Paul suffers loss

Continuing a bit more on what I was saying yesterday regarding the one man theory as far as sinners and righteousness goes, we see one doctrine that is pretty basic that is believed by all and that is that in Adam all became sinners.

Now I doubt if anyone would say that anyone had to believe and accept what Adam did in order to become sinners. I think all will agree that this came about without any involvement on our part as it is a given that this is what happened when Adam fell. I don’t think I have ever heard a sermon saying we had to believe in Adam in order to be made sinners. We all believe that because one man disobeyed all were declared to be sinners. Although this may sound a bit unfair, it is nevertheless exactly what happened when Adam disobeyed. That we became guilty of what someone else did really and truly sounds unfair. We are actually a product of Adams sin, regardless of whether we feel it is right or not. It just is that way and we accept it as such.

In Romans 5 Paul says it clearly that this first Adam had this impact upon the human race. Even if we had done everything right from day one, what Adam did was passed on to all of us whether it was fair or not. No one had to choose Adam or believe in him in order to be affected by his disobedience.

Now we move on to the second Adam Jesus Christ. We have all been told we have to believe in Him and accept Him in order for what He did to be in effect in our lives. If this is so, which of the two had more impact on the human race? Looking at it in that light, which of the two would have been more powerful in what they did? Would it not be the first Adam? Would not the second Adam be very deficient in what He came to accomplish if this was the case that none of what He did was ours unless we believed it?

We see that by one mans disobedience all were made sinners and no one has problems with that. We also see that by one mans obedience all were made righteous before God. Your belief in Jesus is very important but it is not what made you righteous before God. Your belief in the first Adam is not what made you a sinner before God and the same applies to the second Adam, Jesus Christ. Your belief in Him is very important but it is not what made you righteous before God anymore than your belief in the first Adam made you a sinner before God.

It is what Jesus did that made you righteous. Not what you or I did. It is not your faith that obtains this righteousness. It is His faith. Paul counted all the things he did as all loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus. He saw that all he ever did to live a righteous life had no merit whatsoever in God’s sight as far as becoming righteous goes. He counted everything he ever did as a loss and saw they were just dung. In verse 9 he says how this righteousness is brought about. I will post something on that tomorrow.

The one man theoryWhose faith is it?
