Thoughts of a 30ish

...is back...

Earlier, I was in the kitchen finishing up the dishes and I glanced down noticing a dark spot on the beige kitchen floor... It was a scorpion. :eyes: BUT I have love for these creatures because I am under the Scorpio Zodiac sign, plus they are sort of cool looking. Picking up the broom and dust pan, I moved in slowly to sweep it up to put it outside. The poor being got all riled up and tried to fight the broom!!
But after I got it into the dust pan, I think the poor thing just died of a heart attack or something because it fell over and didn't fight me anymore. :frown: I set it gently out back in the yard under the bush and waited for it to pop up and walk away...but it just laid there, all curled up and stiff like. :frown:

Ohh well, I tried to save it, and that is all I can do.......

I can't upload pics yet to my still messed up computer but I did a google search and here it is, hahah glad to know it is actually a "texas scorpion"

Striped Bark Scorpion

Scientific name: Centruroides vittatus (Say)
(Scorpiones: Buthidae)

Facts: Scorpions are not insects but arachnids. However, they usually are included in entomology. They are important because of their painful sting. Texas species rarely cause problems when they sting except in very young children or persons hypersensitive to their venom.

The striped bark scorpion occurs throughout the state and is the only scorpion in the eastern half of Texas.

Orrible little creepy crawly. Having a painful sting makes them important, weird .

Hey Cheryl, lol it wasn't a big deal to me, bugs don't bother me much, I bet if you saw something like that you would call for the boys to get it, lol heheheh!!!

Hi Elke, it was almost a baby, so I didn't get scared. I was worried that it didn't survive. :frown: I went out this afternoon to check and see if it was still under the bush and I couldn't find it so I guess it was 'playing' dead.

Hi Fatimah, Yes it is normal. I remember when I was a child and living in my grandmother's house 'out in the country' we would find them all the time and my uncle would take the stinger off with a piece of dental floss. I thought that was really mean. :frown:

 u all,
Sarah

angel292005 23. August 2006, 23:52

Ohh Fatimah, read the above facts about the scorpion ... I took them from a web site when I did a google search for 'scorpions'. Glad I found it because that is the only pic I would have.

Hi Sarah,
I remember seeing scorpions when I was stationed in Texas. When we were out in the field, we had to check our boots in the morning to make sure no scorpions had crawled in them during the night. They are some interesting creatures. I used to leave them alone, and was never bothered by them. It was on its last legs by the time you saw it, but at least you tried to help it.

Speaking of arachnids, I have seen some big spiders here. If I recognize any poisonious spiders in the house, I catch them and put them outside. There are plenty of bugs for them to eat out there, lol. One night, at work, I saw a spider about the size of my hand outside when I was walking around. This spider was big enough to see it breathing :eyes: It had given birth to a bunch of baby spiders, that were crawling all around. It is a non-venomous spider, and I forget what it is called. I watched them for a few minutes then went about my business. That is by far, the biggest spider I have ever seen in my life.

Anyways, thanks for the info on Texan scorpions

Do you know, (it's a fact) we have scorpions up here in cold cold Canada? In the region where I used to live, it's semi-arid desert. The scorpions live under the sand on the beach. They only come out at night when it's cooler. So, if you wanna take your sweety down to the beach at night, you'd better bring a blanket! :D

angel292005 25. August 2006, 17:07

angel292005 26. August 2006, 23:54

devans186 27. August 2006, 14:51

I'll eat that! :D

angel292005 27. August 2006, 15:01

You REALLY would eat it????

devans186 27. August 2006, 15:14

Would and have on many occasions.
In my younger days I was a member of the "Loose Trucking Company", a group of backpaking explorers.
We would explore the Canyonlands area of Soutern Utah. We didn't carry a lot of food, (weight), on a week long foot trip. Therefore, we lived off the land.
We ate things like crawdaddys, lizard, rattlesnake, and scorpion. :D

angel292005 27. August 2006, 15:28

Wow that sounds like a real adventure. but ewwwwww! lol Oh well
