My oldest brother, Abraham, was born today 35 years ago to a young couple madly in love and only having the future in front of them. I am so happy that my parents were deep in love and happy together...
One of my favorite memories of my big brother is when I was in kindergarten (5 years old) and we walked to and from school...my two older brothers and myself... I was carrying papers and crossing the walk in front of the school and of course there were cars coming and going. Suddenly a strong gust of air took the papers and my big brother didn't hesitate to rush us to the side of the street and after my papers he went. I remember standing there wanting to help but he told me to stay, so I did. Hehehe. He picked up all the papers and brought them back to me and walked us home.
He was always a calm and protective brother...
He is 35 today. He has suffered from schizophrenia for 17 years now. Somehow I find this one thing in life that can not be fair somehow....this is one thing that I will never accept as 'part of life' or 'fair'. But ...it is just our life...it is part of us now and we deal with it.
In the picture below, it is one that I found by chance yesterday when I opened my phone book, this is the picture that fell out. I could not believe the sheer luck of it....
Taken when I was probably 3 or 4 and he was 6 or 8..not sure... My mother is at the top of pic and my grandmother Enriquez is at the bottom left...with her always short hair.
She usually kept it that way. My brother is right next to me, as you can see I am sitting on a big book.
The important thing is that we were together in the pic.

Great photo, Sarah! I have a few such of my siblings and me. I cherish them, too.
It's hard watching someone you love suffer from a devastating mental illness, isn't it? Those who love them suffer, too, in ways that most people never know and can never understand.
You're a good sister, I think.

I agree, the treatment of mentally ill patients is sometimes unspeakable and sad...I am at loss for words at the kind of life that they lead. Just blank about it. It is one thing that you can't 'fix' for them to make it better. I know we could probably go on and on about the details, but we know them...no need to drag it all out.

The worst part about mental illness is that so many people do see it as hopeless--both those who are diagnosed with illnesses, and the general public. But it is NOT hopeless.
There are new treatments that are so much more effective. The general public will probably never change their mindset, but those who are diagnosed can learn to take control of their illnesses and their treatments, and find hope and lasting fulfillment in their lives.
It helps more than you can ever imagine to have loved ones show their love and support.
You two are special indeed.
