Hello Sarah,
Henry from Canada here (Cheryl got me going on this whole blog thing last year - it's her fault wink)

The size of Antares is only ONE star of possibly many the same size (it may even be a tiny one compared to those undiscovered). And then the whole universe is even larger than that to contain it all!

Like ya: humans have the answer and terrific insights....

For something fun along this astronomy lesson, install the Planetwerks2 Opera widget. Make shure yer 'pooter and graffics card kin handle it - it's a hawg; but fun to watch on the screen.

"Perhaps you saw what place our universe plays in the scheme of things - as no more than an atom in a blade of grass. Could it be that everything we can perceive, from the microscopic virus to the distant Horsehead Nebula, is contained in one blade of grass that may have existed for only a single season in an alien time-flow? What if that blade should be cut off by a scythe? When it begins to die, would the rot seep into our universe and our own lives, turning everthing yellow and brown and desiccated? Perhaps it's already begun to happen. We say the world has moved on; maybe we really mean that it has begun to dry up.

"Think how small such a concept of things make us, gunslinger! If a God watches over it all, does He actually mete out justice for such a race of gnats? Does His eye see the sparrow fall when the sparrow is less than a speck of hydrogen floating disconnected in the depth of space? And if He does see... what must the nature of such a God be? Where does He live? How is it possible to live beyond infinity?

"Imagine the sand of the Mohaine Desert, which you crossed to find me, and imagine a trillion universes - not worlds by universes - encapsulated in each grain of that desert; and within each universe an infinity of others. We tower over these universes from our pitiful grass vantage point; with one swing of your boot you may knock a billion billion worlds flying off into darkness, a chain never to be completed.

"Size, gunslinger... size.

"Yet suppose further. Suppose that all worlds, all universes, met at a single nexus, a single pylon, a Tower. And within it, a stairway, perhaps rising to the Godhead itself. Would you dare climb to the top, gunslinger? Could it be that somewhere above all of endless reality, there exists a room?...

"You dare not."

And in the gunslinger's mind, those words echoed: You dare not.

- The Man in Black. Stephen King. The Gunslinger

I take the point of view that there is only one existence and it is the way it is because of the laws of physics which control the physical reality and the laws of creation, which are in a large part influenced by intelligent choice.

I hope to see another scale model which shows the distance of the known universe. We have seen how small we are, so, how big is this place we live in?

Universe Measured: We're 156 Billion Light-years Wide!

Ah, "Law of Physics".
So tell me... where does that quark go and why doesn't it give off energy when it leaves? And what are we to do with these law breakers once we find them?
I believe the law of physics is a work in progress. smile
Let us not rule out other, alternate, and parallel universes as quickly as we ruled out the earth being round.

Jonchinajon Sunday, March 9, 2008 3:52:12 AM

The behavior of quarks can only be understood indirectly. We surmise based on what we observe with our particle accelerators.

I am not referring to man's understanding of the laws of physics. I am referring to the laws of physics as they actually are, which cause the quark to behave in ways which go against our current understanding of those laws. If we understood the laws of physics completely and correctly, we would not need to be exploring either the microcosm or the macrocosm.

It is a myth that all people believed that the world was flat. People can believe what ever they want, but we can see the moon and sun. We can see falling drops of water. We can see bubbles. Spheres are a part of the natural world. People have watched boats disappear over the horizon and have climbed to the top of the mountain to see the far horizon.

There may be another reality that is not easily perceived from where we are. But if there is, it is a part of this universe.

Rickcwbywz Sunday, March 9, 2008 6:48:12 PM

How true. We surmise only from what we can see or record.
Maybe the study of these will lead to the understanding of the law of physics.
And if we perceived wrong about them, could we not be wrong an a grander scale?
For now, yes, perception is reality.

Jonchinajon Monday, March 10, 2008 5:29:16 AM

One problem with our understanding today is that there are many scientists who are very creative about what 'might' be true. Astronomers have talked for years about the shape of the universe and have invented several mathematical models which are supposed to help us understand the universe. Some say the universe is open, closed, or flat, for example. Then they use their model to evaluate the data they are getting from all the instruments that astronomers use today.

Some of the theories are interesting and even humorous - even though they are totally wrong. For example, that a beam of light, given enough time would return to the starting point. Yeah right. I don't believe this.

I know there are many instances where common sense will give the wrong answer when trying to understand science. But that does not mean you throw it out to try exotic mathematical tools. There is an underlying beauty to the universe, and it makes sense. It may not make sense to us. But it makes sense to the universe.

Re the post... like uh, back to the size of things...

I saw a photo of a galaxy that had a 'Galactic Jet' shooting out of it. The jet was larger than the whole galaxy!

Incredible.

Thanks for the thought provoking page!
