Don't Do This

When I was in Oklahoma City this past weekend I saw a homeless girl with matted red hair standing by the highway with sign in hand. These people are all over Oklahoma City, always with sign in hand.."Will work for food."
The reason I took the picture is because the dog was there with her on a chain. Everything about this angers me....the girl begging for money, the dog chained and not able to run free in a yard. A few feet from the girl was a jug of that premixed tea and a cup. I didn't notice water for the dog.
The puppy reminded me of my own dog. Now...how smart is this homeless girl...to BRING A DOG along to beg. This hits the heart of people. Us, in cars, are now thinking;
"Well this COULD be me standing there with MY dog."
The girl was not thin and she didn't appear to be on drugs.....yet ironically there she stood alone...no man in site and cold wind blowing her hair away from her chubby cheeks and sad eyes.
I snapped the picture quickly (I was passenger in the back seat) and the women in the car behind me gave her money. I have too many feelings about a site like this; anger, confusion, disbelief, sadness and even humored. Such a confusing site. Such a telling story of America.
