Back Mishap

, , ,

Yesterday was extraordinarily difficult. My eldest daughter, who has previously had issues with her sciatic nerve in her back, experienced trouble with it yesterday. down
She was on the floor in typical child fashion, stretching and playing like a comfortable cat when suddenly she cries out in pain and sits up quickly. She was having a hard time to even speak as to what was troubling her. I was no less than freaked out to think she could have injured herself another time. sad

You know immediately when a person is truly suffering. I could absolutely see pain seeping through her body and being reflected in her big brown eyes. Slumped against my bed, she couldn’t move and her legs were tucked underneath her in a distorted fashion. So what do I do?

I called my mother.

She advised me to put an ice pack on her back and keep her still. Fearfully I asked my daughter if she could move her toes, fearing the worse. She moved her toes! up Ok, good start…but when she tried to move her legs at all, her face became pale and she looked as though she was going to pass out.

My mother was there in less than 10 minutes, we called the EMT’s to come have a look at her and advise us on what action to take. My youngest was completely worried about her big sister and stayed by us constantly repeating, “I love Rachael, I love her, I love my big sister, I am going with her.” Ok! So that almost caused me to lose it. When a child is expressing fear and concern for another human, I get really emotional! My twins were not so concerned…they was actually in the living room playing the ‘Sims Castaway’. up Good for them to be so relaxed….right I think!

So, the two young EMT guys helped us get her to the car and we spent 3 hours at the hospital emergency room in urgent care. After being examined by a very sweet and spunky female doctor, they gave her a shot of muscle relaxer and pain medication in her upper buttocks area. sad I felt my knees become wobbly as I saw the nurse plunge the needle deep into the muscle. yuck It was pretty weird, I must say. After having 4 kids, you think I would get used to it. No mother ever gets over seeing their child in pain.

It is the morning after and currently she is resting comfortably on the couch under a blanket and watching “Ice Age”. I am here on the love seat typing. (she mentioned that she knew I would blog this experience) lol

My very good friend is going to be induced tomorrow to have her baby… I planned on going to see her today, Sunday, but instead, I will go this week, so that I will be able to see the baby as well. smile Of course I am bringing my camera!

Below is a picture of my daughter with a light on her face that says ‘love’.

Thanks Cheryl, I also will have the same problem as well...haven't in a little over a year, but hopefully not again any time soon! I am taking care of her, so hopefully it won't be long before she can get up and move around again. up

I am sure she will be ok, just keep her back stretched and slowly start working on some flexibility exercises for her legs and lower back. She will be fine.

Sunday she was still down a lot, we are doing the stretches...but maybe not enough! Will work on that more today...
honestly, I am angry at the whole situation...I don't know what is causing it and I am really sad for her....just trying to 'fix it'. *sigh*

sad I know...

Rippripp2002 Monday, January 14, 2008 11:48:50 PM

check her bed or where she lays down the most. Most likely just the way she is sleeping which is causing the whole situation

Rippripp2002 Tuesday, January 15, 2008 3:41:19 PM

LOL :poorcollegeman: confused

I have two twisted vertebra in my lower back from sleeping on a bed that was not level. The very slightest angle of the bed caused the muscles in my right side (lower back, hip and hamstrings) to stay contracted or tight for about 6 months which caused the vertebra to twist slightly. After numerous visits to the chiroquack I do not deal with too much discomfort, so maybe he wasnt a quack afterall. No permenent damage but it causes quite a bit of discomfort and lots of stretching is the only fix, note that is the same area as the "sciatic nerve".

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Tuesday, January 15, 2008 4:17:53 PM

In all honesty, I would love to buy us all new beds. So did you get a brand new bed, and what brand? I am actually looking to buy all the girls new beds so it would be nice to know what direction to go. I have experienced a sciatic nerve problem as well, and it is not fun at all. For about 6 months I suffered until I started doing yoga very seriously. Then I was all better! yey!

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Tuesday, January 15, 2008 4:19:16 PM

Kim, she is home again with me today...still not feeling good. sad I think I am going to have to go pick up her assignments from school. They are required to lug around a heavy laptop all day in replacement of books, so sending her right back to school is not going to help things.

Rippripp2002 Wednesday, January 16, 2008 7:53:27 AM

I didnt get a new bed, at the time I just made it level and did stretches. I am selling my truck because the position of the seat makes my back tight also. sad

I now sleep on a stiffer mattress, but that is something that would be based on the individual person.

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, January 16, 2008 10:51:05 AM

A friend told me about 'sleep comfort' beds. I really wish that I could get one, they are supposed to be the best! http://www.selectcomfort.com/

Thanks smile

Rippripp2002 Wednesday, January 16, 2008 7:20:32 PM

Not sure what I am getting, I havent listed my truck yet. But it will most likely be a smaller SUV type thing with 4 wheel drive.

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, January 16, 2008 7:44:25 PM

Umm, I like those 2 door Bronco things...

Rippripp2002 Thursday, January 17, 2008 12:07:15 AM

jeep cherokee or maybe nissan xterra. I would love a 2 door yukon but they dont make them anymore and well most of the ones I see are completely ragged.

My best friend loves the jeep Cherokee. I think she has had one in almost every color..lol. They are great vehicles ...she always drove the standards.

Rippripp2002 Saturday, January 19, 2008 5:00:58 AM
