everyday life of a stay at home mom/artist

Oooo yarn.

, , , , ,

Open sesame!

Usually, when I buy yarn, I leave it as is, and start the project from the middle strand of
yarn. You knitters know what I am talking about. p Well I was starting a project for a friend of mine, and messed up so many times...even unraveling a whole slipper at one point...that I decided to go 'old school' and roll the yarn up into a ball to prevent a future tangled mess.

I remember my mother doing this when I was a child. Sometimes she would even give me skeins of yarn to roll and making it a 'game' for me. I now know that this was a very boring and sometimes irritating chore of knitting.Photobucket

lolI am sooo proud of my 12 year old who knits and crochets as well. Her and I were picking out yarn this weekend for new projects and I think she has better taste in colors than myself!eye She found this gorgeous blue yarn...I just love it and tried to steal it from her. Of course ....she's not havin' it! Photobucket

idea Remember those cupcakes I made? Well my nieces came over and took a couple home with them. They saw them and snatched them up as fast as they could! I am so happy for this because my girls are outgrowing the whole 'play food' phase.cry OH WELL~ the nieces love 'em. Photobucket

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, March 5, 2008 5:49:51 PM

p Thanks bigsmile

Sansanshan Wednesday, March 5, 2008 5:57:43 PM

I too remember my mom unraveling sweaters and me rolling up the yarn. I really enjoyed it, made me feel important. bigsmile

Mad Scientist (عادل)qlue Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:03:18 PM

The whole arty crafty thing seems to have grossly diminished here. I don't know anyone who still knits

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:03:43 PM

S,
I totally agree...I felt sort of in the loop with the grownups. up lol

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:05:49 PM

Aadil,
Umm, well this is something you have to
be into to actually find. There is a whole
knitting and crochet community (beta) called
'Ravelry' www.ravelry.com
This is just a fun hobby...and I am sure there
are women that still do it around you, you
just don't know them personally. Men are part
of Ravelry as well. p

KarenNerak Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:24:58 PM

There are actually men who knit? bigeyes Are they straight?

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:26:35 PM

Karen,
The ones that I have seen....no. lol

KarenNerak Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:27:40 PM

Okay...It all makes perfect sense now! lol

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:29:29 PM

Oh, but they are totally into it. You should hear the pod cast, I listened to about half a second of one...bigeyes Scary stuff bigeyes

Stardancer Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:34:52 PM

I'm gonna have to find some kind of hobby. Tried to teach myself how to crochet, but....lol

Not sure I have the patience--or the fine motor skills--for needlecrafts, darn it.

Pardon the pun.

lol

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:43:44 PM

Star,
Crochet would be a good beginning for anyone wanting
to learn yarn works of any kind. up
You can do it! They sell nifty little beginner packs
at Wal-Mart for less than 10 dollars, go for it.
heart

Stardancer Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:50:06 PM

lol I bought one of those beginner packs and worked and worked and worked at it. I can make a chain. But I can't figure out how to do anything more than that. lol

(I don't follow those drawings very well. And what the heck does "yarn over" mean?!? lol)

Mad Scientist (عادل)qlue Wednesday, March 5, 2008 7:24:35 PM

All the elderly ladies in my family used to knit and/crochet when they were younger. But women in my generation are more likely to know how to lay brickwork or overhaul a cars engine than how to do 'old lady' stuff.
.
It's not that there aren't still a few diehards doing it, It's just that they're all over fifty and many of them have given up on it.
.
It's an expensive hobby. My late mom used to knit in the eighties, she stopped when she realised that the jersey that cost her R100 in wool to knit (not counting time and labour.) only cost R20 to by ready made. Hand knitted items are also a headache to machine wash whereas factory made jerseys wash easily.
.
Some people still do it for a hobby but it costs a lot and you need a lot of time. .
Of course, this is the state of things here in South Africa. So it is not going to be the same everywhere. smile

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Wednesday, March 5, 2008 8:53:11 PM

star!
You gave me a great idea, I am going to give you a video tutorial.

yes

KarenNerak Wednesday, March 5, 2008 9:03:30 PM

Oh! Oh! Oh! I wanna see, too! bigsmile

Stardancer Wednesday, March 5, 2008 11:54:55 PM

Cool! Maybe I can get past that eight-foot chain of yarn I made.

lol

bigsmile

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Thursday, March 6, 2008 2:53:36 AM

Aadil,
That makes complete sense then! faint

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Thursday, March 6, 2008 2:55:03 AM

Ok Karen...you gonna try it? bigsmile

Star,
omg! bigeyes lol!!! ah! a wonderful long chain.
Now, unravel it and roll it into a ball and get
ready to get past the chain phase!

KarenNerak Thursday, March 6, 2008 3:10:39 AM

I don't know if I will try it or not. I'd have to wait and see how complicated it is! wink

Stardancer Thursday, March 6, 2008 3:18:05 AM

Already unraveled. Awaiting further instuctions.

lol

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Thursday, March 6, 2008 3:35:34 AM

Karen,
Oh, it's easy cheesy. bigsmile :sly:

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Thursday, March 6, 2008 3:36:22 AM

Star,
Yey! I feel so teacherish now!

KarenNerak Thursday, March 6, 2008 3:43:24 AM

Mmmmm....I love aerosol cheese! bigsmile

Oh, wait...you mean it's simple. doh

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Thursday, March 6, 2008 3:48:51 AM

lol

YOU like cheese?? bigsmile Do you put it on
those Ritz crackers? Ok, that is just
sinful, is it not?

KarenNerak Thursday, March 6, 2008 6:01:10 AM

I loves me some cheese! A little too much, I think. bigsmile I limit my intake of it because if I allowed myself to eat as much as I wanted, I would look like a big block of cheese in two weeks...easy. rolleyes

And yes! I love it on Ritz! Mmmm...salty, buttery goodness! devil

RamuciukeSaron Thursday, March 6, 2008 8:55:52 AM

Knitting is not only pleasant job, but it is also very healthy for your nerves.
It is very relaxing. Everything you do with your own hands is dear.

Love, Ramute

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Thursday, March 6, 2008 1:17:56 PM

Karen,
I like cheese...I am a real 'salty' person in terms of taste so the
cracker things is directly up my ally. o I also try to stay away
from that stuff, I can just look at it and gain 5 lbs. cry Why
can't I just be naturally thin and eat what I want?? cry
I have actually graduated to eating whole wheat crackers. (if I
eat any at all)

bigsmile

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Thursday, March 6, 2008 1:19:31 PM

Ramute,
Sometimes...but then at times I am like a maniac knitting away
hour after hour after hour until my project is finished or
almost finish. I am like a mad knitter, like an old crazy women
with my needles in hand, hunched over and giggling like a
idiot.
lol

RamuciukeSaron Thursday, March 6, 2008 1:49:08 PM

I can imagine you as maniac knitter!

Love, Ramute bigsmile

Sarah Dreamsangel292005 Thursday, March 6, 2008 2:58:42 PM

Heheheh! Yes, that is me. bigsmile lol
