

,

Today we are announcing the beginning of the end for two of our current Add-on platforms. Starting with the upcoming Opera 12 release, Opera Unite and Opera Widgets will be turned off by default for new users. The two Add-on platforms will be completely removed in a later release expected before the end of this year.

Over the last six years we have learned a lot from our work on Opera Widgets and Opera Unite, and when we later built the extension platform for Opera 11 we benefited significantly from this experience. Our extension technology has been a great success, with millions of monthly downloads, and so far completely dwarfing the other platforms. Recently, Opera also shipped a labs version with extension support in Opera Mobile, investigating a fully cross-platform extension environment.

Moving forward we want to focus on one high quality Add-on platform across our products, rather than spending resources on maintaining legacy systems. The know how and and technologies from Unite and Widgets are already being reused in other Opera products. An example is the recently announced UPnP support in Opera Dragonfly.

To provide your feedback about use cases for Opera Unite or Opera Widgets you want to transfer other Opera products, please visit to our forum.

If you are a Widget developer you might be interested in how to convert Widgets to extensions.

Unite was what brought me to Opera... Very disappointed...

DoTheEvo Friday, April 27, 2012 8:49:07 PM

so man up with the extensions, nice stuff like notification popup like webking has

webkitNotifications.createHTMLNotification('blabla.html')

would be nice, especially I like how its 'on the top' over the other windows.
Its also really neat idea to leave the background processes running in the background even when you close the browser and receive notifications. Of course assuming that memory consumption is in check.

support for mp3 is probably not coming, but what should come is firefly not closing popup window when we are debuging and have to alt tab... saving css in to file we are working on through dragonfly might be neat as well, with css auto-complete yay.

The problem with constant css zoom error with latest jquery should be addressed as well, either talk to the jquery guys or set some ignore on that, even if you would bent some popes html specification.

Also more short examples and more videos on how to make extensions. I am a newbie your support is great, and I had no problem starting, but it could be more rich...

Oh ONE MORE THING WHICH IS DRIVING ME NUTS NUTS I TELL YA!!!
THE LANGUAGE SETTINGS IN addons.opera.com
I WONT GET LOGGED IN WHEN I VISIT AFTER OPERA RESTART, AND LANGUAGE SETTINGS REVERTS ALWAYS TO DEFAULT! COME ON! AND THIS IS FRESH OPERA 12.00 INSTALLATION!! BUT IT KEPT HAPPENING BEFORE!!!! AAAA I mean both UI language and filter for extensions. Cookies are there, I think you have some https issue there 'cause portal.opera.com never game me any trouble and cookies looks the same.
Also since we are at the https, how about if I allow user javascript on https in opera:config, you wont ask me every time I restart browser. Move with the time, its 2012, normal everyday sites have https not only some internet banking or whatever you think you are setting that confirmation dialogue for...

also I dont understand why description for out extension has to be plane text. You want us to force to be brieg, but damn bulletpoints at least would be nice. Also preview to how the description would look ones published.

so to wrap it up I don't use unite/widgets so I am not phased by their lost, but I would love to see your promised focus on extensions and also AAAAAAAAA language...

uh, also update of extensions. How about crazy idea of notifying user when update is availabe, rather than just give inconspicuous button under extension list?

As a guy who made a single extension and have only basic understanding of js, html, css I demand that people listen to me!

Very, very disappointing! Unite was a great idea for a not commercial use of the internet. I loved and used it and it was one of the features I like Opera for: Independence!
Why must it been switched off? Is there no way to let it run as it is? Maybe without any support?

onsen-00 Saturday, April 28, 2012 9:31:55 AM

Wait... the advertisment for unite got me to use opera about a week ago and now the support stops?! Why wasn't this mentioned when I set up unite three days ago? wtf?

...and again... looking for another browser...

jean-collas Saturday, April 28, 2012 10:32:45 AM

Nooooo sad
Unite is one of the main reason I recommend people to install Opera, to share files/photos/stream/... the main difference among others browsers...
Pleeaaaase if you really turn off this feature, make it alive as a standalone software (or make it opensource, so somebody else will?) It is such an easy and nice solution.
BTW I have never used widgets, neither extensions (I installed a translation and a youtube dwl I think, but that's it). But Unite is unique, and cannot be replaced! Please provide something else if you turn it off don't let us like this...

