My OperaI Can't Get My Users To Persist

I have got some level of authorisation working - I can force users to log in before they can access the site - but when I do it locally (during development), the users persist.
When I do it globally (deploy application->server) the users do not persist, and I have to create them each time.
Which is - as you can imagine - annoying.
But since I spent a good portion of time trying all this, I am giving up for now, and going back to watching Charmed and writing all about Hermione's first defence lesson with Umbridge for "Into The Black".
