You Have No Idea How Many Shows I've Been Watching These Days

,

Since when watching American TV shows becomes part of my job? Oh, I guess it was two months ago, when I started the Westernizer project

Honestly speaking, I did watch a lot of American TV shows before the Westernizer get started, but I was just kind of seeing it as a excellent way to learn English, therefore most shows I watched were something like reality show (Survior, The Amazing Race, America's Next Top Model ...), sitcom (Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Two & a Half Men, The Office ...), and some cartoon (South Park, Family Guy ...), but rarely watching drama since it takes 40 something minutes to see one episode and the English in drama is a bit difficult to catch (well, at least more difficult than sitcom and reality show IMHO). And I rarely didn't watch medic shows before due to the rule of watching I made up myself which was that no subtitle was allowed while watching American TV shows, as a result medic drama was eventually way out of my capability (I mean, think about how many medic slang in these kind of show!). And (so many ands), I rarely watched science fiction shows either.

Everything changed since I started Westernizer. Since I started editing a American TV show-themed magazine, it's a must for me to know about all these shows, and the best way to know a TV show is, without question, watching it. What's more, in order to watch medic shows, the rule of no subtitle was officially abandoned.

So, the crazy watching action begins ...

As a result, in the past two months, I've been watching many many shows, the following list is just a unfinished one: House Season 1,2,3, Grey's Anatomy Season 1,2,3, Battlestar Galactica Miniseries & Season 1, Heroes, Ugly Betty ...... really huge amounts. But I got well pay back, I feel much easier when editing the magazine(Westernizer), and find myself have more and more insight and inspiration  This is so damn good :D

And now, the editing precess of the 3rd volume of Westernizer is underway, and it's expected to release on 28 December. Hopefully this volume can reach the level that we never did cause we've contribute so much energy on it and more and more people come together to help us. This is amazing. Westernizer is very hot now and it's only getting hotter, we have a bright future, and we believe we can succeed.

How Time Flies!

, , ,

OK, I know I haven't written blog for a really long time. To tell you the truth I feel guilty about that, and that's why I made up my mind to finish this post while in the office, which I also haven't done for long time -- you know I rare don't write blog while at work, not any more

Many things happened since my last post. First of all, the first volume of Westernizer magazine released! This is very huge for me. Editing a entire magazine was a brand new challenge for me, not even mention I'd never done that before. At the end of day the four-week's hard work pays back, I managed to release the first volume just in time, and it earns hundreds of downloads. Honestly speaking I'm very proud of what I've done, anyway editing a entire magazine is anything but a easy job. Now I work on the second volumes of Westernizer magazine which expected to release by the date Nov. 26.

And here goes the second stuff. I have tons of business trips through these days. And last weekend I'd just finished the longest business trip Ihve ever had so far, guess what, this business trip made me stay in a city for 12 days! That was nearly two weeks, and I'd pretty much ran out of clean clothes I brought when took off

The third one is something technical. If you're able to recall two big software update announcement then you might know what I'm saying. Yes, they were webbrowsers! Microsoft released the biggest update for its webbrowser in the latest five years a couple of days, and in pretty much the same time Mozilla released a major update for its Firefox too. That means, IE now labels as 7.0 and Firefox goes to 2.0. The sign of another webbrowser war? Probably. Wonder about my response? I updated Firefox to 2.0 and stood by on IE -- Microsoft is expected to release the official Chinese version of IE 7.0 in one month or two, just no rush, anyway anything happen to IE may effect the stability of the whole WindowsXP system, don't wanna risk it.

Did I mention the things I hate about the update precess of Firefox. Oh I guess not. Now let me tell me, everytime Firefox got major update, certain number of add-ons (that's what Firefox call them nowadays, in the old days they were known as extension) would sure to experience what I call 'varied period of incompatibility'. That was, for some reason some add-ons turned out to be incompatible with the new version of Firefox, and things won't change until developers update these add-ons to support this newly released platform. Firefox 2.0 didn't disappoint me, nearly ten add-ons that I installed on Firefox became useless after the update process, and it took nearly a whole month for those different developers realize the incompatibility problems and fix them. Anyway I'm feel lucky and happy that all add-on I installed previous function at the time I type these characters, you know last time I update Firefox, there were broken add-ons never recovered ... I guess they probably abandoned by the authors.

So, I guess this is it. There are so many things happened during the days and there's no way I typed every detail in this post. Gotta keep on blogging from this post on

Creative Commons License -- Pretty Good!

,

When I was puzzled by licenses like MPL (Mozilla Public License) and GPL this evening, again, I was saved accidently, this time it was by another kind of license which's name was Creative Commons License.

Accoreding to its website, Creative Commons License mainly focuses on cultural, educational, and scientific works. It's different from GPL-like license, instead, Commons License allows you to choose between 'a flexible range of protections and freedoms' to protect your copyright while let your works be shared by other nice people. This is amazing, and honestly speaking I felt like this was the one, this was the license I'd been looking for.

So far, the register of project in Sourceforge is completed, and by now I am in the process of waiting for the staff of Sourceforge to review the requisition. God bless.