Xobrtdoclinux Saturday, April 28, 2012 7:43:07 PM

I VERY disappointed...

conradodl Sunday, April 29, 2012 12:58:25 AM

Too bad for Unite... It was a great, useful service.
But there are some replacements. For easy file sharing you should try Tonido or TappIn. But if you want the same Unite experience, try Weezo: file sharing, music and video streaming, remote desktop, chat room, notes, everything. Oh, and it's open source.

What about Voice?

And another one: What sollutions you say that can substitute Opera Unite? Are you talking about sites, kinda Dropbox or whatever?

Anything Opera does is ahead of the time, for that I chosen Opera till today, this is not reply, mainly today, with lacking of good file sharing sites.

You can use the version 11 till end of year, is when the Unite server will be off.

I'm also going to use Opera 11 still a long time afterward.
Unite can be used separately. Even without a server of the Opera! Here are detailed instructions:
http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/custom-domains-opera-unite/

(same in russian) Я также собираюсь использовать Opera 11 все еще долгое время после этого.
Unite можно использовать отдельно. Даже без сервера Opera! Вот подробная инструкция: (urls)

Hi guys, I updated to Opera 12 beta, and cannot install any Unite applications. I'm logged in, I have (empty) Unite application list, and when I go to unite.opera.com, I all can do is download .ua files to disk, they are not recognized by Opera at all!

Xobrtdoclinux Sunday, April 29, 2012 7:44:38 PM

Witold Baryluk : Opera 12 - nasty, do not use it. It is not have "the Unite".

Andrew Diederichandrewdied Monday, April 30, 2012 1:59:06 AM

I don't care about Unite, but I really, really wish Opera would get hardware smart card support and S/MIME support in the mail client. More and more companies use smart cards for authentication, and Opera has never supported it. It's hard to be a "secure" browser without supporting some of these basic, common security features.

thadeudepaula Monday, April 30, 2012 3:54:00 AM

I was an Opera user from version 5 to 9... as my main development on work is on Chrome and some different implementations (non standard) was embraced by the target public of the site... I started to use more and more chrome...

This week I rediscovered Opera with the magnificent Unite (I used it sometimes to share media and files from my work station in the last two years)... and just now I'm sad about Unite.

The widgets was a cute idea with no practical application. Will you give us an alternative? sad awww sad

Depends a bit. On KDE I've got a bunch of widgets set up like a big clock and battery indicator and I like that, but am just not quite sure to what extent it should be provided by Opera on desktop. Smartphones, however, are a pretty good home for widget applications, so in that sense you could see desktop widgets primarily as the developing environment.

mtzmtsh Tuesday, May 1, 2012 5:32:57 PM

Killing off features that distinguished you from the competition? Welp, better grab some more market share!
Bad move, really bad.

Jimtoyotabedzrock Tuesday, May 1, 2012 6:16:55 PM

Mozilla is adding an installable app platform likw Opera widgets.

It was just enabled in the nightlys. It shows up in the add/remove applications list on windows just like widgets.

You guys should have expanded functionality, you where always keeping it to locked down.

Kevin Vaillantkvaillant Tuesday, May 1, 2012 7:12:30 PM

Funny how they (Opera) says the numbers don't justify the continued development or support for Unite, seems to me their are a lot of people whom use Unite. I'm sure a lot of users would be happy with continued use of Unite as it is with no more development, I know I would be.
May as well switch to Firefox/Chrome. It's to bad I love (loved) Opera.

FransFrenzie Tuesday, May 1, 2012 7:49:27 PM

Speaking of Firefox, its extensions can in fact host websites: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/browser-server/

Of course it lacks much of Unite's finesse.

onsen-00 Tuesday, May 1, 2012 7:50:08 PM

I always wondered why developers have such a hard time maintaining stuff that needs no further development. They either develop it till it gets unusable (Amarok 2.0, KDE4, Ubuntu and unity...) or just drop it. Is maintainance really that hard a thing to do? Or is it just Opera trying to stay unpopular.... look at their market share of the last decades and this doesn't even sound farfetched.

