I know why my users won't persist

Apparently the installer lied to me, and when I thought I had installed SQL server, I hadn't.
Then I tried to install it, and it told me it needed SP1 to run.
I tried to install that, and it lead to four solid days of pain and misery, resulting in a full system wipe and restore for my computer.
So, all in all, not a good week for my development plans.
And even after a full wipe and restore, I still can't get SP1 to run, and so I can't install SqlServer, which means I might was well just give up.
I can possibly install it on another computer, however I don't know if it has to be installed on the same machine or not. I wouldn't have thought it would - running the data on a distinct server from the web application is pretty much industry standard - however I am fairly sure it is going to probably not work, because that's the way my life is going at the moment.
