Understanding Alcohol Addiction and its Causes

An unstoppable urge to consume intoxicating drinks that are made from fruit or grain fermentation such as beer, wine, whiskey or any other hard liquor is termed as Alcohol Addiction. In simpler terms, when a person craves/yearns for alcohol and is unable to restrain himself or curb his drinking then that person is said to be addicted to alcohol. Also when people suffer from withdrawal symptoms such as headache, nausea, shivering, anxiety or sweating when they stop consuming alcohol or if the person feels more drawn towards drinking in order to get a high then that person is also considered to be addicted to alcohol or an alcoholic. What distinguishes an addict from a normal person is that a normal person drinks to get “high” while an alcoholic drinks to feel “normal” otherwise he would experience pains and discomforts! Getting rid of this alcohol addiction is not an easy task and will power alone does not help. Most alcohol addicts need assistance in the form of treatment and during the course of the treatment full support from family and friends in order to quit drinking. While many succeed in getting rid of their addiction and starting their lives anew, there are many who despite all the support and the best treatments are unable to suppress their need for alcohol. A person’s surroundings and/or traumatic experiences may also have an impact on his addiction or dependence on alcohol. Alcoholism can be very destructive mentally and physically for the person affected by it and could get them into serious trouble as well. Majority of the crimes, murders and suicides today have alcohol abuse as a reason behind them. Apart from the above, alcohol addiction may also lead to various health problems such as: • Destruction of brain cells which may in turn lead to brain damage • The functioning of the central nervous system may get greatly disturbed as its ability to consolidate and process information may get acutely hampered • May cause cancer of the mouth, esophagus and stomach due to inflammation • The risk of high blood- pressure, heart attacks and other heart problems are greater in alcoholics as drinking leads to irregular heartbeats • Can harm the vision, damage the sexual function, and slow down blood circulation and cause water retention and may also lead to malnutrition. • Excessive drinking may cause a fatty liver and ultimately lead to liver cirrhosis • Drinking has also been found to cause skin and pancreatic disorders and weaken the muscles and bones thereby affecting the body’s immune system. In order to get rid of alcohol addiction, firstly one must identify the root cause of the problem. Once the problem has been identified and you have made up your mind that you will, no matter what, fight hard to get rid of this addiction; half the battle is won. Thereafter, you should seek counseling and treatment for it which is now very easily available through various alcohol rehabilitation centers all over the world.