Pamalosebi Wednesday, May 2, 2012 12:11:57 PM

I personally think that widgets are not so important. Especially since the introduction of extensions.

But Opera Unite was a fantastic idea. I can not understand why they did not want to support.

I must say that I am disappointed. And I hope they do not remove Opera unite.

Edit: The longer I think about it the more horrified I become!
I never thought about change to another browser!

Think about it ...

In order to understand this, you should look at the Unite apps site since it was first introduced. One word could describe it best - stagnation. Few new apps were introduced since the beginning, and even fewer were being maintained by their creators. What's the point in keeping it up any longer if it diverts Opera's resources to something only few people are interested in developing for? Even such giants as Google with its seemingly unlimited resources know when to discontinue a failed project (Google Wave or Notebook, anyone?). Such discernment is even more crucial in the case of smaller players like Opera.

And this is the problem. It have a lot of users, but no developers or new apps. But the solution is not disable Unite, the real solution is create more apps and make it "accessible" for new developers.

What's the point in developing stuff for something that is already complete? There is no need for further development. Unite works, what else could you expect from it? Right, that it will continue to work.

My idea is become the Unite apps in extensions, but keeping the Opera Unite panel. So those special extensions would be added to that panel, making easy to find the Unite things, and adding to the Extension Manager normally.

I know i am understanding better the situation. There were be 3 running "extension" plataforms: Unite, Widgets, Extensions. Extension are more populars and is better have to focus in a kind of plataform, better become the Unite apps and the Widgets in extensions really. And moreover, for extensions you wouldn't need to have a MyOpera account to use the future "Unite extensions".

Supuhstar Thursday, May 3, 2012 4:33:46 PM

To the Opera developer team: Don't try to make Opera become Chrome; that just makes you look desperate. Instead, try to make Opera faster than Chrome, with more features (already done, IMHO)! The moment you start leaving out features is the moment you start losing your original following.

Of course extensions are more often developed and downlaoded, because these are to change the way the browser performs when OBSERVING websites, whereas Unite is a platform for CREATING websites. The fact that not much has been developed fro Unite is simply due to the amazing fact that the premade applications are diverse and powerful enough to support almost all needs of a server! I honestly can't think of any other things needed for a server other than what Unite already offers, other than PHP support and the like, but that is something I can easily do without.

The point is that you're comparing apples and drawbridges; unite and Extensions are two different entities entirely, and need to be thought of and treated in completely separate ways. Unite will inherently move slower than extensions because it does so much more! For instance, the average Extensions user will probably use ad-blocking, translation, and shortcut extensions. This is all well and good, but that's a completely different from the average Unite user, who will probably use Web Server, File Sharing, Photo Sharing, and Stream Media applications. The Extensions user wants to augment and personalize his private experience of the internet, whereas the Unite user wants to provide services to others. You can't share files and host websites through extensions, and you can't add custom CSS and block ads with Unite applications.

I could raise many more points, comparing Unite to Extensions with other metaphors, but I haven't the time. Please, Opera developer team, keep Opera the same beast we are used to, and let us continue using your amazingly robust Unite platform!

You can only get those custom domains if you pay, which makes it pointless. If you go that far you might as well drop unite and go for a real server.

True. But they'll also lose new ones. Me for example. Installed Opera this month. Won't ever update to the next version if unite will be missing.

Also.. I feel kind of tricked, because I opted to install Opera because of Unite. But I installed Unite one day after the announcement, that they won't support it anymore,.. so... yeah...

Yes! cheers The demise of Opera Widgets and Unite is long overdue! They were clever tools that should never have been part of the browser, and would have been better off as part of a separate application. rip

Extensions allow users to add any missing features that are prerequisites for adopting Opera. Like it or not, robust extension support is necessary for Opera's future success.

I'm quite surprised to see all these moaning users, since in over a decade of IT (in the United States) I have never met anyone who actually used Unite or Opera Widgets. *Ever*. There are better widget platforms out there, and easier filesharing tools, and all of them are used by wider audiences than the people who insist Opera should support a barely-used platform just because they don't want to make a Google account. rolleyes Well, others don't want to install Opera, so suck it up. bigsmile
