Virginia Tech Shooting

, , ,

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Local, state and federal investigators scoured a university campus in Virginia for clues to what set off the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history after a gunman shot two people to death in a dormitory Monday morning before making his way to a classroom building where, silently and coolly, he killed 30 more people before turning his weapon on himself, authorities said.

It's a sad thing resulted from several factors. Why he lost his sanity? How can he have the deadly weapon? How can he lurk around the campus for hours without being caught? Why no warnings were issued? ... Things are complicated...

Stomyr Tuesday, April 17, 2007 5:05:59 AM

I've heard it on the news yesterday... That guy must have been a psycho

runner68 Tuesday, April 17, 2007 5:32:33 AM

Very sad thing sad

-demiphonic Tuesday, April 17, 2007 5:38:22 AM

maybe he just had enough & let his rage out on everyone? He does not have to be a 'Psycho' - I guess that could happen to us too worried

but what he did was still wrong despite his circumstances. sad

Dark FurieFurie Tuesday, April 17, 2007 7:45:26 AM

It's usually a student who feels alone, unneeded, unwanted. He wants to make his mark on the world. This is his way of saying look at me, I existed, look what I can accomplish, you shouldn't have ignored me.

Pretty much describes every teenager eh? Apart from the murder suicide thing. irked

-demiphonic Tuesday, April 17, 2007 8:34:41 AM

yeah... you're right worried

宇智波鼬nlzww Tuesday, April 17, 2007 8:34:46 AM

when people feel alone ,unneeded and unwanted ,in other words, he feel that he be abandoned by the social .a student must have enough of supporting points ,he know the means of the life ,if he have a few of supporting points ,he stand in a high place ,he would feel alone .in this circumstances he easily made a extreme action.

Stomyr Tuesday, April 17, 2007 8:38:53 AM

In my opinion, it doesn't matter if the murder was Chinese or American. smile.. (Since I'm not racist. smile )

-demiphonic Tuesday, April 17, 2007 8:39:01 AM

really would it matter what race he was?? confused ...nope. why dwell on that point?

no matter his race... the circumstances that lead him to commit such an act is of real importance.

from his family life to the fact that he could get a gun so easily sad

How awful! I had no power yesterday so I didn't watch the news...until I heard the previews for the 11 o'clock news broadcast...sad Very, very...heartbreaking..and I actually wonder if the shooter was bullied as a child and no one did anything.
My prayers are also with the families.

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Tuesday, April 17, 2007 1:19:58 PM

I have to agree with what my husband said, no matter where you are from it doesn't matter....mental illness is mental illness. I don't think that this young man should be judged by his race, religion or the country that he is from. When someone is suffering from mental illness and stress combined, there is no telling what can happen to the people in this world. There was a screw loose in his head, and who knows WHAT has happened to him in the past...

Was this man being abused? Mistreated? Bullied, as Cheryl mentioned?

OOHHH I hope to God this doesn't become an issue of race. Race is not the factor, the important thing is-lives were lost. Innocent lives-kids going to college to make a better future for their self and their family.

This is happening all over the world. And whether people want to publicly admit it or not, there is still racism strongly in the minds of many. Sad but true.

AzureTimm Tuesday, April 17, 2007 1:28:43 PM

Which is exactly why I'm so sad and worried. Sad for those lives lost, worried for a new wave of hatred... Insane Hatred caused all this... And I pray it'll never, never happen again...

pedro.baez Tuesday, April 17, 2007 1:58:38 PM

As a society we must protect our children from horrific acts like this. Yes I understand that we live in a world were people have mental circumstances, but where is the accountability once you know someone is ill. Is there a plan in place to track individuals that are mentally not sound to live in a social environnment? Or do they release them to society and let the people sort it out? If they do this event will repeat itself, No doubt it will.

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Tuesday, April 17, 2007 2:04:40 PM

Timm, me too. sad I pray too, but unfortunately this is becoming a strange trend. bigeyes
confused

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Tuesday, April 17, 2007 2:11:21 PM

Pedro, All those questions...and so many in charge not willing to answer...sad

AzureTimm Tuesday, April 17, 2007 2:40:19 PM

Trend. That's what I fear most. Some people will catch a breeze and turn in into hurricane. I sincerely hope things like September 11th will NEVER happen again... All lives, in terms of human beings, are lives. Those innocent people shouldn't go like this... Nor do many more innocent people who share same nationality, skin color, religion belief or lack of it, social system, even languages...

Get Mozart's k 626, the Requiem... Music is the international language here... May their souls rest in heaven... Amen.

MarcusFXM256 Tuesday, April 17, 2007 3:07:05 PM

I agree with you Sarah, this person had some serious mental problems and his race had nothing to do with it. There were probably warning signs that were missed by those close to him, as was the case in the Columbine shootings. I pray for the families and friends of all at the school.

JCLjcl-za-75 Tuesday, April 17, 2007 3:07:26 PM

Hi Sarah

We also watched it on CNN last night. It is so bizarre and really sad that these things happen way too often. Imagine killing two people, waiting a few hours and deciding to kill even more people? This guy must have been out of his mind.

What I cannot fathom is the two hour gap between the killing sprees? What were the cops doing in all that time? Is this yet another incident of them biding their time while more people die? (not the first time this would have happened).

JCL.

Dark FurieFurie Tuesday, April 17, 2007 4:31:34 PM

When someone of one race kills others of another race, it always ends up being about race even if it didn't start that way. sad

Dark FurieFurie Tuesday, April 17, 2007 4:40:52 PM

I'm probably gonna get shouted down for this, but I believe we need things like this to truly appreciate the world we live in. You can't have light without darkness after all. Through the suffering of others we see the true beauty of our own lives compared to the horrors they could be.

