everyday life of a stay at home mom/artist

From the Artiste Store....

, ,

I am not trying to be funny or laugh in anyway at this thing I found through a crafting friend on Twitter.

Introducing.....BEAUTIFUL CLOTH SANITARY PADS...?

Click HERE for a link of the item.

I honestly didn't know that cloth pads were in use or bought and sold on the internet. Isn't it such an old fashioned idea? Sort of like cloth diapers? I am open to the idea of buying these, except...GROSS.

I don't have the stomach to even think about the shear amount of washing that would have to be done to clean these. I know it is done around the world, but not for us.right

The way the economy is going...I might HAVE to give in to more recyclable things like this.

Yuck.

Reminds me...of this piece of writing by Gloria Steinem: If men could menstruate...

They'd be good for waxing the car with, I think. Yeah. Not that I ever do that. That's what the drive-thru washy/waxy thing is for. rolleyes

Nasty.

I agree with you Sarah, couldn't imagine having to clean it. yuck.

The last link, what is for 999.00, the Artiste photo?

Ivy writes: I guess it wouldn't be so bad if you could put them in the washing machine, but the amount of water used just to wash these probably wouldn't be worth it in the end.

They are an interesting swirly colour...that's the best thing about them...
I am so thankful to be alive in this day in age where there are disposable diapers, and sanitary products...the thought of being alive in the good ol' days is not even remotely appealing! yuck heart

Mad Scientist (عادل)qlue Saturday, February 7, 2009 3:37:08 PM

I may be wrong, but I think that disposable sanitary pads and related womans products have existed much longer than disposable diapers. left.

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Saturday, February 7, 2009 10:49:29 PM

@qlue, yeah...like I said, it's old fashioned. bigsmile

I wonder about the dye used for the coloring in these cloth sanitary pads. I do not see bathroom tissue with color print patterns anymore, because it came out that the dye caused some nasty infections and had some thinking they had contracted an STD.

As for the washing, soak and wash in cold water with some hydrogen peroxide.

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Tuesday, February 10, 2009 2:05:42 AM

Mmmm hey Bev, I never thought once about the dye, but great point!

KarenNerak Friday, February 13, 2009 6:28:54 AM

Makes me wonder what the tampon version would look like. bigeyes

Then again, nah...I'm no longer wondering. lol

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Friday, February 13, 2009 2:38:21 PM

Hahahahah! Eww!

KarenNerak Friday, February 13, 2009 2:50:58 PM

Exactly! lol

As for mama cloth... I decided I'd rather use a Diva Cup (there's your tampon version for whoever asked lol) but I'm thinking of getting a few pads for light days, spotting, and all. I'm really proud of my cousins daughter actually. 11 years old and she already has said that she wants to use them. Anyways, all besides the point. Point being there are many (many) reasons to go this route. Cost alone would probably do it for me... (we've literally saved thousands of dollars in diapers), but those lovely disposable numbers "we" use are full of chemicals that are not so good up against our skin(or worse inside us). In fact some people are allergic to these chemicals, which as you can imagine is pretty uncomfortable! Babies in cloth have fewer diaper rashes. Environmentally, not sure about mama cloth, but cloth diapers have a huge advantage over disposable... from the amount of energy used to make sposies and all that goes into each component (the part of the equation that was left out when researches showed little difference) to the numbers of non-biodegradable material that is now sitting in our landfills. Now I get that they're different from what you're used to and it's easy to laugh at that or think gross at the inconvience, but still... (and they really aren't as gross as ya'd think lol)

Anonymous,
I am thinking the same thing basically about the energy usage...

BUT there is always going back to good ole' hand washing and hanging things on the line, right? smile Well thanks for the extended comment. smile

Anonymous writes: Even washing in a washing machine there is much less energy used than what's put into making the sposie... but it does have to be factored in of course. Using the line to dry is always best (for one the sun sanitizes extra) but not possible in our apartment lol. I suppose I'd hand wash if I had to, but honestly glad I don't have too... besides the extra water needed (esp factoring in todays water saver models) it may not pay off anyway. And no problem... you hit on one of my points of interest lol. If you want to check it out, I have a blog too (well more than one, but still) at www.nonhippyhippy.blogspot.com

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Thursday, February 19, 2009 2:23:03 PM

Kalila,
Thanks for the link. I love new blogs to visit outside of MyOpera. smile I am lucky enough to have a line in the backyard with a privacy fence to hang things out. I think I MIGHT be a little shy if I didn't have a privacy fence..(undergarments, etc.) But I actually did that years ago and didn't feel embarrassed.

I have a dryer, but like to use the line because of savings on the electric bill! Last summer our electric bill was running as high as our rent! faint I was RELIEVED when fall arrived!

So, unless it's freezing out...I use the line now. And I have 4 girls to wash clothes for!

Wonder what would be a good age to have them do their own things?? p

Unregistered user Friday, February 20, 2009 10:08:11 PM

anonymous writes: LOL no prob... The list of blogs I'm reading keeps growing and growing lol. I can't wait until we have a yard so we can do that too. Partly for the electric savings and partly just because I love the way everything smells when line dried. We did it when I was a kid and I really miss it. I'll prob always have a dryer as backup though lol. Good question though... I don't know about completely taking over, but I'm starting Kalila out young w/ helping (going in steps). Right now she's plays w/ the stuff while I fold.. I seriously plan to have her folding soon though lol. In the next year or two anyway. Now lets see if this will let me put my name on here instead of anonymous lol (nope)

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Saturday, February 21, 2009 3:09:04 PM

Oh jeez, that is your daughter's name! doh yeah, I still haven't let my girls completely take over. But that might be because I am still a stay at home mom (not for long) yey!
