Opera Turbo is ... fast as lightning!

,

I just tried to load a page filled with images, and I saw this down in my notification area for Turbo:

Opera Turbo is enabled (current speed: 16.7x, 55 MB saved)

Disabling Middle-click paste in Opera under Linux

,

So I've been tearing my head off due to being annoyed of the feature of X, that makes middle-click paste or, as in Opera's case, open the pasted link. In my case, I couldn't stand this, as I am using middle click to open links in new background tabs. After spending some time around forums, there were no immediate solutions in sight, so I decided to look through opera:config, and what did I find there?

By going to: opera:config#UserPrefs|ExtendedCenterMousebuttonAction and setting this option to 0, the middle click, or center mouse button as Opera calls it, will work as expected. No more lost forms or frustration due to accidentally missing the link while middle clicking. Now it works as it should!

Editing the Twitter Opera Widget to yield more frequent updates.

, ,

EDIT: Seems 1 update/minute is too hard for the 100 server updates / hour, so I've started using updates every 2 minutes instead!

EDIT 2: The author of Twitter Opera Widget says that it will be added in the next update: Linkage

For some reason, the Twitter Opera Widget has 5 minutes updates as the lowest possible update frequency, however, I think it worked when I updated the widget's index.html file which contained the options menu.

  1. Close the Twitter Opera Widget.
  2. Navigate to where your Opera installation saves your settings. On Windows Vista it was C:\Users\Robert\AppData\Local\Opera\Opera\widgets for me, but it differs from different operating systems and versions of these.
  3. Here, find the Twitter Opera Widget file, mine was named Twitter Opera Widget_7206_3.21.wgt, and open it in your favourite archive extractor. I used WinRAR. Extract all of its contents.
  4. Open the index.html file for editing, and locate where it reads
    <select id="update-interval">
    <option value="0" data-locale="manual">Manual</option

  5. After this, add the following lines:
    <option value="1">1 <span data-locale="minutes">minute</span></option>
    <option value="2">2 <span data-locale="minutes">minutes</span></option>

  6. Save the index.html file and close it.
  7. Using your favourite archive extractor, repack all the extracted files into a Zip archive bearing the same name as the widget.
  8. Rename the original widget file to something else and rename the Zip archive to what the widget file originally was named, in my case Twitter Opera Widget_7206_3.21.wgt.
  9. Relaunch the Widget from Opera, go to settings and choose the new 1 minute setting.

Please comment if it works or not. It seems to be working here.

Summer internship at Opera!

, , , ...

I was in an interview yesterday, and luckily, it turned out well. I was offered a summer internship at Opera Software ASA, where I'd be juggling between the task I currently have here (1 day/week), and 4 days going for QA/Bug fixing at My Opera. As such, I am now delving into the world of Perl, so that I am prepared to start digging through the code.

Since I have quite an experience with PHP, the transaction shouldn't be that tough, but I am still learning myself basic things, such as functions. I've decided to try to recode my homepage into using Perl as its backend, but this has to be a project to be developed over time, as I am getting a Java project at school released about now.

In either way, expect some Perl code to show up in this blog over time.

I am nerd, me.

Hmm, let me think:
  • Is my code cleaner than my flat? Yes, I would surely say so.
  • Do I ping websites if they don't respon within 10 seconds? I usually check my connectivity by attempting to access another website, but it has occured.
  • Have I ever watched a movie trailer and thought "I have that font"? No. But I have been doing some "Comeoooon, why do they use Shlop!" or "I really hate Comic Sans MS" and the alikes.
  • Have I watched all episodes of Star Trek 4 times? HIja'. At least... I'm not far away!
  • Do I refer to MythBusters to prove a point? I am quite certain I have done so.

So, let me see. Almost all are almosts. Perhaps I'll get a job in Opera someday.

My custom Opera searches

,

As I am getting more and more worked into Opera's awesome abilities, I see myself with some that I almost cannot live without. Whenever I have to use another browser, I keep typing the custom Opera searches into Firefox or Chrome or whatever's address bar. I thought I'd share some of mine with you.

How to?
Go to Tools -> Preferences (Ctrl + F12), go to the Search tab.

By clicking Add.. you will be able to add a new search.

Here you write in the address of what you search for, and the search word should be expressed by %s. By using the example shown above, you will be able to simply type, for instance, myo Amnith in your address bar, and easily come to my blog here at My Opera.

There's a simpler way of adding searches. Say that I want to add a quick search to my blog. I can then right click the box where I type the word I want to search for and click Create Search...

In the popup I write what short cut I want to use, click OK, and voilá -- I can just type amn Star Trek to search my blog for Star Trek.

Searches
I will type the name of the search, the abbreviation and then the line that does the magic so that I or others can easily copy-paste it to get it working. These should be entered in the input boxes of the same name in the add custom search boxes above. Lastly I'll add some comments where it's needed.

Comments: This one is added in Opera, but I wanted to give a headsup so that you can easily see how things are done. In addition, I use this about 200 times a day, so it justifies it in this list.

What does your Opera look like?

I got inspired by aaas (whom got inspired by Thobi) to post my setup of Opera. So here it is:

Opera 9.6 is out!

Today Opera 9.6 was released. It's nice and fast, just as it predecessor Opera 9.5. The only con is that my laptop will be "outdated" by wearing a Opera 9.5 sticker. I suppose I'll have to try to reink the 5 into a 6. :-D
