Politics Gone Wild!

, , ,

Some critics say Royal, who is well-known for sporting skirts and heels, has used her gender to gain popularity.
In other news, Arnold Schwarzennegger was accused of using his gender to an unfair advantage when he whipped off his pants and let himself hang loose to the world as women around the country swooned and all of LA whooped with pleasure and joy. Democrats accused the Terminator star of using the size of his gigantic penis to get legislation passed which made it possible for him to be elected over and over again in the United States to the post of Commander-in-chief.

Feminists around the world called this a great victory for women's suffrage but wouldn't elaborate further only screaming "He's Back!" in reply.

In other parts of the world, French people tore the people who made the quote (above) to shreds.

Of Pride and Prejudice

,

Here is a personal experience, as well as a moment of national pride, which I want to share with you. Hope you find it worth the time you put in reading it :

"In the middle of 1965 India-Pakistan war, US govt - then a close friend of Pakistan - threatened India with stopping food-aid (remember "PL-480"?). For a food deficient India this threat was serious and humiliating. So much so that in the middle of war, Prime Minister (Late) Lal Bahadur Shastri went to Ram Leela Grounds in Delhi and appealed to each Indian to observe one-meal-fast every week to answer the American threat. As a school boy, I joined those millions who responded to Shastri ji's call. I continued the fast even when the war was over and India became self sufficient in food. Hurt deep by the national humiliation suffered at the hands of the US govt, I had vowed to stop my weekly fast only when India starts giving aid to USA.

It took just 40 years. Last week THE day arrived. When Indian ambassador in Washington DC handed over a cheque of US$ 50 million to the US govt, two plane loads of food, medical aid and other relief materials were waiting to fly to the USA. Time to break the fast? With no bad feeling about the USA, and good wishes for the Katrina victims, this humble Indian feels proud of the distance India has covered in 40 years.
Let's celebrate a New India!"

The stuff I get in my mailbox is weird. Who sends me this stuff anyway?

It's not just the incompetence

, , , ...

It's the sheer bloody mindedness of the entire thing.

Wouldn't it be better if the government were to get more contact between the corporations and the ISPs to suggest that pages be removed for content and let the host (blogger.com, opera.com, wordpress.org, ... etc.) have the option of blocking/removing content or advising the page owner to cease and desist?

The way the government's wording it, it almost sounds like, oh I don't know, if a blogger were to, let's say, speak out against a hypothetical institution, the IIPM for example, who were to be pissed with that blogger, who for our argument's sake said that their college was a fraud. They could then get the ISPs to block that particular blog now couldn't they? And the Government could say that this was justified.

Subhash Srivastav

, , , ...

I've come across just two references to this news item in my facebook community page and a former colleague just IM'd an identical message to the same effect.

Subhash Srivastav, a student of the AIIMS, died at 6:44PM on the 20th of May 2006 and his death has been attributed to his hunger strike in opposition to the proposed reservation initiative in India. The messages even go on to say that the media isn't reporting this issue. I haven't been able to ascertain if this was because of someone trying to suppress this bit of news or because the family of the deceased wished to protect their privacy.

In either case, I haven't been able to find news articles citing this claim. Please do link to these articles if they exist.

My condolences to the deceased's family and friends. I hope his death was not in vain.

UPDATE: Thanks to the DesiTexan for pointing to the news article which cites this claim to be a hoax. Good work boy. Here's a biscuit. Fetch!

A vaccine for cancer, and how do they spin it?
A Vaccine That Prevents Cancer, But Will Parents Accept It?
Parents May Not Understand the Link Between HPV and Cancer
In my day, they didn't give us "choices". Parents couldn't "choose" their children's future, they did what they were told.

If the gubmint or the media spins the need for a war, you sign up for it. B**ch!

I'd rather see the news story that went something like this:
A Vaccine That Prevents Cancer, Doctors Forsee a New Future
Parents Confident that the Link Between HPV and Cancer will become bleedingly obvious over the years
Oops. Wrong metaphor.

Save the Hall of Flags

, , , ...

Remember the post about the Vietnamese students protesting the Flag put up in our University's main feature (our Hall of Flags)? Well, it just got uglier.

The local politicians apparently blocked the funding for a new building, that was to be part of the campus's branching-out-to-be-a-bigger-university drive, because of this protest. They insisted on the offending flag be removed. The president of the university (here's the genius part) had all the flags in Nedderman Hall removed. Now ALL the students are bound to be involved in this debate which they rightfully ought to be.

Well, the debate has begun. SavetheHallofFlags.org has more details (login required). We start our walk on the graduation parade from this very place and it's going to suck donkey balls be very depressing if we start the day with that hanging over our heads.

Gotta jot this down before I forget

, , , ...

here was a gathering of Vietnamese students and faculty of our college (or school - whatever) today to protest the percieved injustice meted out to them by the University of Texas at Arlington. The crux of the matter is, about a month ago, in the annual international student event, the present flag of the communist regime in Vietnam was paraded rather than this flag. The students gathered in a parking lot today and the police even blocked the roads leading to the parking lot - there must have been a march planned or something.

In any case, I would have missed all of this if I hadn't gone past the parking lot on my way to get my hair cut. The lady at the salon (which coincidentally happens to be under Vietnamese management - and I think the lady is incharge of the place) told me that today was the anniversary of a "very bad day for my people". I suppose we (i.e. Indians) have those too (Jallianwalah Bagh comes to mind). She then told me that this was the day that 30 years ago her people lost their country to the present government. The thought suddenly went into my head - we got our independence 50 years ago - and we've steadily been losing our country. I was shocked that I had convinced myself that. Or was I just trying to compete with her on a nationalistic level? :eyes:
