The Flight of Her Lifetime

, , ,

This poem is dedicated to the Autumn Photo Network and all those that love the beauty of nature.

The Flight of Her Lifetime

Vaguely aware but not accepting
the fate that would over take the
generations before her and all the
ones after her, she felt so alive.

She watched the children playing
all summer long, giving them a bit
of relief when it was needed from
the blazing rays of the sun.

The longer that she was with the
children the more she begun to
love them and wished to be closer
if only under the tramping of their
feet, no mind.

Slowly but surely she began to
long for a flight of her lifetime
soaring through the air and to
the ground below, being set
free from the branches of her
family that surrounded her.

Her color blushed with burgundy
as she thought of joining the
others that had gone before her
to nourish future generations
of all kinds.

As the beauty of her skin
begun to wither and her
appearance turned yellow she
embraced the air around her
as she set flight onward and
beyond.

Letting go, the freedom was
more than she could bear and
she just begun to accept her fate
floating and dancing in the wind
only to land near a group of others
that were also her kind.

“Aww, now I am with the
children on the ground” and
the still green blades of grass
greeted her with open arms
and joyous praises of the earth.

This is the end of a short but
meaningful circle of life that
the ones before her and the ones
after her will also have to endure.
Whether or not they will enjoy
the crossing as she is the only
unknown in the life of a leaf.

A simple leaf that goes into
the ground to feed the tree
that created her and the
hierarchy that also allowed
her go so that a future would
be secured and realized.

The beauty of nature
we will never fully understand.
