The electronic health record ia a means of organizing patient data making profound use of the advances in the field of information technology. Its purpose is to fulfill the various need for information not only of patients and heathcare providers but also of other beneficiaries. The implementation of EHR systems in healthcare organization is very COMPLEX and involves many parameters.
The paperbase health record have been used for centuries but its have a number of significant disadvantages. First of all, paper is a very fragile medium that requires large storage facilities. In addition paperbased health record require large afford to keep the files and archives organised and updated, they are available only in one place at a time, and the aggregation of data for reseach is difficult. Further more UiTM are moving to a model where the patient is no longer a passive recipient of the services provided by nurses, physicians and others, but is an active partner with the healthcare practitioners. The successful partnership requires open access to the healtcare information. The creation and implementation of EHR systems is at the hearth of addressing these needs
The barrier to the adoption of the EHR that is probably the most difficult to overcome is the lack of easily apparent returns on investment (ROI).The healthcare decision makers find it difficult to readily demostrate ROI or justify the expenditure of dollars and time to undertake a comprehensive EHR system within their organization, particularly while healthcare cost continue to spiral out of control and take into consideration the fact that the initial investment on the equipment can be quite expensive.
