Very interesting smile Is there a story about these sculptures?

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Sunday, November 4, 2007 8:06:36 PM

Yes and thanks for asking.

In the 1880's, on the frontier of the Wichita River, the town of Wichita Falls emerged, named after the Indian word "Wee-Chi-Tah" and a small waterfall.

After a dozen years of hard work and dedication, this legend has been commemorated with a multi-part statue standing on the banks of the 'waist deep' Wichita River for all visitors to enjoy. Sculptor Jack Steven's creation is a life-sized replica of a Comanche woman and her companions as she tested the river's depth... and gave a river and city its name... "wee-chi-tah".

interesting statue smile

Rickcwbywz Tuesday, November 27, 2007 11:25:15 PM

Then wee-chi-tah means "Up to my butt"?
Just kiddin.
You didn't mention it is Comanche for "waist deep".
I was stranded there on the outskirts once when a friend blew up the engine in his Harley. I stayed at some redneck bar while he went for a truck to get the bike backe to Dallas.
Scariest two days I ever spent smile

@claude I don't speak any of the native languages but my great grand mother was half Cherokee. Those times really fascinated me. You would be really surprised how many landmarks follow the native tribe's names for them.
@angel You are from Texas then?

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, November 28, 2007 6:54:18 PM

Thanks Claude..no problem.

Rick, yes......I have only spent 7 years outside of Texas.

claudeholdowicz.wordpress.comholdowicz-claude Wednesday, November 28, 2007 7:31:26 PM

I don't realy know all about Native Americans, I just read an excellent book from Forrest Carter: The Education of Little Tree. He was a Cherokee I think smile

Rickcwbywz Wednesday, November 28, 2007 10:41:49 PM

Ah, You know that book is fiction don't you?
He is a good writer no doubt. I love some of his books about the south but I question what he really knows of the Cherokee. They were treated pretty bad, I just think he is trying to ride on the coat tails of "The Trail of Tears". You want true native american stuff, read about that.

claudeholdowicz.wordpress.comholdowicz-claude Thursday, November 29, 2007 8:03:17 AM

Yes but I think it is a fiction based on Forrest Carter's real childhood.
Do you know a good book about "The Trail of Tears"? I have just read some basic articles.
I also read a nice book (in French) about words of wisdom from Native Americans in 1900:

Thank you Rick smile

I like accounts from varified sources and not just a historical view of things so... my favorite would be After the Trail of Tears By William G. McLoughlin.
I googled it and see it is still in print.
It is historically acurate. It is like finding studies on the Civil War. It is hard to find books that tell the real truth. It is like they say, The winners right the history books.
Oh and Carter did try to pass that off as an autobiography but later people found out he was about 30 years off from the history he wrote about. New printings do state that it is fiction.

claudeholdowicz.wordpress.comholdowicz-claude Friday, November 30, 2007 9:49:24 AM

OK Thanks. I found that book only in English:

Rick, do you know Chief Arvol Looking Horse? And the story of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf?
Have a look there: http://www.wolakota.org/
I would like to have your advice about (if you have time for that).
Have a good day smile

Rickcwbywz Friday, November 30, 2007 10:40:10 PM

I really rather not comment other than say I think that in this case the calf is being exploited. It was born on a ranch that produces meat.
Good luck for them!
If you stop and think about all the religions, why wouldn't the native Indian beliefs be among the most creditable.
They worship our Mother Earth. The thing that gives us life.
At one time there were two white bison. this is the first born in almost a hundred years.
To the natives, this is comparable to the earth being visited by an angel.
I wonder why this animal isn't given to the tribe, or sold to them per pound like they would normally would it it hadn't been white.
I think one of the best things to happen to the natives is the casinos and gambling on reservations. That is as long as we can keep the white people from running them and taking over half the profits.
Have you ever seen the things that that money can do for a tribe?
It is amazing. They still hold true to the "council". They build their own schools, all the people of the tribes own there own land and houses.
It is a shame that modern society is encroaching on them.
Well, you asked my advice. I guess you can tell that I think the indians got a raw deal. We give more money to Columbian politians each year than we do to Native Americans.

I totally agree.....what a tragedy!