Time Means EVERYTHING!

,

It's the first time I've ever found a serious competition. God they're coming very fast! Fortunately they're just stepping up as well. Gosh, never thought this game (that's right, I treat it as a game, but it's a game that requires you to dedicate all your energy to it) is getting such breath-taking. Anyway, I've gotta move fast, as fast as I can.

Now I'm quite sure that I'll ignore my current job in the next whole month. I'm not speaking of quiting or something, but I think I definitely need some time to let me focus on the plan and make things done. I know that's not quite fair to my current project since they've been experiencing lacking of workforce these days, but there's nothing I can do.

I've stepped into this competition, there's no way to turn around. I don't wanna have such vision that five or six years later, I feel regret that I didn't move fast that some people else steal my originality and got themselves rich. No way! That's my originality, I'll try my best to protect myself and my benefit, I'll make this business work no matter how tough it's gonna be. I'm born to win, and I know it.

Time means everything now, there's no much time to waste, time killing is unacceptable. Move move move!

Lesson Learnt from 24 Days

, , , ...

Finally, in less a week, I finish the book 24 Days. 24 Days was written by two Wall Street Journal reporters who witness the failure and bankruptcy of Enron. Actually they were not just witnessing, their continuous reports acted as powerful weapons through it all and you can pretty much say that they uncovered the truth that Enron tried to hide from people on their own (with many insiders' help) and gave the first shot, and by doing that they caused the whole chain-reactions of Enron's bankruptcy event.

Now there're some certain things that I gain from this book. Though it's not much and may sounds kind of naive, I'm proud that I know many stuff about running a company after done reading it. Now I would like to share some lessons I learn from this book

Lesson Learnt:

1/ Watch out the cash flow. The problem cash flow causes definitely has the power to, well, if you're not careful enough, destory your company no matter how huge or how strong you think it is. Cash flow is the lifeline of a company, a company running out of cash is a company who's not far away from its bankruptcy. This tip is extremely important for me since a start-up usyally doesn't have too much cash therefor the cash flow matters even more.

2/ The making of a balance sheet may be tricky, but it matters when you go public. To be honest I personally think this is the one of the major differences between private company and public company. My opinion is, for a start-up, unless it's growing too fast to get money investment, don't rush in the stock market. The appetency for look-good balance sheet can lead to disaster for a company.

3/ Never invest all your money on your company's stock. Maybe you think you're working for this company, you know everything about this company, so it's safe to invest all your money on its stock. Wrong! Let me tell you the truth that it'is crazy and very risky. You thought you know your company very well, but chances are it turn out that your company going down on the next day right after your purchased $10,000 stock. The operating of a company is tricky, especially for a public company. You NEVER know what'll happen next.

One Step Forward

,

Some said, everything looks different when it comes to detail.

At least for me, this's unassailable. When the task comes to detail, I was a bit shocked. You can say I was a bit scared by the difficulty of this task. It's gonna be a very tough task for me, it really is, actually it's much tougher than I thought it was going to be.

But, I've made up my mind, this is the once in a lifetime opportunity for me by now, and probably for the rest of my life, if carrying on this task means I would have to risk my youth and much money, bring it on, I take it. I'm ready for the challenge. I consider it as both difficult and interesting, and fun! And there's no doubt that I'll have a lot of fun while I'm doing this task, and I'll gain many precious experience.

Start-up.com - The Rise & Fall of a Dot.com Corp

, ,

There's a documentary film called Start-up.com, maybe you've never heard about it cause it's not a big nor famous film, but after I've done watching this film this afternoon, I found myself know something more about being a entrepreneur and running a start-up.

There're some fun facts, according to Windows time stamp, this film was downloaded in Oct.23, 2004 which is pretty much two clear years ago. And I just saw it once for like just 5 minutes and then switch to another show. Yesterday when I checked out the films & TV shows stored on my old harddisk, I happened to find that there was such a film exist in my harddisk! Needless to say, I copied it to my laptop immediately -- any stuff about start-up or something can catch my eyes extreme easily these days. It took me two days to finish this film -- I always find myself lack of time when it comes to TV shows- or film-watching, there're always a lot of things to do in teh night time.

You may wonder what do I think after seeing this start-up theme documentary, I've gotta say this film is too entrepreneur -themed. There're not many material about the business itself, this documentary chooses to put most focus on those entrepreneur -- Kaliel Essaza Tuzman the one who founds govWork.com and contribute all his time and energy on this new start-up by being the CEO of it. Therefor you won't expect to learn many stuff about the how business works stuff, instead, this documentary provides you a band new angle of view from a entrepreneur to witness the completely process of rise and fall of the start-up, which is something you probably won't be able to find in some other similar documentaries.

Anway, I think I would rewatch this documentary next week since I don't quite get the concept at the first time. I'm pretty sure I can learn many things from this documentary.

BTW: The website of this startup ( http://www.govworks.com ) seems no longer function. Should this count as 'The End' of this start-up course? I guess so.
