I've always wanted to try Safari out. This is the beta version and I saw an article on CNET News where people found some security vulnerabilities in it, so I might wait until those are addressed before I download and give it a try.
There's only one problem with that scenario -- Safari sucks. A lot of Mac users won't run the browser (I'm one of them), so why would anyone run it on Windows?
One word: Konqueror - if you really wanna try a KHTML browser, why not choose the real thing?! Fast, secure, free (browser and OS)... what else do you need...?
Well, maybe Opera! I am and shall remain an Operaholic, with no cure insight so far!
Conqueror is integrated into almost every Linux distributions. I stopped using it when the first stable FF version released. (And atm, I'm a beta tester of FF3 )
Cool Stomyr! That makes us sort of colleagues... I've been testing a mobile browser from Nokia based on Apple's web toolkit adaptation (Safari) and for a mobile browser (it's being shipped with the new Nokia N95 mobile) it's really good, though obviously it still needs a lot of tuning up! Even if for the PC Safari is not going to cut it, on the mobile it's light years ahead any other browser pocket internet explorer included (IMHO)!
Thanks Sarah, and let me say "ditto" about you and your blogs!
The edit was to my comment, I had just finnished adding the last phrase (saying I still use Opera!) when Stomyr added his comment about Opera and FF!
I downloaded the first beta.. but they just fixed some vurnabilities & released a second.. it's not as intuitive as Opera though.. just to get to your homepage takes about 4 steps ..I hope they fix that.
I like Apple so I hope they do well with this Browser & take lots of market share away from IE which will be better for everyone. ...as for the iBench test Apple did.. who knows how accurate that is?
I'm still waiting on an independent study to see if we are indeed the slowest or if it's all lies.
Safari sure does look cool though.. I love the metal & the final version of Safari should be pretty good. We have to wait & see just HOW good & if it will be a real threat to Opera's all ready small market share.
Well at least they mentioned Opera ..most studies only consider Firefox in there works
But the Windows world isn’t like that. It’s a cold, unforgiving place where nothing is sacred, users turn like rabid wolves on any company that makes even the smallest error, and no prisoners are taken. Especially the Windows browser market.
I fully agree. Yeah, I think that Apple is just 'putting it out there' so to say. I don't think it is really a move to win. Maybe this is just another move they are making to keep Apple fresh in the minds of Windows users....I mean...just look at all the folks talking about it. Sort of makes me curious about having a MAC as well...
I have to agree about the media player (as well) it does have the best quality, in my opinion.
The tech pundits say it's a move to get developers familiar with Safari seeing that a version of Safari 3 will be on the iPhone (off course it’s more complicated than that but that's the general idea)
That's the reason they rushed the Beta out (before the iPhone launch). Weather they intend to win the Browser wars or not is irrelevant at this point.
They want Safari 3 "out there" as you say but they ARE very concerned about their image as anyone would be.. after all.. if the average IE user thinks that this rushed beta version of Safari 3 reflects what it's like to be on a Mac, it will work AGAINTS Apple - nor For.
So Apple is Concerned.. but the ties with iPhone is more important & thus the only option was to send out the severely flawed Beta now.
I must admit though.. when the final version of Safari 3 on Windows comes out I'd love to see how it fares against the leader Firefox.
IE may have more market share but that's only cause it's bundled with Windows. Therefore the people who drive Browser innovation forward are those who choose based on technical design & ease of use. So far Firefox is the 'leader' by that criteria. (I call them the “‘Leader’” because more people choose them & not because I can prove that they are better than Opera – I really don’t know.)
The fight is really against Firefox as the article brought out:eek: & to a lesser extent Opera.
Being able to resize the window only on one side of the Browser is really annoying though. I hope Apple changes that on the whole OS X platform.
I like FF because of the real time spell check and I will tell you that is why I use it most if not all of the time. I can't get Opera's spell checker to work for some odd reason! Anyway! I don't care too much, I use Opera for posting and it IS faster to surf on.

Stomry, you have tried Konqueror? Why did you stop using it?

OMG read this.. this is the best article on the Browser yet.
Apple picks a fight it can't win
you gotta wonder though.. do they WANT to win.. after all..this move is more about iPhone that competing with FireFox & others.