AzureTimm Tuesday, April 17, 2007 4:52:34 PM

Dear Furie,

Dumas expressed quite a familiar thing to yours in his book The Count Of Mount Cresto. I agree to it to some point- we can't truly appreciate happiness unless we've experienced sadness and hardness. But to the incident itself, I can't agree with you. No matter how angry or insane someone is, or how weapons are freely sold, things like this should never have happened. And according to the report- i'm not sure whether they're right- the murderer hid for two hours after he took two innocent lives. What happened within the two hours? Surely we should not experience sadness in this bloody way?

Dark FurieFurie Tuesday, April 17, 2007 5:32:07 PM

We aren't the ones that suffered. Only the dead and those they left behind truly suffered in this instance. People will be sad worldwide about it, papers will report on it, the town will have a minute's silence every year. Apart from that, life will go on, but most people will have forgotten about this by next month, or they at least wont be able to remember the date without looking it up.

Don't get me wrong, I feel awful for the families of those that've passed. There's no way I'd ever even think this should've happened. But I do believe we need the bad to appreciate the good. Everyone who looks at this and continues to feel sad, everyone that lets this affect their lives negatively, is only adding to the tragedy in my opinion.

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Tuesday, April 17, 2007 5:47:36 PM

No way, we hear about Columbine all the time still here, so I know that we will be hearing about Va Tech for years to come, this has officially gone down in American History. Remember that America is not 'that old' to begin with, so we are making history with each passing year. Compared to Europe, we are just a baby.

Dark FurieFurie Tuesday, April 17, 2007 7:59:15 PM

Maybe it's just us old europeans being cynical then. Here's a question. I know Columbine was the name of a school (I think I know anyway) but I couldn't even tell you the year it happened or how many died. Question is, do you reckon people in other countries (me for example) are less affected by this stuff when it's not on our doorstep?

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Tuesday, April 17, 2007 8:28:39 PM

Yes, it is you being cynical.

Question is...why even ask that? It happened in Virgina so why should you care about it?

Sansanshan Wednesday, April 18, 2007 4:57:05 AM

I heard today that these types of crimes often happen around this time of year, (hence the "trend") and it possibly has something to do with copying the other incidents like Columbine. After a long winter people are more depressed, distraught etc. and then upon hearing about these past crimes, they get the thought in their minds that to have someone notice them they could maybe do something like this.

But you know, a lot of people are sad, depressed , distraught, have been abused, neglected but do they snap and shoot innocent people?

This doesn't happen only in America.

Aniruddhakavishwar Wednesday, April 18, 2007 5:14:10 AM

It is the sad part of the psycho-analysis that innocent people are the sufferer being soft targets. Whether it's war or racial hatred . Just hav a look into the history what happened at the time of w-war II in "GERMANY", at "HIROSHIMA", during "INDO-PAK" split , plane sabotage on "TWIN TOWERS" , and now at "VERGINIA" . I remember one of the blog by 'Wickedlizard' wherein she stated that ' anything happens there is a reason behind it ' what must b the reason ? Is there any solution or not ? Is there any answar ? Or even in 21st century innocent will suffer from individual's whims and wish ? I think there is serious lack of understanding the root cause of the problem. It must be discussed in the philosopher's forum. God bless the souls of the victims with rest in peace. Aniruddha from "iNCREDIBLEINDIA"

thanks for having understanding....

BruceNero0162 Wednesday, April 25, 2007 3:07:29 AM

I don't think we as human beings, will ever really understand the complexity of the brain. A mass of tissue that fires electrical pulses through microscopic conductors, and depending on how we are wired is what makes us who we are, but lets face it, some among us just are'nt wired right whether this is caused by accident, or birth defect,or just natural developement due to enviormental factors. We may never know what causes people to "snap" and commit unspeakable acts,But I honestly believe that every human being has a breaking point. But I also believe that people can hasten that point by reliving their perceived wrongs against them over and over in their minds. It's just a good thing that 99.999999% of us can take wrongs against us and look at it as "oh that's life" and move forward, and not stew over things. So I guess when events like this happen we really should'nt be shocked or suprised.Look at our society and world as a whole there's violence everywhere and I think a large percentage of us are becomming Jaded to it. Columbine suprised me,Virginia Tech not as much. It's a horrible event, and my heart and prayers go out to the families that lost loved ones, but with more and more people on this planet, lets face the odds of people losing it and doing these things increases.Plus no matter what anyone tells me I honestly believe that some individuals are just evil and can't be helped no matter what.I don't know what the answer is, that's best left to the mental health experts, but as long as ther have been human beings on this planet we have committed atrocities against one another, and still do, and will continue to do so in the future.

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, April 25, 2007 10:14:33 AM

But I honestly believe that every human being has a breaking point.

I don't think so....only minds that are sick have a breaking point and without medication..they will easily snap! sad

It has been proved that this young man needed medication before this happened. There were many warnings-but people ignored them, and ignored the man-so tragedy was the end result.

Thanks so much for your input in this post. Thank you. smile

Sarah

BruceNero0162 Wednesday, April 25, 2007 10:48:12 AM

Point taken,But, I still don't believe everything can be "cured" with a pill or theropy. Problem is we will never know with this guy.And sadly he took 30 others with him with his deranged outburst.I just wish,we as human being could learn to love, foregive, respect, and help one another.

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, April 25, 2007 1:18:37 PM

Yes, but brain damage in some prevents them from seeing that way.

Mental illness prevents everyone from being like that as well. I borrowed this link from my brother's blog...but it holds true and fits so well to what we are discussing.
